Hawks strong
this year
Although the Junior Hawks came out on the
short end of a 6-5 score against Belmont on Friday
night it appears that the locals are again going to be
one of the powers of the Shamrock Junior 'D'
League. The overtime loss to the Belmont club set
the Hawks' record at 4-2 for the season and was the
best game that they have played so far,
Right now the only thing that is bothering
Hawk coach Earl Wagner is the lack of players as
injuries and other interests are cutting the Hawk
roster. Last year's Shamrock League champions have
only three regular defensemen in Ron Broderick,
Larry Willert and Bill Bourne and the club could be
elevating some players from the Exeter Midget team
to strengthen the bench.
Excluding the two goaltenders the Hawks had
only nine players dressed for the Friday night tilt
with the strong Belmont club and it is hoped that
the team's roster is increased for the next game,
The Hawks have seven holdovers from last
year's squad who are playing up to expectations and
the play of some of the newcomers has also been
encouraging. Bob Moir, Dave Taylor, Otto Smale,
Scott Burton and Bill Bourne have all been evident
in the four Hawk victories and should improve dur-
ing the season.
Bourne and Burton were members of the Exe-
ter Midgets last year while Smale, Moir and Taylor
gained their minor experience in Hensall. Moir has
been the most pleasant surprise for the locals so far
this season as he is at present the third highest scor-
er on the club. The lanky centre who played in goal
for the last two years has eight goals and five as-
sists for 13 points and is three points behind Fred
Lamb who is the leading Hawks' scorer with 12 goals
and four assists.
HAMILTON WINS GREY CUP
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats made our prediction
come true with their 22-16 victory over the Winni-
peg Blue Bombers in the Grey Cup Game last Satur-
day but at times it seemed like the Ti-Cats had some-
thing against us.
The Eastern representatives fumbled the ball
six times and lost possession on five occasions but
their rugged defense threw Winnipeg quarterback
Kenny Ploen for losses 18 times including the three
safety touches which provided Hamilton with their
winning margin.
To our knowledge there were only two local
people attending Saturday's big game in Toronto
but Harold and Mary Holtzman were probably two
of the most excited fans in the crowd of 32,600. Ham-
ilton defensive back, Ted Page, is Mrs. Holtzman's
nephew and although Page picked up a second quar-
ter groin injury in the title game and was limited
to just two second half plays he was an important
cog in the Hamilton machine throughout the season.
Aside from the thrill of seeing their first Grey
Cup Game in person and coming in contact with the
players, the Holtzmans also had a drink out of the
Grey Cup to make it a day they will long remember.
REC LEAGUE GETS STARTED
Last Thursday night marked the beginning of
the Exeter Rec Hockey League and if the first night
is any indication this season should be very interest-
ing. Amid the creaking of old muscles and bones a
total of 19 goals were scored in the first game of the
evening with the Old Timers edging the Bank Boys
10-9 while the Crediton squad clobbered Graham &
Graham 16-3 to establish themselves as one of the
powers of the four-team loop.
The popular Rec League is now in its fourth
season and is even drawing a few interested fans.
There were at least ten sadistic onlookers at the
Thursday night contests who seemed to be enjoying
the high scoring games.
In this week's games the Old Timers will play
Crediton at 8 o'clock while Graham & Graham and
the Bank Boys will tangle in the second game at
9:30.
RUSTLINGS — Winter sports enthusiasts are
asked not to forget the Grand Bend Sports parade
on December 11. The parade will mark the beginning
of the winter sports program at the Pinery and other
skiing and skating areas near the Bend . . . The
`New Look' Rangers are making a big hit with their
followers this year as the rejuvenated NHL club
seems to have new spirit and dash in the early weeks
of the schedule. If the Blueshirts continue to skate
and receive the clutch goaltending of rookie Ed
Giacomin they could oust either the Red Wings or
the Leafs from a playoff position. The Rangers, who
have shown a lot of hustle and determination of late,
are the surprise team of the NHL.

John Willsie's goal at 6:07 of
the first overtime period gave
Belmont a 6-5 win over the Ex-
eter Junior Hawks in a Shamrock
Junior D game that was played
in Exeter on Friday night. Wil-
lsie's winning marker was a bit
on the tainted side as it was fired
from just inside the center red
line and bounced into the Exeter
net but the goal gave the strong
Belmont crew the victory in the
first meeting of the two clubs.
The visitors built up a 3-1
first period lead but the Hawks
who had only nine players dress-

Dowell are leading their respec-
tive draws. Mrs. Payne defeated
Helen Frayne by a 15-2 score on
Tuesday afternoon to lead Ellen
Knight by three points, 36-33.
Mrs. Knight remained in second
place by virtue of her 12-3 win
over Lois Learn. Helen Webber
and Willa Wuerth played to a
7-7 tie and Bernice Cann edged
Dorothy Prout 7-4 in other Tues-
day action.
On Wednesday night Pauline
Simmons outlasted Norma Par-
sons to score a 6-4 win and take
a six point over Edith Boyle

he scored three goals to prove it
as he led the Maple Leafs to a
5-1 victory over the Canadians.
Other scorers for the winners
were Philip Moore, and Randy
Preszcator. The lone goal for
the Canadiens was scored by
Randy Gilfillan.
The second game between the
Black Hawks and Wings was a
closer game all the way with the
Wings coming out on top with a
score of 3-1. Larry Fulton scor-
ed two goals his first of the sea-
son and Pete Glover one for the
winners. Dennis Hutten scored
the only goal for the Black Hawks.
The Blue Wings defeated the
Red Wings 5-3 on the strength of
6 big goals by John Vriese. The
Red Wings goals were scored
by Paul Robinson, Richard Mc-
Laughlin and Doug Fairbairn,

In the Squirt game the Toronto
team again defeated Detroit. This
week the score was much closer
with a score of 2-1. Danny La-
freniere scored both goals for
Toronto and Marty Becker was
the marksman for Detroit.
Last Thursday was the sea-
sons start for the Rec. League.
Games will be played e very
Thursday from 8 to 11 pm and
spectators are always welcome
for free. If the first games are
any indication of the number of
goals to be scored per game a
few of the brighter stars may
ed for the game came back with
three unanswered second period
goals to take a 4-3 lead.
Belmont, who picked up 15 of
the 21 penalties that were handed
out during the rugged contest,
took a 5-4 lead with two quick
goals early in the third period but
Bob Moir's goal at the 9:55
mark tied the score and set the
scene for Willsie's winning
marker.
Both clubs started out cau-
tiously in the overtime frame
with the checking very close but
Willsie took a clearing pass and
defeated Dorothy Marks by a
9-5 score.

Once again the Christmas sea-
son is upon us with shopping trips
and festive activities and it is
having a noticeable effect on the
curling.' Missed games and three
men rinks seem to be the order
for the day.
As of last weekend, Sgt. Skin-
ner was leading the Tuesday
league, chalking up three wins to
one loss. In the Thursday league,
Sgt. Stafford is top rink with
three wins. The mixed league
contest is very close with LAC
Romain and F/L Fiske sharing
top honours with three wins each.
The Monday night challenge
league is just getting under way
with insufficient games to declare
a leader.
The teenagers of Huron Park
had a very successful Bonspiel
on Saturday, competing in four
events. Winners are as follows:
"A" event, Carol Harrington,
defeating Bill Malone.
"B" event, John Farrell, de-
feating John Frankling.
"C" event, Harold Gillespie,
defeating Eric Price.
"D" event, Della Sheard, de-
feating Donna Paxton.

even surpass the great Gordie
Howe in goal production (600).
The game between the Old Tim-
ers and Bank Boys was very close
with the winning goal scored by
Terry Bourne with less than a
minute left in the game. The
final score was 10-9 with four
goals by Bogart, Bourne 3, Blom-
maert 2 and Howe 1 for the Old
Timer s. For the Bank Boys
Moore scored 3, Heywood and
Russell 2 each with singles by
Sanford and Boyle.
The next game was a run-
away for Crediton as they de-
feated Graham & Graham 16-3.
Crediton had a few new faces
in their lineup which should make
them a contending team right
from the start. Top scorers for
Crediton were the Galloway
brothers with 3 goals each, Pfaff,
Lovie and Finkbeiner (Jim) 2
each with single goals by Vin-
cent, Lightfoot, Merner and Fink-
beiner (Eric). The construction
boys had a goal each from Mac-
Donald, Glover and Goder. A new
player for the London team this
year is former Exeter minor
hockey star Jack Stephen.
Port Huron will be the opposi-
tion for the Jr. Hawks here this
Friday at 8:30.

be well attended on Friday nights.

let a low siapshot go from Just

a bounce just before it reached
netminder Rick Stade and caught
the lower right hand corner
to give Belmont the victory.
Fred Lamb was the top scorer
for the locals as he scored hip
11th and 12th goals of the season.
Bill Bourne, Ron Broderick and
Bob Moir each had a goal for the

The Exeter Squirts made it two
wins in a row on Saturday as they
edged Strathroy 3-2 in Lucan to
bring their season record to
2-1-1.
The locals under the direction
of Doug Harrison and Bev Skin-
ner scored a goal in each period
with Perry Stover leading the way
with a pair of markers and an
assist.
John Courtney scored the first
Exeter goal in the first period
and Stover with the help of Van
Tuckey and Geary Penhale gave
the locals a 2-0 lead in the second
frame. The Strathroy club came
back to tie the score with two
quick goals in the final period but
Stover's second goal of the day
with less than two minutes re-
maining in the game gave the
Exeter squad their second vic-
tory in as many games.
