study Easter
The WMS Easter meeting of
Carmel Presbyterian Church
was held in the Sunday School
room Monday evening April 12.
President Mrs. Earl Campbell
opened the meeting with an
Easter poem. Mrs. Rochus
Faber and Mrs. Len Purdy
conducted the devotional, the
theme being i‘The Empty
Tomb". The president took over
for the business part of the
meeting. An invitation from the
Lutheran ladies to attend their
May meeting was accepted. An
invitation from the Arnold Cir-
cle to attend their Easter meet-
ing April 19 was accepted.
The Ladies Aid meeting fol-
lowed with president Mrs. Har-
vey Hyde in charge, who an-
nounced that the bake sale held
Saturday realized $65.00 with
donations still to come in, and
the Sunday School children net-
ted $14.00 from the sale of
home made candy.

Passes tests
Miss Troyann Bell was suc-
cessful in passing her prelim-
inary figures and dances in
skating in St. Thomas Sunday.
She also took first place in
tests group work ages 10 to 11.
Saturday in Goderich she pass-
ed her solo in skating and was
advanced to senior grouping.
She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Stewart Bell.

Laird Mickle and Ann.
During the past week Mr, &
Mrs. J. C, Cochrane of Seaforth,
Mrs. Ross Dick of London, and
Mrs. R. S. Hopkinson of Green-
castle, Indiana, visited with
Mrs. Hugh McMurtrie,
Mrs. Laird Mickle attended
the afternoon tea last Saturday
given by Mrs. Harold Sturgis
held at the South HuronDistrict
High School, Exete r. Mrs.
Mickle was one of the ladies
who had the honor of pouring
tea.
Dr. Norma Hopkinson, Joan,
Bruce, and Mary Beth of Lion's
Head, were weekend guests with
the former's parents, Mr. &
Mrs. N. E, Cook,
Kinsmen donate
to minor sports
At the Kinsmen dinner held
Thursday evening a motion was
made to donate $50 to the Hen-
sall Minor Athletic Association.
A leave of absence was grant-
ed to Allan Crerar due to recent
illness. The draw for five thou-
sandness. pennies will be made the
end of April. President John
Baker presided for the busi-
ness.

Friends shower
bride with gifts
Miss Patricia Jones, Hensall,
whose marriage to Ralph Hol-
land, Clinton, will take place in
Hensall United Church Satur-
day, April 17 was feted prior
to her marriage at a miscel-
laneous shower arranged by
Mrs. Terry Laird and Mrs.
Lloyd Holland, co-hostesses,
and held at the home of Mrs.
Chas. Nelson, Clinton. A dainty
umbrella signified the shower
of good wishes extended to the
guest of honor.
Mrs. Laird and Mrs. Holland
directed a recreational period
and favorite recipes were re-
corded for future reference by
the bride-elect. The presenta-
tion address was read by the
hostess Mrs. Nelson, after
which an Easter Bunny, Master
Benny Laird, came "hopping
in" with gifts for the bride-
elect.
Guests were present from
London, Thedford, New Ham-
burg, Goderich, Clinton, Hen-
sall, and the Townships of Ash-
field and Goderich.

Zone head
visits ladies
MR. AND MRS. ARCHIE NOAKES
Mrs. Evelyn Carrol of Goder-
ich, Zone 1 Commander, paid
her official visit to the Legion
Ladies Auxiliary at their April
meeting Tuesday evening, April
6 speaking on the work of the
auxiliary. She was introduced
by president Mrs. Roy Smale.
It was announced that $216
was collected for the Red Cross
in the recent canvass of the
village by auxiliary members.
Plans were made for the
annual Penny Sale in May and
a euchre, April 30. Mystery
prize was won by Mrs. W. M.
Bell, and guessing prize, Mrs.
Gordon Munn.
Mark 50 years
Mr. and Mrs. Noakes were
at home to their neighbors and
friends Monday.
They were presented with
gifts and a purse of money
from the family with their son
Leonard making the presenta-
tion. They received a framed
message from the Province of
Ontario, congratulatory mes-
sages from Premier J. Robarts
and Hon. C. S. MacNaughton
and others.
A family dinner at the Dom-
inion Hotel, Zurich, Saturday,
April 10 marked the golden
wedding anniversary of Mr. and
Mrs. Archie Noakes of Hensall
with members of the family
attending from California, Tor-
onto, Chatham, Hamilton, Lon-
don and Hensall.
The wedding of fifty years
ago was solemnized by the late
Very Rev. Archdeacon W. J.
Doherty at his home in Hensall.
Mrs. Noakes, the former Annie
Richardson, daughter of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Richard-
son, was born in England coming
to Canada as a young girl. The
family settled in Kippen and
later in Hensall.
Mr. Noakes, also a native of
England, came to Hensall from
Goderich Township. Their at-
tendants at their wedding were
the late Mrs. Doherty and the
late G. C. Petty.
Residents of Hensall for over
30 years they recall their wed-
ding day with snow and plenty
of mud as they travelled by
horse and buggy on their wed-
ding trip.
They have three sons: Leon-
ard, Hensall; Lloyd, London;
Kenneth, Hamilton; two daugh-
ters, Mrs. Leaton (Frances)
Siemon, California, Mrs. Earl
(Helen) McKellar, Chatham, 26
grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.
Easter theme
for UCW unit
The E aster Thankoffering
meeting of UCW unit 3 was
held Monday evening amid a
setting of Easter lilies. Mrs.
Ron Mock, who presided, opened
with two Easter poems. Mrs.
Ross Corbett gave an Easter
meditation for her devotional
assisted by Mrs. Gordon Munn.
This unit is in charge of the
general meeting April 26 when
Mrs. Clysdale of St. Marys
will be guest speaker. The order
bake sale will be held Saturday,
May 8, when anyone wishing to
order baking may phone Mrs.
Ron Mock or Mrs. Wm. Mickle.
Mrs. Jean Cornell gave the
study "The Education of Trini-
dad". Mrs. Douglas Cook gave
humorous readings.
Hostess Mrs. A. Munn and
Mrs. Robt. Cook and Mrs. Walk-
er Carlile served lunch.

Communion Service was ob-
served Sunday morning at Ellin-
ville Church. The Confirmation
Class was accepted into mem-
bership with the church. The
new members were Misses
Barbara Gilfillan, Anne Herd-
man, Cheryl Hern, Janet Hem,
Brenda Skinner and Michael
Elford, Douglas Fletcher, Jam-
es Fletcher, Donald Kerslake
and Paul Kerslake.
Mrs. Russell Lee and Mrs.
Ross Mathers sang a duet dur-
ing the service.
Wins award
David Noakes, fourth year
UWO student in Honors Zoology,
has won awards to further his
studies. He was awarded the
Ontario Graduate Fellowship
and a $2,500 award from the
National Research Council of
Canada for post-graduate stud-
ies in science. Being unable to
accept both he chose the latter.
He will commence studies for
his M Sc as soon as his cur-
rent year at UWO is completed.

SUNRISE SERVICE
Hensall-Chiselhurst Youth
Fellowship are sponsoring
again this Easter time, a sun-
rise service. The service is to
be held in the United Church
sanctuary this Sunday morning
