A contemporary off ice
building will house the Exe-
ter branch office of British
Mortgage & Trust.
Designed by the Toronto
firm of Rounthwaite and As-
sociates and erected by
Pounder Bros. of Stratford,
the building uses the most
modern design, material and
methods of construction.
Two roof heights lend add-
ed interest to the front and
give extra height inside. The
street facade is recessed
from the side walls for pro-
tection from the summer
sun.
A new and colorful rough-
textured material of quartz
chips embedded in pre-
stressed, pre-cast concrete,
forms a wide lateral band
across the upper portion of
the building. This band bears
the company's name in haut-
relief cast aluminum letters
and it is washed with light
from a concealed valance
trough.
Large sheets of glass form
the lower portion of the fa-
cade giving abundance of
light and a feeling of spac-
iousness to the interior.
The side walls, projecting
beyond the front of the build-
ing, are faced with random
range brick in tones of
brown.
A large panel of brick,
decorated with the c o m-
pany's crest cast in bronzed
aluminum, completes the
front exterior.
Inside, a raised ceiling
adds to the spaciousness.
One large wall bears a pro-
minent and unusual decora-
tion, "wallpaper" of green
Lackawanna leather hexa-
gons, some of which bear
the company's crest in gold.
Woodwork throughout the
office is of oiled walnut.
The main counter features
panels of green leather and
a black inlay top.
Light beige vinyl asbestos
over concrete flooring is
utilized throughout the pub-
lic areas. Moss greenScotch

Trust opens its new building
in an impressive ceremony
at 2 p.m.
Chairman of the Board, W.
IL Gregory, will snip the
golden ribbon, perhaps sym-
bolic of the company's im-
pressive growth, or perhaps
of the company's most im-
portant product.
The branch building is the
first major new development
on Main street for many
years. It is also an expan-
sion of our financial insti-
tutions in a bold new direc-
tion.
The building replaces the
company's temporary office
which was opened in June,
1963.
Architect of the building
C. F. T. Rounthwaite will
present the key of the build-
ing to the Hon- Charles Mac-
Naughton, Minister of High-
ways and M. L. A. for Huron,
who will unlock the door.
His Worship, Mayor Jack
Delbridge will present the
scissors to W. H. Gregory.

a gift as a souvenir. Re-
freshments will be served.
A silver estimating contest,
will be held with the prize

the offices.
Construction of the new
building presented an un-
expected problem in engi-
neering. A three-storey, 24-
room hotel, the last of Exe-
ter's seven hotels, had stood
on the site.
During demolition it was
discovered that a common
wall existed with the build-
ing to the north. Thus raz-
ing the hotel was impossible

Dig into the silver chest,
it's free to the winner
One of the features of the open house is a silver
estimating contest.
In the main lobby an elaborate blue and silver chest is
heaped with silver coins - dollars, 50, 25, 10, and "W
pieces. Visitors to the office may estimate the value of the
money in the chest.
The person who estimates the right amount - or closest
to it - wins as his prize - all the money he can scoop out
in both hands in one try.
Entries may be made at any time until the contest
closes on Thursday, April 15 at 4 p.m.
The ornate chest was made in the workshop of the
Stratford Shakespearean Festival for use in the play, The
Merchant of Venice, in 1955.
It is displayed on the red robe worn by Douglas Rain
when he played the title role in Xing John.
