The math purpose of Com- mencement is to honour the out- standing students of the previous year. There are various awards and scholarships presented at Com- mencement. Board awards are presented to the top students in each subject, in each form, with the exception of Grade 13. Acade- mic shields are presented to the top students from Grade 9 to Grade 13. The Student Council award of $100 is presented to the top Grade 13 student who obtained the highest mark in a subject. Class awards are presented to the top student in each grade, with Grade 13 the exception. Student Council pins are pre- sented to specific students for general proficiency and contri- bution to general school activi- ties. Other awards presented are the Paper Staff award of $100, the $100 Staff award, the Beta Sigma Phi award of $50, the Canadian Legion Auxiliary award of $150 and $100. This year SHDHS had three $400 Ontario Scholarship win- ners. These former students are Robert Bennett, Ella Mae Schlen- ker and Judy Finkbeiner. Fed- eral-Provincial bursaries of $500 will be presented to Jim Carscadden, Guido Coolm an, Shirley Sander and Robert Ben- nett. Other scholarships and bur- saries awarded are the university of Western Ontario scholarship, the University of Waterloo tuition scholarship, the Leonard Found- ation scholarship, the Atkinson Charitable Foundation bursaries and Christ the King College bur- sary. Speaking on behalf of the stu- dents presently attending SHDHS may I offer my sincere congratu- lations to the students involved with awards, scholarships and bursaries. I hope all of you are as successful in the years to come. The guest speaker will be Dr. E. G. Pleva, the chairman of the Department of Geography of the University of Western Ontario. I know Dr. Pleva will be very interesting and I urge everyone who can to attend Commence- ment. A dance and reception will follow the program for the grad- uates and their parents, mem- bers of the staff, and any Grade 11 or 12 student who wishes to attend. Johnny Down's Orches- tra will provide the music. I hope that the above explanation of Commencement will interest you, the public, and that many people will attend, in an effort to make this, the best Commence- ment ever! Many people have been inquir- ing about whether or not SHDHS will sponsor a magazine cam- paign this year. Mrs. Howard Pym pro- posed a toast to the CGIT mem- bers and Miss Dianne Stone gra- ciously replied. Following the meal a short program was enjoyed.
