...Some scenes from the plants
The break-out department at
Dashwood includes one main
lineal rip saw and four
crosscut saws, shown in op-
eration at the right. The
operators cut the lumber
into various lengths of use-
able components and main-
tain a rough cut inventory of
over 200 sizes of material.
Lumber when received at
the plant is medium grade
and contains a certain num-
ber of defects and knots,
but the skilled men in the
break-out department saw
all the lumber to eliminate
any defects and pieces leav-
ing this department are 100%
clear product—or pert e c t
lumber.
Some of the most fascinating
machines in the manufacture
of wood windows are the high
speed, precision molders as
shown on the left. These
machines cut grooves, dips,
dives, shapes, bevels, etc.
into the wood to fit the many
patterns and designs of the
Dashwood Wood Windows.
The seven molding machines
in the plant average 280
lineal feet per minute. To
insure the maintenance of
exact tolerances, Dashwood
Planing Mills Ltd. have a
complete machine mainten-
ance room where the tools
are ground and kept in ideal
working condition.
Similar to most industries,
Dashwood Planing Mills
Ltd. plants are highly mech-
anized and automated. Photo
at the left shows an employee
moving a large pile of lum-
ber by means of a push-
button crane that takes the
lumber from the large stor-
age area and moves it into
the plant for the start of the
long process that eventually
transforms it into wood win-
dows. Motorized conveyors
move the material to various
departments throughout the
plant.
