How to prevent cash
going out the window
For centuries, windows
were nothing more than mere
holes in the wall. They had
to be small because they
were leaky, handmade af-
fairs.
Suddenly came design and
manufacturing advances.
Windows started to grow.
Today, both traditional and
contemporary homes have
big window areas—often
whole walls made up of win-
dows. This great increase
in size has made windows
even more important.
Of the most important
parts of a home, only win-
dows must operate day after
day, year after year. Win-
dows are essential to a sound
structure and to the beauty
and livability of a new home.
When you know the facts
of why good windows are
important, you realize why
it's to your advantage to
make sure you have only the
best windows in your home.
There are just two places
where the dollars you invest
in a house will pay you back
year after year. One is in-
sulation. The other is win-
dows. That's because both
work constantly to cut your
heating and air conditioning
bills.
Heat losses around leaky
windows can run as high as
25% of your heating bill. In
a home where the bill runs
$200 a year, $50 of this may
be literally "going out the
window".
If the sash and frames
happen to be aluminum
rather than wood, there
would be an additional heat
loss which heating engineers
average at slightly over 20%
—an extra $40 per year in
our example. That's because
aluminum conducts heat or
cold a full 1,800 times as
fast as wood.
One big measure of a win-
dow's efficiency is the
amount of air that seeps in
around the sash. If we sub-
ject a window to a 25-mile-
per-hour wind, it should not
admit more than 42 cubic
feet of air per foot of crack,
in an hour's time. Those
are minimum commercial
standards established by
government procedures.
But Dashwood Planing
Mills Ltd. produces their
windows to greatly exceed
these standards. Their win-
dows are more than six times
as efficient and "tight" as
commercial standards. This
exceptional tightness is typi-
cal of Dashwood Windows.
In the house mentioned
earlier, the annual heat loss
would be cut from $50 to
about $8.50 with weathertight
Dashwood Windows. Add
Dashwood's natural insula-
tion of wood sash and frame
and you get extra savings.
Such savings would soon
make up the slight premium
you pay for better windows.
Thereafter these windows
would actually be EARNING
money for you. This holds
true for all types of heating
systems.
CUT COSTS
Air conditioning engineers
say that good windows, pro-
perly installed, are second
only to adequate roof insula-
tion in reducing the cost of
home air conditioning.
And, all the money you
spend insulating your walls
can't give you the comfort
you want if your windows
leak drafts and cold. Good
windows make the difference
between living in a comfor-
table home and what may
seem like a drafty barn.
They keep out dirt, dust
and soot. Make your home
easier to keep clean. And
a draft-free, clean home is
a healthier home. A home
much more pleasant in which
to live.
Windows also play a big
part in determining your
home's appearance—inside
and out. And that's an impor-
tant part in helping you sell
any home. The finest, most
beautiful wood windows add
less than 1% to the total
cost of your home. Yet re-
cords show they can repay
you many times over in
terms of increased resale
value alone.
Good wood windows also
make living more enjoyable,
although you can't put a price
tag on pleasure. It's just
too precious! Good windows
will contribute beauty and
comfort to your life.
By the same token, poor
windows can be most irritat-
ing. They'll bind and warp.
They'll rattle and leak.
You'll fume as you try to
pry them open. And fret
when they stick in a sudden
squall. And what a headache
cleaning up the dust and soot
that filters into your house.
Unless you can afford to
replace poor quality windows
after you've grown tired of
them in a few years, you'll
be money ahead to buy ade-
quate, top-quality windows
right from the start.
