40's.
Lloyd Greenacre, Burton and
Hinton won prizes for low

ors with a 50.

Distaff bowlers
show their stuff
In the lawn bowling results
this week it appears that the
ladies are rounding into mid
season form and are now chal-
lenging the men for first place
honors.
The Exeter Lawn Bowling
Club staged a jitney at the local
green Saturday night with Betty
Barkley and Verne Smith tying
for first place with two wins and
a plus of 11.
The battle for second place
was also very close with Lila
Smith edging out Mrs. Glen by
her higher aggregate score.
Mrs. Smith had two wins, a
plus of six and an aggregate
of 23 while Mrs. Glen had two
wins, a plus of six but an
aggregate score of only 22.
Staffa splits
H-P openers
The Staffa Merchants defeat-
ed zurich Lumberkings 4-0 in
the Huron-Perth League opener
at Zurich Wednesday but lost to
Walkerton by a 4-1 score on
Sunday to even their record
at one win and one loss.
Jim Cassidy and Al Steinhoff
teamed up to limit the Sta.ffa
crew to only one run in the
nine inning contest on Sunday
while their teammates scored
four times throughout the game
for their first victory of the
season.
In the Wednesday game at
Zurich, Staffa pitcher George
Coveney staged a spectacular
performance by allowing the
Lumber kings only two hits
while striking out 12 batters.
The blond righthander also aid-
ed his own cause by belting a
long homerun over the right-
field fence in the fifth inning.
Zurich pitcher Jim Pfaff went
all the way for the losers and
struck out seven Staffa batters
in the six inning contest. The
Zurich squad committed four
miscues.
Dick Bedard picked up the
first Zurich hit in the fourth
inning and Jim Bedard singled
in the last of the sixth for the
only hits off Coveney.
Thirdbaseman Ken Warren
paced the Merchants attack with
a double and a single and scored
three Stale runs. Bill Murphy
with two singles, Coveney with
a homerun and Gary Hopf and
Bob Parkinson with a single
each rounded out the Staffa
hitters.
In Huron-Perth action next
week Zurich will play in Dash-
wood tonight (Thursday) while
Staffa will travel to Zurich for
a game next Monday night.
Walkerton will meet Dashwood
in Dashwood next Wednesday
night.
Zurich: Bob Johnston, Rick
Stade, Don O'Brien, Phil Over-
holt, Dick Bedard, George Hag-
gitt, Earl Wagner, Angus Mc-
Intosh, Doug O'Brien, Jim Be-
dard and Jim Pfaff.
Staffa; Ken Warren, Bill Mur-
phy, Frank Elliott, Link Roh-
fritch, George Coveney, Bill

ler, Allan Clemo and Bob Park-
inson.

Three straight singles off
the bats of Marilyn Marshall,
Pat Down and Darlene Snell
netted the Greys another two
runs in the fourth frame and
they then closed out the scor-
ing with one run in the bottom
half of the fifth inning.
Gayle Marcel led the Hensall
batting attack by banging out
a triple and two singles while
June Chuter collected two sin-
gles. Dolly Mattson and Elea-
nor Shelds added a single each
to the Hensall cause.
Hensall: Linda Fuss, June
Chuter, Dolly Mattson, Linda
Fteagen, Gayle Marcel, Muriel
Ferguson, Eleanor S he 11 d s,
Mary Lou Hyde and Arlene
Chipchase.
Exeter: Darlene Snell, Con-
nie Kernick, Ann Baynham,
Fern Dougall, Audrey Pooley,
Judy Smith, Ann Cronyn, Lee
Souchereau, Iris Marshall,
Anne Jorgensen, Marilyn Mar-
shall and Pat Down.
Following is the complete
Ladies League schedule. The
Greys play a total of 13 regular
season games and will play a
double schedule against Bruce-
field and Hensall and a single
schedule against Go der i
Brussels and Winthrop.
All home games of the Exeter
Greys will be played on Tuesday
nights starting at seven o'clock.

in the opening game of the
season.
The home club scored once
in both the first and third inn-
ings, added two markers in the
fourth and then concluded their
scoring with one run in the fifth
while the Hensall club plated
all of their runs in the fifth
frame.
Pat Down went all the way on
the mound for the locals and
gave up a total of seven hits
while striking out two batters
and walking two. Down walked
both Eleanor Shields and Mary
Lou Hyde in the fifth Inning
and these were the only two
Hensall runners to score.
The locals scored a run in
the first on Ann Baynham's
single and Fern Dougall's dou-
ble and added another tally in
the third when Darlene Snell
walked and came in to score
on successive singles by Bayn-
The Exeter Greys, who last year were
league champions in the Ladies' Huron Softball
League, began their regular schedule this week
and once again it appears that the club will be
one of the top contenders in the popular loop.
The Greys are coached by Lloyd Cushman and
Bob Pooley again this year and will undoubtedly
give local softball fans a lot of exciting ball this
season.
The local squad, which opened the season
against the new entry from Hensall on Tuesday
night, will journey to Brucefield on Friday night
to face the powerful Brucefield team that ousted
them from the Ladies' League playoffs last year.
Other teams in the six-team league include Gode-
rich, Winthrop and Brussels. The league was to
have seven teams but the Mitchell club was
forced to fold.
Due to the fact that Hensall has entered
a team this year the local club will lose a couple
of key players in outfielder Dolly Matson and
pitcher Helen Ebel but the club management is
hopeful that some of the newcomers can take
over.
Returnees from last year's squad include
Audrey Pooley, Jean Taylor (soon to be replaced
by Jean Weber), Ann Cronyn, Fern Dougall, Pat
Down, Iris Marshall, Lee Souchereau and Dar-
lene Snell while Ann Jorgensen will be returning
after a one-year absence. There have been a lot
of youngsters working out with the club in the
past few weeks and a few of them may be able
to make the starting lineup later on in the sea-
son.
The Greys are set in the catching depart-
ment with two experienced backstops in Fern
Dougall and Ann Jorgensen but with the loss of
Helen Ebel the pitching staff is thin with only
Pat Down and Audrey Pooley available for
mound duty. Iris Marshall and Lee Souchereau
will •share the first base duties with Ann Cronyn
at second, Ann Jorgensen at third and Audrey
Pooley at shortstop. When Pooley is hurling new-
comer Judy Smith from Crediton will handle the
shortstop position.
Darlene Snell is the only holdover from last
year's outfield with newcomers Ann Baynham,
Mary Kerr, Connie Kernick and Marilyn Marshall
seeking the other two outfield posts.
INTEREST SLOWS DOWN
Unlike other districts this area seems to
be losing instead of gaining interest in track and
field events. At one time the local high school
had lots of track enthusiasts whenever they
staged their annual meet but now there. are only
a few participants while most of the students be-
come spectators or go home.
In the past, competition was keen and
there were always a few records broken, but
now it seems that there are only a few entrants
and the one who finishes is usually the victor.
In the last school meet that was held in
October no new marks were set but at the Exe-
ter Public School track meet that was held last
Friday three new records were established and
each event was heavily contested and it seems
that the high school can learn a few lessons from
these young athletes.
Pee Wee Girls' champion Jo Anne Inch
set a new softball throw of 60' 4" eclipsing Elsie
Gosar's previous high mark of 49' 6" while Brian
Vickerman and Brent Clarke also established
new marks. Vickerman jumped 3' 1" to break
the old record of three feet that was held jointly
by Dale McKenzie and Ian Johnston while Clarke
ran the 50-yard dash in eight seconds to eclipse
the old mark of nine and a third seconds that
was set by Doug Stanlake.
RUSTLINGS — Al Flynn of town was the
winner of the transistor radio that was raffled
off by the Exeter All-Star Squirts and dragn for
last Saturday. The Squirts made a total of $318
on the draw and plan to buy jackets for the
team . . The Detroit Tigers continue to remain
in the top half of the American League pennant
race and at the present time are still holding
their own in the junior circuit. After losing
their sixth doubleheader of the year to the Min-
nesota Twins last Friday the Bengals came back
to take the next two from the league leaders to
keep their record above .500 and if the Motor
City squad can maintain a long winning streak
they could move into the lead,

HITTERS DUEL
The game at Crediton was a
slugfest all the way with the
teams banging out a total of 31
hits that included eight doubles,
two triples and two home runs.
At the end of the fourth frame
the score was tied at nine
apiece but the Old Timers took
over from the fifth inning on to
score four more runs while
The Exeter Legion took over
undisputed possession of first
place in the Exeter Men's Re-
creation Softball League Mon-
day when they blanked Credi-
ton 7-0. In the other game play-
ed in Crediton, the Old Timers
won their first game of the
season after dropping the first
two by outlasting the Kinsmen,
who have yet to win a game, by
a 13-9 score.
Legion pitcher Don Mous-
seau, making his first appear-
ance of the year, came through
with a stellar performance by
blanking the Crediton crew al-
though they outhit the winners
5-4. Mousseau struck out four
and permitted only one runner
to reach third base as his mates
fielded flawlessly behind him.
The winners plated two runs
in the first frame on a double
by Murray Brintnell and a single
by Chub Edwards that was fol-
lowed up by a ground out and
a passed ball. Crediton hurler
Gord Slaght blanked the vet-
erans in the second inning but
was unable to hold them in the
third as they added five more
big runs to give Mousseau all
the lead that he needed.
The win was the second of
the season for the Legion who
have also tied one game while
Crediton absorbed their sec-
ond loss of the year.
Jim Pinder led the Legion's
batting attack with a double
and two runs batted in while
Murray Brintnell, Chub Ed-
wards and Cy Blommaert had
a single apiece.
Dick Coulter had two hits
for the losers while Don Dun-
