To solve the problem, a completely separate wall structure was built for the new British Mortgage & Trust office. The new office is con- structed without abasement. Duct work under the flooring in the cement slab carries both the hot air from the oil- fired warm-air furnace and the cold air from the air- conditioner. In line with company policy, Canadian materials and products are used ex- tensively. Desks and tables were manufactured at Imperial Furniture in Stratford. Chairs were made by Kroeh- lers and the counter was cus- tom-made in Toronto. Original oil paintings by contemporary Canadian art- ists decorate the walls and ceramic ash trays andbowls are by Elaine Joyce of Strat- ford. You might say it's a story of Exeter family makes good. But that would be stretching a few points. However, the opening of a branch in Exeter, and now its own building, is some-thing of a homecoming for British Mortgage. The Gregory family which has been the steamhead be-hind the company's growth got its start in Exeter. The second president andmanag-Mg director, W. H. Gregory, was born in Exeter, son of Exeter High School Prin-cipal, Thomas Gregory. Now his son, Wilfrid P. Gregory, Q.C., has headed up the startling growth of Brit- ish Mortgage into fields beyond Perth County. But the story of the com- pany goes back to 1877, just 10 years after confederation, to a meeting of a group of district businessmen inLon- don, Ontario. n October 5th of that year the fledgling company was chartered as the "The Brit- ish Mortgage Loan Company of Ontario". At the close of the following year, the di- rectors moved the office of the company to Stratford, Ontario. Expansion of British Mortgage & Trust outside the Stratford area was begun in 1961 when the firstbranch office was opened in Can- ada's flower town, Bramp- ton. Since then the company has built new branch offices in Listowel, Goder , ich, lian- over, St. Marys, Richmond Hill and opened branches in Newmarket, Port Credit and five offices in Toronto. To administer this in- creased expansion, a larger head office was needed and in July, 1962, a fine new of- five building was opened in Stratford. Designed by the well- known Canadian architects, Rounthwaite and Fairfield, winners of the MasseyAward for their design of the Strat- ford Shakespearean Festival building, the new building has received wide acclaim. Based on a hexagon, Its design is unusual, attractive and highly ftmetional. As in all British Mortgage build-ings, extensive use is made of Canadian Workmanship, materials, fabrics and art.
