My best wishes go with my farewell to the students, teach- ers, board and indeed the whole school area. You are embarking on a new and stupendous under- taking which I will follow with interest for my thoughts will often be with Exeter and all the other municipalities that make up South Huron District High School. The culmination of the speeches was the end of the evening. There was more de- lightful conversation and words of mutual good wishes and farewell. When I finally drooped pil- loward, at about two a.m. I Was still too full of the rush of events to fall asleep, This was one of the few sleepless nights that I can remember with pleasure. I have relived that evening many times in of new and used cars the short time since it happen- ed. Alice and I wish to extend to our friends in South Huron District an open invitation to drop in at 133 Brain Ave„ Lon- don. Remember, we have a pool table in the Recreation Room for your enjoyment. Not the least of my good for- tune has been a generous mea- sure of good health which I took as my natural right. When I had my first taste of deprivation I didn't accept it with the best of grace. I determined after many misgivings that I would carry on as well as I could and hope for the best. When the time came for me to inform the board of my intentions for the coming year I wasn't in good enough health to take risks, Since then I am happy to be able to say that I can live in a very normal fashion as long as I don't spend energy recklessly. It is the people who make a community what it is and Exe- ter has more than its share of public-spirited, warm-hearted folk. Alice and I feel that we have become an integral part of this community. Naturally the school has been my chief centre of interest and I have had the thrill of seeing a rapidly expanding institution take its place with dignity in the field of education. There have been many times when I have been thrilled with efforts that the students of this school have made in all fields of endeavour. We were fortunate too in having students from the Air Station at Centralia. They have given the school a much more cosmopolitan air, coming as they do from every part of Canada and also in many cases from Europe. I was touched when, on Friday afternoon at an assembly, the president of the Students' Coun- cil presented me with a beauti- ful desk, This followed a pre- sentation of a desk set by the graduating class at their ban- quet. These scenes flashed through my mind as I sat await- ing my turn to try to say two words which seemed inadequate to carry all the emotional over- tones they were meant to en- compass—'good-bye and thanks'. I don't think I was adequate to the task of saying either, I did feel grateful for a chance to see teachers that I had been associated with and let them see that I had perhaps improved, like the cheese, with age. I did feel most grateful to have some of my oldest and best friends present and I was thrilled to be remembered by a gift — best of all the one that I wanted most in the world, My hope is that it may lure some to call on me who otherwise might not bother. In a sense I felt reproached. I Wished fervently that I had been the all wise, all patient, the far-seeing near diety that only my Wildest imagination could conjure up.liowever what's clone is done and all I can do is be grateful to those who identify my good intentions With a blundering performance. The SUCCESS of South Huron District High School over the past years was typified by this banquet. The Board provided the op- portunity, the leadership and behind-the-Scenes labour and the staff the on-stage direction. I wish to take this oppor- tunity of paying tribute to both for making my work here both interesting and rewarding. To parents I would like to say thanks for sending us young- sters who are so enthusiastic and co-operative. There could be no finer anywhere.
