PLASTIC FREEZER CONTAINERS By JOHN PRYDE The South Huron Panther s marked the opening of the 1965 Huron-Perth football conference with a rather inauspicious debut in Listowel last Wednesday as they fought the hard nosed Listo- wel crew to a 13-13 draw. Two one play lapses spelled disaster for the high-spirited Panthers who came charging back to tie the game twice. The South Huron junior squad opened on a more pleasant note. They collected a 12-8 win. The inexperienced team, with only half a dozen returnees showed well in their first game. The Panthers, after receiving the kick off, could muster little attack and were forced into a punting situation on their own 47. John Franklin's kick was blocked and Listowel took over on the Panther 50. However the Panther defense halted the attack quickly with Danny Cameron picking off a Listowel aerial. The Panthers regained posses- sion at mid-field and Dick Colter picked up 20 yards and a first down. On the next series a fum- ble and a Listowel recovery halt- ed the drive on the homesters' 27. Again the stubborn Panther de- fense held and after the punt the Panthers had possession on the Listowel 46. Ron Loungash and John Frank- lin gained one first down before Franklin scampered 26 big yards to the Listowel 9. Again a fum- ble thwarted the attack. Listowel was forced to kick and South Huron had the ball on the Listowel 27. A field goal attempt by Dick Colter was blocked and Listowel again took over on their own 36. Bryan Barfoot then galloped 74 yards out of the Listowel back- field for a touchdown. Bender's convert attempt was wide but Lis- towel had a 6-0 lead. The Panthers started again at their own 28. A pass from quar- terback Paul Mason to John Franklin netted 8 yards. Mason then picked up another 5 and a first down. Two passes went astray and the Panthers had to kick. Listowel too had to kick and the Panthers were back on their own 14. Ron Crown gained 5 yards and then speedy John Franklin scampered 91 yards around right end to tie the score at 6-6 as Colter's convert was blocked. The teams exchanged punts be- fore Listowel picked up a first down to end the first half. Listowel could go nowhere aft- er receiving the kick-off and South Huron took over at the Lis- towel 54. John Franklin made 5 yards and Scott Burton, replacing the injured Mason gained another 7 and picked up a first down. Then the Listowel defense tight- ened up and forced the Panthers to kick. Listowel took over at their own 50 but a 15 yard pass brought the ball to the South Huron 45 yard line. The Panthers held and regained possession on their own 47. Burton picked up one first down and Franklin made another 8 before a pass inter- ception left Listowel in posses- sion on their own 54. The Listowel quarterback was thrown for a loss of 8 yards by Dick Colter forcing them to kick. However the kick was fumbled and Listowel recov- ered at the Panther 38. Apenalty took them to the Panther 15. An attempted field goal went wide and Keith Strang ran it back to the third yard line. Franklin made 6 before the Panthers kicked. Again Listowel took charge at the Pan- ther 38. The quarterback was thrown for a loss of 5 yards and on the next play Bob Beavers made the loss 10 yards. Listowel kicked and Panthers had the ball on their own 30. A Burton pass was intercepted by John Moore, who raced untouched 30 yards for the touchdown. Bender's convert was good and Listowel led 13-6. By MRS. NORMAN LONG 4-H CLUB MEETING Kippen 4-H Club No. 2 held its first meeting Monday at the home of Mrs. Garry Triebner. Mr. Charles Taylor of Stoney Creek spent Sunday afternoon with Mr. & Mrs. Norman Long. After receiving the kick off the Panthers put the ball into play on their own 33. Burton made 1 yard on the first play. He then filled the air with footballs hit- ting Ron Crown on consecutive passes of 41 and 36 yard leav- ing the ball at the Listowel 1. Burton dove over for the TD on the last play of the game. Dick Colter's pass for the convert was incomplete but Listowel was offside and South Huron had an- other chance. This time Colter made no mistake as he booted the convert for the tying point. JUNIOR GAME In the junior encounter the locals struck early as Bill Tay- lor and Jim Hayter made runs of 15 and 20 yards. Hayter made 4 yards and Taylor picked up another first down with an 8 yard gain. Hayter gained 7 more to leave the ball at the Listowel 1. Hayter then went over for the TD but his convert attempt was b lo c k e d. Listowel got on the scoreboard when Sanders kicked a long single near the end of the first half. South Huron's other touchdown came from Bill Taylor as he galloped 50 yards off tackle. Jim Hayter's convert again was wide. In the dying seconds of the game quarterback Sanders hit Coughlin with a TD pass. Harrison made the convert good leaving the final score 12-8 for South Huron. the summer home of Mr. & Mrs, Howard Morley, Orand /300, ,on. the occasion of the golden wed- ding pf Mrs. Roy Neil of Vista, California, Ready .Mix CONCRETE Plant 235-0833 Residence 220,6961 C.A.McDOWELL Ltd.
