you have. So they'll use yours,"
"But when do I start paying
off my mortgage on the house
and putting by for my old age?"
I whimpered.
"Don't worry about that", he
twinkled, "You Gan always re-
finance your mortgage at 18
percent interest. And I wouldn't
worry about your old age. By
the time you've paid to have
your grandchildren's te eth

sitively cackled) "paid for their
first ten years of dancing and
skating and music lessons, you
won't have any old age left."
All I could do was quote from
Hamlet, "For this relief much
thanks," and go quietly off to
check my insurance policies,
and look for my wife's bottle of
sleeping pills.

In despair, I sought out aneld
friend who has been through it
all with three sons and a daugha
ter. Surely he'd have some
words of comfort. He did.
"Smiley, old boy," he chor-
tled, there's nothing to it. But
you've forgotten a few items.
First of all, your son gets mar-
ried in third year college and
you subsidize them and the
baby, until he graduates. Then
there's your daughter's wed-
ding. Knowing your wife, I fi-
gure that will cost you one cool
grand. Then your son, and your
son-in-law, will take turns hit-
ting you up for a couple of thou-

"It's not that they're grasp-

New manager of the Bank of Montreal's Lucan branch
is Ian Dallas, left, who was formerly accountant of a branch at
St. Thomas. He succeeds John Steacy, right, who has been named
manager of the hank's Waterford office.
Mr. Dallas joined the B of M at Belleville in 1951 and
subsequently served in branches at Tweed, Toronto and Tren-
ton. In 1959, he moved to the bank's divisional headquarters
in Toronto, and served there until 1962, when he was appointed
accountant of the East End branch, in St. Thomas. While at St.
Thomas, Mr. Dallas was also treasurer of the Lions Club.
Mr. Steacy, the departing manager, has been in charge
of the Lucan branch since 1956. He was secretary of the Com-
munity Arena, treasurer of the Cancer Society, chairman of
the National Institute for the Blind, and a member of the Lucan

• Marie Robinson, six-year-
old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Bob Robinson of London and
granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Evan Hodgins of RR 1 Lucan,
was hit by a car, driven by
Mrs. Margaret Wood of Lon-
don, Thursday.
Marie is a Grade 1 pupil of
Roosevelt school and had just
left the school, when hit. She
was taken by the Thames Val-
ley Ambulance to Victoria Hos-
pital suffering from skull frac-
ture, a fractured left wrist and
facial laceration. Her condition
is reported satisfactory.
If I had it to do over again, I'd
raise my family differently. I'd
let the kids grow up in happy ig-
norance of the finer things of
life.
That's exactly what most of
my present family would have
preferred anyway, but the Old
Girl wasn't having any of it.
And I, like all docile North
American fathers, swallowed
all that jazz about "personality
fulfillment" and '4 developing
natural talent" and "creative
interests."
I've spent enough on music
lessons, for example, for those
kids to buy myself a brand new
Cadillac, or pay off half the
mortgage on my house.
This month, my son Hugh is
giving two piano recitals before
trying his music exam, the cul-
mination of ten years of lessons.
It's just about the culmination
of the old man's credit in these
parts, too. All it involves is the
rental of two halls, the printing
of two sets of invitations and
District reeves
hold card game
A euchre for reeves and their
wives was held in Strathmere
Lodge, Strathroy, last Wednes-
day night.
Among those attending were
Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Hearn of
Lucan, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson
Hodgins, RR 1 Lucan and Mrs.
George Phillips of Ailsa Craig.
(Mr. Phillips was sick and un-
able to attend).
Mrs. Hodgins won the ladies'
high score prize, a beautiful
pair of pillow cases.
programs, and the purchase of
new suits and dresses for the
whole family.
Even at that, I could fight my
way out of the morass of bills
and face the future, shaken but
game, if this were the end of the
affair.
But I learned, in a short but
devastating exchange with my
wife, that it's only the begin-
ning. "Well", I beamed, "at
least it'll be nice not to have to
pay for lessons next year, what
with all the expense of sending
him to college."
"Don't be silly!" she snap-
ped. "Of course he's going to
go on with his music next year.
He's scarcely begun."
And I reeled out of the room,
speechless. I could see the fu-
ture: old dad pumping the tread-
mill for the next ten years in
a welter of music lessons at
$13 a rattle and university fees
at $1500 a year. You see, just as
Hugh gets out of college, his sis-
ter, who also takes piano les-
sons at the same tariff, will be
ready to begin.
It isn't fair, somehow. In ten
years I'll be a broken, beaten
old man, ready for the bone-
yard, just when I should be
entering those golden years you
see in the insurance ads: trips
to Europe, curling, golf, fish-
ing.
And what will I get out of it
all? Likely nothing but a gaggle
of grandchildren, who will be
dumped with us every time their
