I would not ask that power, wealth or fame Be cast by life before his feet; But that he hold unsullied his fair name When tasting of the bitter or the Sweet; That he will always walk with eyes alert, With ears atune to Beauty's every sight and sound; That kindness will possess his heart, And joy and laughter in his soul abound. Burrows — Continued from page 14 information on ((How is Johnny, doing?" but an opportunity to hear and meet the person who will be responsible for your child's education. I mentioned the personal inter- view above, and this "open even- ing" might prove to be the oc- casion to arrange for an interview in the weeks to follow. I would urge you NOT to put this off! It is surprising how quickly the beginning of the school year be- comes the end of the school year, and that initial interview has never taken place! Periodically after the first chat with the teacher the parents should check with the school, if no word is forthcoming from that direction, to see that all is well. I have urged our teachers time and time again to keep the parents well informed. particu- larly so when they find a pupil is having difficulty with the work. I believe this is their respon- sibility initially, but parents can help ease the situation by keep- ing in touch. When your child brings a term report card home do not simply sign it and return it without first reading it over carefully. If you want an explanation of a mark or comment don't ask your boy or girl, ask the teacher! I did say ask for not demand an explana- tion! Don't feel an injustice has been done if the results of examina- tions are not as high as they have been in the past. In many subjects it is highly unlikely that any two people will assess apiece of work in exactly the same way. Much of the testing in the ele- mentary schools is subjective, and, because of this and the change in classroom environ- ment, your child may be graded quite differently without any act- ual change in his ability to pro- gress and to learn. Whatever you do we urge you to send your children off to school with positive thoughts to- ward education. The professional people who will meet your child- ren in the classroom are vitally interested in helping each boy or girl achieve all that is possible within the range of his or her potential.
