Even though I am very busy preparing for the opening of school on September the seventh and supervising the construction of four portable classrooms and the plans for the large vocational and aca- demic addition to South Huron District High School I am appreciative to the Times-Advocate for their consideration and the provision of this space in the Back-to-School addition of their paper. This is the first public opportunity that I have had to express some of the plans and hopes for the next two years. Also, it is the first chance to thank the few people that I have met in South Huron for their friendliness; for their concern for good education; and for their good desire to provide physical accommodations to prepare our youth for the lifetime that they have before them. This is par-, ticularly true of the present Huron South District High School Board, I fervently hope that the municipal and county councils will continue to appoint strong, progressive community leaders to the Board in the years to come as the complexity of secondary education increases to meet the needs of our rapidly advancing technological age. It seems ages ago that I interrupted classes and had the whole school listen for nearly two hours to the radio description of the first American astronaut into space. As I write this column it has been over twelve hours since I have heard anything about Astronauts Cooper and Conrad. Like many other changes in our way of life we are taking space travel for granted. Our educational philosophy and techniques are changing rapidly to meet the new situations and prob- lems that face us. One of the greatest tasks a secondary school teacher faces today is the problem of keeping up-to-date in his own narrow field of study and not to become nonchalant or depressed When he knows that he is lagging behind. The great mass of knowledge and “know-how" that has come upon the scene in the 1960/s can be confounding unless time to study and analyse is given to each subject area. No longer can a teacher be a "jack of all trades". No longer can a secondary school student be expected to master knowledge in all fields when greater knowledge in a few fields is so essential to his livelihood. In next week's newspaper there will be an advertisement of the instructions needed for the smooth opening of school on September the seventh and the first week. Therefore, I will not take space now to include it in this article. This past year different light courses were offered and taught over the five grades. These could be divided into three areas, the five-year program of the Arts and Science Branch and the four-year program of the Arts and Science Branch and the one year Special Commercial course. This year there will be a considerable change with fourteen different courses being taught over the five grades. The new courses are the four-year program of the Arts and Science Branch in grades nine and twelve, the four-year program of the Business and Commerce Branch in grades nine and ten, the four- year program of the Science, Technology and Trades Branch in grade nine and grade ten of the 5-year program of the Business and com- merce Branch. These are new names to many people and I hope that we can explain these programs and branches better in the next two years. Guidance services need to be expanded to help explain these — Please turn to page 15 TO DRAMATIZE What variety there is in Exeter stores, The Tithes4-Advbcate prepared thiS array (and a Shopping list next page) of !terns available right now in Exeter stores for Back to School.
