FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Jim Russell
Ready for
winter
Now that the Exeter Fair is over for another
year Arena Manager Alvin Willert and his new as-
sistant will be preparing the rink for the upcoming
skating and hockey season. Willert expects to have
an adequate sheet of ice by November 3 and is now
replacing boards where needed around the ice sur-
face and also replacing screening.
The arena gymnasium is being used already
with the square dancers occupying it on Monday and
Wednesday evenings and the Exeter Teen Town tak-
ing over on Fridays. Members of the RAP Commit-
tee have discussed installing a heater in the gym for
use in the cold months and this proposal could be
passed at the next meeting on October 12.
Before the ice is put in, the arena could be
used for roller skating but events such as the Kins-
men Club's Harvest Jamboree and Car Show will cut
down the number of roller skating dates.
The Exeter Junior Hawks who were Sham-
rock League champs last year will be a definite
starter in the league this year while it doesn't ap-
pear that there will be an intermediate club in town
again this season. The Rec Hockey League will prob-
ably operate again this winter with minor hockey,
figure skating and public skating keeping the rink
occupied for the winter months.
LEGION AND CREDITON IN FINALS
The Exeter Legion and Crediton are currently
embroiled in the Exeter Men's Rec Softball League
final and regardless of the outcome both squads
deserve a pat on the back for their fine play in the
final showdown. As this is written the Legion holds
a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series and could wind
it up with a victory tonight (Monday) but if the pitch-
ing of both clubs continues to be as tight as in pre-
vious games the series could go the limit.
The Legion took the first game of the series
by a decisive 8-1 score when Crediton fell apart in
one inning and allowed six runs but Crediton re-
bounded for a 6-3 win in the second game when
pitcher Gord Slaght pitched seven fine innings and
contributed a two-run homer. The veterans came
back, however, last week when Don Mousseau sur-
rendered two safeties to lead the Legion to a 1-0 win
and take the series lead. Slaght also came up with a
good pitching performance but was charged with the
loss when Dick Bennett stroked a first inning triple
and came in to score when the throw from the out-
field hopped over the thirdbaseman's glove and into
the stands.
Slaght and Mousseau have been the pitching
stalwarts with Slaght allowing six hits and four runs
in 13 innings and Mousseau giving up seven runs
and 14 hits in the 18 innings he has pitched. Mous-
seau has fanned 19 Crediton batters and walked two
in the series while Slaght has struck out 19 and has
yet to walk a man.
Crediton veteran Al Flynn leads all the hit-
ters in the final set with a single, two doubles and a
triple in 10 official trips to the plate while catcher
Mel Finkbeiner has had a triple and a single and
pitcher Slaght a double and a home run in the three
games.
Outfielder Chub Edwards leads the Legion
batters with three singles in nine attempts while
handyman Dick Bennett has contributed a pair of
key triples.
RUSTLINGS — The schedule for the Sham-
rock Junior League will be drawn up in Port Huron
this Sunday while the first Exeter Junior Hawks
game will be on November 12 . . . Six more local
bowlers joined the select 300 Club last week with
Bob Nicol of the Itchy Six leading the way. Compet-
ing in the Men's Intertown League on Saturday Nicol
bowled a sparkling 373 to lead the Itchy Six to a
9-3 win over Seaforth. Jack Fuller of the Rockets
had a 314 last Monday night and also set this year's
high triple for the Men's League at 869. Other 300
bowlers include Eric Matzold 346, Don Couture 314
and Pete Bileski and Peg Hunter-Duvar who bowled
363 and 306 in the Sunday night Mixed League.
Guess who this is
Jim Russell, T-A sports columnist, was one of the many entries in
the fall fair parade, dressed in his usual attire for baseball games.
The pencils in his hand probably indicate agrowing blindness, sonle,-
thing some of his team mates have hinted at from time to time during
the season. (T-A photo)
Crediton came up with a two
run fifth inning on Monday night
and then held on to defeat the
Exeter Legion 3-1 to tie their
best of five Exeter Men's Rec
League softball final at two games
each. Crediton's victory extended
the series to the fifth and final
game which was played last night
(Wednesday) under the lights at
centralia..
Errors played a large part in
the fourth game that was played
in 45 degree weather. All four
runs in the contest were unearned
with eight fielding errors
throughout the game.
The Exeter squad opened the
scoring with a single run in the
third frame when Jim Hennessey
was walked leading off the inning.
Pitcher Don Mousseau fanned for
the first out of the inning but
Jerry Finnen sacrificed Hennes-
The Legion took a 2-1 series
lead last Wednesday night when
Don Mousseau tossed a neat two
hitter to defeat Crediton in a 1-0
thriller. Gord Slaght who worked
on the mound for the losers also
gave up two hits in the seven
inning contest but gave up a
single run in the first which was
all Mousseau needed.
Slaght retired the first two
Legion batters in the last of
the first but thirdbaseman Dick
Bennett stepped into a pitch and
drove it into left center for a
triple and then came home when
the throw from the outfield took
a wierd bounce into the stands.
After the first frame the Credi-
ton ace retired the Legion in
order in the next five innings
while his mates threatened to
score only twice against Mous-

sey to second and he came home
to score when Chub Edwards
ground ball was booted.
The Legion lead was short
lived, however, as the winners
knotted the count on back to
back singles by Dick Coulter
and Al Flynn, an error and a
single off the bat of catcher
Mel Finkbeiner who knocked in
two Crediton tallies in the game.
Crediton hurler Gord Slaght
pitched effective ball after the
third frame while his mates came
up with a pair of runs in the
fifth to take the lead. Al Flynn
reached first base on an error
to start the rally and Slaght
doubled to left to put runners
on second and third with none
out. Mel Finkbeiner picked up
his second rbi of the game when
he grounded deep to second to
score Flynn from third and then
Bob Hodgins singled to drive in
seau who struck out six and
didn't walk a batter. With one out
in the first Al Flynn tripled but
Mousseau left him stranded as
he forced Slaght to pop out to
third and Mel Finkbeiner to
ground out. Crediton came up
with their biggest threat in the
top of the seventh when Slaght
led off with a booming double
over third base. A diving catch
of a foul pop by first sacker
Jim Hennessey retired the first
Crediton batter while Mousseau
fanned Bob Hodgins and forced
Russ Beaver to ground out to
second to end the game.
Slaght and Al Flynn collected
the two Crediton hits with Slaght
hitting a double and Flynn a triple
while Dick Bennett tripled for the
Legion and Jim Hennessey picked
up a third inning single,
in their best of three WOAA
Intermediate se r ie s. Southpaw
McDowell scattered six Exeter
safeties over the nine inning con-
test and struck out 15.
Second', game of the series will
be played in Hensall on Thursday
at 8:30 with the third game, if
necessary, scheduled for Brus-
sels on Saturday night.
The winners took a 2-0 lead in
the bottom of the first frame
in the Tuesday encounter as lead-
off man Gord Proctor stroked a
double, moved to third on a ground
out and scored on McDowell's
single into left field. Bill Higgins
who reached first on an error
also scored on McDowell's safety
to give Belgrave the lead which
they never lost.
The Lanes cut the deficit to
2-1 in the third when veteran
Red Loader hit a leadoff home-
run over the centerfielder's head
but McDowell settled down to re-
tire the next three batters in
order to get out of the inning
without further damage.
The Belgrave hurler was very
effective after the third frame
and held the locals off the score-
sheet as his mates scored twice
more in the fourth, added a single
run in the fifth and then closed
out their scoring with three more
in the seventh frame.
Although they threatened a
couple of times the locals didn't
get another run until Jim Russell
led off the ninth inning with a long
homerun into left field to cross
the plate with Exeter's second
run.
The Exeter squad left runners
stranded several times through-
out the fast moving contest as the
three week layoff seemed to affect
their hitting. Cy Blommaert led
off the fourth inning with a double
and was left at second as the
next three batters went down in
order while Red Loader doubled
with one out in the fifth and also
was left on base.
Leadoff man Gord Proctor and
McDowell led the winners at the
plate with two hits each while
Red Loader was the hitting star
for Exeter as he belted a homer,
double and single in four trips
to the plate. Cy Blommaert hada
double and a single for the locals
while Jim Russell's homerun was
the only other hit off McDowell.
the third Crediton run.
Winning pitcher Gord Slaght
picked up his second win of the
series by fanning five and giving
up four Legion safeties. Slaght
has lost one game and was in
serious trouble only twice in
Mondays game. The husky right-
hander gave up consecutive hits
to Murray Brintnell and Dick
Bennett in the first inning but
Brintnell was thrown out at the
plate on a close play to end the
threat. Slaght was in trouble again
in the fourth when the Legion put
runners on first and second with
one out but failed to score.
Don Mousseau took the loss
for the Legion. Mousseau allowed
eight Crediton hits and struck out
five while walking four.
Dick Coulter, Slaght and Al
Flynn each had a pair of safeties
for the winners while Mel Fink-
beiner and Bob Hodgins contri-
buted singles. Coulter rapped out
a triple and a single and Slaght
a double and a single while Flynn
had a pair of singles to bring his
series hit total to six.
Right fielder Chan Livingstone
led the Legion batters with apair
of singles while Murray Brintnell
belted a double and Dick Bennett
added a single to round out the
Legion hitters.

He turned in a time of 2:04-
3-5 and returned $4.50, while
picking up $1,677 as his share
of the purse.
