Wellington Haist, Exeter, with
21 members in attendance,
The CEIC broadcast discussed
the whole situation of the Indian
people, The Indians are attached
to the reserve which they con-

sensus was that Indian reserves
have outlived their usefulness.
The Fairfield group discussed
the contribution of the farmer to
Canada's economy. On the whole
Members felt farmers were im-

A request by North Norwich
township council that the depart-
ment of education take action to
upgrade "sub-standard private
schools" has received wide en-
dorsement from county councils
to which a resolution on this
subject was sent. Clerk Robert
Watkins reports 13 endorsements
to date, seven "nay" replies,
one agreement in principle, and
in one instance a county council
referred the resolution—for
some reason not easily under-
stood—to the Dominion govern-
ment.
Huron council's legislative
committee, of which Reeve Ken-
neth Stewart, McKillop, is chair-
man, gave the resolution some
study and did not recommend
concurrence, pending fuller in-
formation.
The facts are that when cen-
tral schools were built in the
townships of North and South
Norwich, five years ago, the
Amish people bought two old
single-room schools, one in each
township. Since the 1961 fall

bough, Ontario. Has worked in
the Motor Equipment Section of
term, classes have been held,
and the schools are operated
independently of departmental
standards. Accordingly, no in-
spector has authority to check
on the situation.
North Norwich council in its
resolution set forth that "pri-
vate schools operated by groups
who do not give an equal oppor-
tunity in education do not supply
adequate school or plant or give
students the type of outlook or
competition with other children
of the community as has been
promoted by the department."
The council proposed that the
department "take the necessary
steps to bring sub-standard pri-
vate schools in this category
up to the standard of public
schools in the same school area
. . . and that the trustees of
private schools comply with these
standards or be compelled to
send their children to the public
schools."
Next fall, North Norwich will
lose 32 public schools to East
