Dinney feneral home, Exeter, with buri4 in Exeter cemetery, He died Thursday, December 24 in St. Joseph's Hospital, London. He was born in tho north of pahorne TeWnshiP, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Earl and attended Lem- ley school. In 1903 he moved to Con 8 and 9 liaborne where he farmed until retiring to Exe- ter in 1958. He was an elder of the church and a Sunday School Super* tendeat for many years and later was a member of James Street UC Exeter. Surviving are his wife the former Elsie Gunning, three daughters, Mrs. Everard (Ed- ith) Miller, Mrs. Howard (Mary) Kerslake and Mrs. Philip (M a rj o r ie) Johns, 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Allen contended the situation was similar to that of using taxpayers' money to subsidize losses incurred by the truck- ing setup of the CNR. "They put other truckers out of business, and are subsidized by tax dollars," he remarked. Thomas suggested the London plant could be organized as a farmers' co-operative. Lloyd Lovell, Kippen, asked if the objections over the grow- ers having the plant was coming from big processors or small ones. Hill stated there were ob- jections from all proces'sors and added the situation was one of the main reasons why one dealer now handled two-thirds of the Ontario bean crop. "If it wasn't for the Board he would have it all," Allen retorted. He stated that two co- operatives had gone out of the bean processing business be- cause they were too small and for no other reason. "Beans are a specialized crop requiring expensive ma- chinery", he said, "and you either have to get bigger or get out." Mrs. Quinlivan Prepare for changes Two people who will be busy in the new year are area inspector Gil Burrows and his secretary, Mrs. Jack Fulcher. They'll have extra work due to the vast changes being made in education administration. merry in their class. Elmer Hunter, RR, 2 Gedera clueettened if it was the parents or teachers who were to blame for stress. "possibly we are driving our children to the ppint where stress takes over and maybe we should educate parents as well as atudepts," he suggested.. Gordon Hill, Varna, question- et1 Mre. Lobb on how better teachers could be attained, She then went on to say teach- ers—especially in elementary schoolea, clide't know how to spell, or read or didn't know their basic work. She also said they didn't know geography and this was result- ing "in some strange errors being taught". She said she would go mad if half her class were to fail if she was still teaching. "What if they just didn't know the work?" questioned Charlie Thomas. Mrs. Lobb said she would "die in the attempt" to teach them and a member chided that this certainly would be stress. Thomas suggested people were being "pretty pessimis- tic" if they say teachers were getting poorer. "How do we account for our better educa- tion?" he asked. Hemingway suggested class- es were too big and teachers didn't become acquainted with students and the teachers couldn't inspire them with 300 "going through the door each day". "At that age they have to be able to do some things for them- selves," Lovell commented. Thomas ended the discussion when he said perhaps it wasn't important for students to get to know the teachers, noting machines were doing well in teaching. "Maybe we should take ad- vantage of automation to get the better teachers to teach more pupils," he concluded. --T-A photo teachers, Ppiai4Mg when she was teaching no more than one atedent in 20 failed, Hpwever, she stated it, was now okay to have 50% of a class fail and you won't get fired". Notieg it cost $600 to educate one student at Clinton, she said this money was lost if the Sea 44t failed. "Peek in the elea mentary aehgoi is where we are wrong," ahe said. Mrs. Lebb reported students were ill-prepared for high school because they didn't know how to spell, didn't have to read after grade three and didn't know the meaning of words. "No setup will help this," Mrs. ,Lobb added, "not even vocational." The former teacher also said there shouldn't be so much emphasis on ceiling out stu- dents, but rather more univer- sities should be built so more could be educated. She said there phould be less concern about vocational train- ing, because "any vocation is open if you have grade 13". Carl Hemingway, Brussels, agreed there was stress, but opined it was brought about be- cause of the fact students knew only so many in the class would be permitted to pass. He suggested education should have standards for stu- dents to meet and there should be an end to "manipulation" of marks scaa. certain percent- age of the class would pass. He said there was always one grade 13 exam that was above all reason of difficulty and the number of grads was deter- mined by manipulating the marks in this one exam. "Last year it was algebra," Mrs. Lobb remarked, adding the teachers at Clinton admitted they couldn't pass the exam themselves. 'Hemingway said there should be standards but stress was being put on students because they knew they had to beat so DEFENDS MINISTER MacNaughton then made a comment to the critical re- marks made by Allen about the Agriculture Minister and gave some information in an effort to prove Stewart was sensible in his remarks about the export market. He said Stewart quite sensibly wondered why U.S.A. imports were increasing in the United Kingdom and Canada's were not. MacNaughton stated the U.S. bean growers set their price in April and it was reasonable that something similar to that could be done here. dies in hospital Mrs. Amelia Quinlivan, 87, died in South Huron Hospital Saturday, December 26. Legislation . on social prob- lems will reflect the concern of Christian youth that help is needed by teenagers to under- stand sexual maturation. And for this reason the church and the public schools have an opportunity and re- sponsibility to answer this need. consideration be given to join- ing together Stanley and Tuck- ersmith and construct one cen- tral school for both in the vicinity of Brucefield." The inspector explained this would present the opportunity to build a school to accommo- date approximately 360 which would mean between 10 and 11 classrooms. He has asked both boards to meet together early in January to give the plan positive 'con- sideration. Main reason for the proposal is that neither township is in the situation where it can pro- vide complete graded educa- tion on its own. At the present there is atwo- room school at Bayfield and nine one-room schools in Stan- ley. In Tuckersmith, there is a two-room school in Egmond- ville and seven one-room schools throughout the town- ship. Members of the Stanleyboard are: Merton Merner, Jack Tay- lor, Bruce Keyes, George Can- telon and James Cleave. Those from Tuckersmith: Orville Workman, Bill Wilson, Ken Gib- bings, Verne Alder (1 ic e and Henry Binnendyke. —Continued from front page ments, will be $146,000. This will bring it to a full eight- room school. Tentative plans call for a similar addition at Hensall and plans are expected to material- ize there in the very near future. Cost has been estimated at $90,- 000 as no major changes appear needed in the heating system or present building. The additions at Zurich and Hensall eliminate the use of the four one-room schools now in use and would provide accom- modation at either centre for all students In the township. There are about 530. Burrows said he hoped to see both school additions com- pleted in time for September occupancy. LESS DEFINITE Plans for school improve- ments in Stanley and Tucker- smith are less definite, but the proposal that will be ad- vanced is that a limited ad- dition of classrooms — possibly two — be made at Bayfield in order to accommodate the single school sections adjacent to the resort community. At the October meeting, the motion was presented after a meeting with the road super- intendent, other road workmen and the head DHO engineer from the London office. The latter was reported as saying the complaint against O'Shea was "a lot of damned childish nonsense". Bryan gave no indication of why other members of council wished to fire the road super- intendent. He concluded his address by reporting that 1963 and 1964 taxes were inadequate and he also made the charge that as- sessment in the township was in fact not equalized.
