Area Headquarters of the Army

sports day with Clinton winning
five out of the eight events that
were run off to win the first

behind their Clinton rivals with
23 1/2 points while London and
Camp Borden finished with 10
and 9 points respectively.
Clinton recorded first place
finishes in the hockey, basket-
ball, badminton doubles, volley-
ball and bowling events while
Centralia finished a close sec-
ond in all of these competitions
and managed victories in
broomball, badminton singles
and the rifle shooting competi-
tion.
Centralia and Clinton were
neck and neck in most of the
events with the margin of vic-
tory being slight in every event.
Clinton edged their rival 5-4
in the hockey final, 53-41 in
the basketball final and 5451-

The three Exeter all star
teams started the new year
off on a winning note in the
Shamrock League when they
won all three games of a triple-
header here against Huron
HeightF Wednesday.
The pee wees posted a 5-i
Win while the bantams clobber-
ed Huron Heights by a 10-2
score and the midgets won a
9-2 game in the final contest
of the evening.
Coach Lorne Haugh's pee wee
squad, which is currently lead-
ing the league with 14 points,
picked up their eighth straight
win with an easy 5-1 victory
in the opening game of the
evening.
John Loader, the team's lead-
ing scorer, led the bantams
with a fine five-goal perfor-
mance as the locals laoed Huron
Heights 10-2. Bantam coach
Red Loader had his charges
fired up for this contest as they
led 2-1 at the end of the first
period but went on to score
four times in the second frame
and four more times in the
third stanza for the lopsided
win.
Besides Loader's five goals,
Bill Fairbairn and Graham Hern
scored two goals apiece and
Mike Hoy added a single.
Midget coach Frank Boyle,
who like some NHL coaches
employs the two goalie system
by alterating John Pryde and
Bill Farquhar in goal, had Far-
quhar between the pipes for the
third game of the evening and
the switch resulted in a con-
vincing 9-2 win for the locals.
The locals first line of Larry
Haugh, Chris Riddell and John
Guenther was the big driving
force in this game with Riddell
and Guenther each scoring two
goals and Haugh picking up a
single tally.
Playing coach Earl Wagner
scored twice to lead the Exeter
Junior Hawks to their 14th
Shamrock Junior , D" win here

the second place StrathroyJun-
tor Rockets by a 4-1 score
before the largest crowd of
the season, 415.
Wagner opened the scoring
at the 9:15 mark of the initial
frame when he converted passes
from linemates Craig Chapman
and Mike Cushman to give the
locals a.1-0 lead.
Cam Brady tied the score
with Dale Turvey of the Hawks
serving an interference penalty
but Cushman scored what prov-
ed to be the winning goal when
he beat two Strathroy defenders
to a loose puck and walked in
unmolested to score the nicest
goal of the evening and his 19th
of the season.

The Luca n-Ilderton Com-

four wins and four losses by
outlasting the first place Forest
Lakesides for an exciting 6-4
win in Lucan Friday night.
The win was the second in
a row for the Combines over
the Lakesides as the Irish ap-
pear to be ready to make their
move in the three-team Inter-
mediate "B" loop.
Friday's game was a closely
played contest throughout with
the first period ending up at
1-1 and the second 4-4 before
the Combines broke out for two
unanswered tallies in the third
period.
A total of 20 penalties were
handed out in the rugged contest
with ten being called in a wild
second frame that also produced
six goals.
Combines' goaltender Keith
Scarborough played a fine game
and was particularly outstand-
ing in the third period when he
shut the Lakesides out while
Barry Hearn and John Campbell
put the game out of the reach
of the fast skating Forest crew.
Hearn's goal at the 9:12 mark
of the third frame turned out
to be the winning marker and
came on passes from defense-.
man Steve Storey and Don Urb-
shott.
Two veterans, Steve Storey
and Stu O'Neil paced the Com-

Last week the Exeter Pee
Wees began tuning up for the
Watford Silver Stick Tourna-
ment by tying third place Lam-
beth 4-4 and defeating Huron
Heights 10-2 on Wednesday in
Shamrock League action and
swamping Clinton 13-0 in WOAA
play.
The locals started off quickly
in the Lambeth game that was
played in Stra.throy on Monday
When rightwinger Chris Riddell
scored two fast goals to give
the Exeter club a 2-0 first
period lead.
The Second period ended with
Exeter holding a slim 3-2 lead
but Lambeth outscored the lo-
cals 2-1 in the third frame with
the tying goal being scored with
less than three Minutes remain-
ing in the last period.
Chris Riddell notched two
goals for the locals with JOhn
Guenther and Brad Klurrini add-
ing singles.
After defeating the H ur on
Heights club on Wednesday, the
boys journeyed toClintonRCAF
on Friday and came home with a
convincing 13-0 victory.
The Exeter squad completely
dominated this contest with
their first line of Larry Haugh,
John Guenther and Chris'Riddell
doing Most of the scoring.

With four goals while Jim Guen-
ther and Riddell picked up hat

Mike McLaughlin, In the Exe-

From all reports both the senior and the
junior girls' basketball squads at SHDHS will be
leading threats for Huron-Perth Conference hon-
ors again this year.
The two units, the juniors under Miss
Liepins and the seniors under Miss Lauretta
Siegner have been drilling for several Weeks and
are now eagerly awaiting their first taste of se-
rious competition when they meet Goderich at
the local school on Friday for the first Confer-
ence game of the season.
The outlook for this year's senior team is
brightened by the addition of several former
junior standouts who won their grouping last
year but were defeated in WOSSA competition,
while the junior team is made up of quite a few
eager but untried hoopsters who will need a bit
of experience before their future can be pre-
dicted.
Similar to the boys' teams, the girls will
play a six-game schedule, There is a total of ten
schools in the Conference but the girls will com-
pete against Goderich, Stratford Northwestern,
Clinton, Seaforth, St. Marys and Wingham with
the other schools making up another division.
On February 27 the top three teams of
the two divisions will meet in a tournament in
Clinton with the winning team earning the right
to represent the Huron-Perth Conference at
WOSSA.
MINORS DOING WELL
Exeter's minor hockey picture looks quite
rosy as the current season reaches the halfway
point of the schedule. At the present time three
out of the five Exeter minor clubs that compete
in the Shamrock League are leading their respec-
tive groupings. The Exeter pee wees, midgets
and, juniors are in the lead while the bantams
trail first place Stoneybrook by a scant two
points. The Exeter squirts, however, are firmly
imbedded in sixth place with two winS and five
ties in 11 games.
The pee wee squad under coach Lorne
Haugh and manager Lyle Riddell have a very
impressive record of eight wins and one tie while
Frank and Clarence Boyle's midget club boasts
a record of six wins, one loss and one tie.
Manager Lloyd Cushman and coach Earl
Wagner hold down first place in the Shamrock
Junior 'ID' League with an impressive record of
14 wins and two losses while coach Red Loader
and manager Gord Baynham have their bantams
beginning the second half of the schedule with
a record of six wins, one loss and one tie, only
a couple of points out of first place.
Bill Gilfillan's Exeter squirts are off to a
slow start but the coach is optimistic and is hope-
ful that his charges, similar to the Chicago Black
Hawks, will be able to hit their stride later on
in the season and move up towards the top of
their league.
It is to be hoped that the minor clubs can
continue their fine play during the second half
of the season and that in the future more peo-
ple will turn out to support these youngsters
who are representing the community.
MINOR HOCKEY WEEK COMING UP
Arena Manager Alvin Willert has sched-
uled a Family Night at the Exeter Arena on Jan-
uary 23. Minor Hockey Week will .begin on this
date and the minor houseleague, which is usual-
ly scheduled for Saturday morning will be run

morning will be able to see their favourite player
in action.
All houseleague teams from squirts to
midgets will see action and the Exeter Minor
Hockey Association invites you to come out to
see these youngsters who play the game with zest
and enthusiasm.
Later on, in early February, three teams
from St. Clair Shores, Michigan will be in town
to play a tripleheader with the three Exeter all-
star clubs in a rematch of last year's games that
were played before a large audience.
AND FINALLY — The Exeter Pee Wees
will journey to Watford this weekend to com-
pete with other Ontario and Michigan teams in
the annual Watford Silver Stick Tournament,
The locals are eagerly looking forward to a re-
turn match with the strong Dresden squad that
eliminated them from the recent Leamington
Tournament . . The Exeter Junior Hawks who
have been displaying some fine hockey of late
have been getting some fine crowds lately and
expect a large turnout this Friday when they
