TEMPLEMAN STAFFA The Staffa hall was the setting for a pot luck dinner in connec- tion with the annual meeting of the Senior Citizens of Cromarty and Staffa club. Rev, and Mrs. Bert Daynard were guest speak- ers. The president, Mr. H. Carey, opened the meeting and routine ,usiness was dealt with. Mrs. Bowman called the roll, using "What would you like for Christmas" as the topic. The invitation from Staffa UCW was accepted. January 12 is the date for the next meeting. Rev. Bert Daynard installed the officers for 1965 as follows: President, Tom Laing; vice- president, Darrell Parker; sec- retary, Wilbur Miller; trea- surer, Mrs. Wilbur Miller; roll call secretary, Mrs. Cecil Bow- man; press secretary, Mrs. Grace Scott; pianist, Mrs. R. McCaughey. The new president took the chair and a singsong of Christ- mas carols followed. Mrs. Day- nerd gave a timely message on "How and Why we celebrate Christmas". ""In the present age", she said, "we are so involved in preparing and de- corating for Christmas there is little room in our hearts for the real meaning of Christ- mas." Mr. Daynard expressed their appreciation for be ing present and hoped that more would join the group, as a Senior Citizens group is a very worth- while organization in a com- munity. Mr. Tom Laing moved a vote of thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Daynard. Mrs. Bowman and Miss Olive Speare expressed appreciation to the retiring of- ficers and the pianist. It was the British cruiser Exe- ter which bore the brunt of the New courses set at Clinton Principal D. J. Cochrane, Central Huron Secondary School, announced this week the Clinton school would be intro- ducing two new fields of in- struction on Januray 4. In the sheet metal and weld- ing program of the technical department, instruction will be given in aluminum welding. A Tungsten Inert Gas Welder has been provided so that students of the two and four year pro- grams may be trained in a new and very valuable skill. There is an extreme shortage of aluminum welders and at the moment the only known course available is in the city of King- ston. A number of people have been coining from as far away as British Celtenbia to take this course. The employment trends indicate that there will be a very strong demand for people trained in this new and modern skill. The equipment will also be available for use by the averting School Classes. Data processing is beng in- troduced into the business Ma- chines course of the cbtri- rnercial department and will be begun with the Installation of an I.B.M. Key Punch Unit. This will allow the students of Grades 11 and 12 of the four-year pro- gram and students of the special commercial course Who have achieved a typing speed of at least 45 words per minute to obtain practical experiehte in key punch work. "The nee of data processing is expanding rapidly in the dorn- niercia.1 field arid this is the first stage in introducing a Complete theoretical and practical pro- gram to enable the graduates of the school to coinpete more successfully in the Job world of the inture", Mr. Cochrane said. thing as apurely rural Corn Meet- ity" in Southern Ontario now: Rural and teleaficoniinunities depend upon each Other for co-ordinated supply of produce and SerVitee, Ronald Skinner; of RA 1 "Mit- chell, was 'elected presideet Succeeding Mertryn Wenzel of Gowanstown. But then women started booz- ing, and things heve gone from bad to hopeless. Mixed drink- ing developed. And the only thing worse than mixed drink- ing is mixing your drinks. Social Drinking has all the potential destructive power of The Bomb. It leads to broken promises, broken dishes, brok- en noses, and broken homes. The only good thing about it, and the only reason it is so pop- ular, is that it enables one to put up with all the bores and boors, the knuckleheads and knotheads, the dopes and dullards, with which society seems to be in- fested nowdays (except for the sparkling people, like you and me). Now, I hope I haven't thrown a wet blanket on your plans for a wet holiday season. But just to end this little homily, may I remind you the lines written in eleventeen seventy-seven . by that great Welsh poet. Senator Ratz of New Hamburg spent Tuesday in Crediton the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Zwicker. President John Mallett of the Exeter Band gave a rabbit sup- per and social evening Friday to the band boys and their lady friends in the Central Hotel. Christmas night was the cold- est of the season-the thermo- meter registered 5 below zero. There is little use in com- plaining about the rigors of putting up my tree, the horrors of trying to find a present for My wife, the abyss of debt into which I am plunging. I know how much sympathy I'd get. We're all in the same boat. But, with the holiday season coming up, accompanied by its usual parties, I thought it might be a good time for your friend- ly old uncle Bill to pause and ex- amine that phenomenon of the second half of the 20th century- Social Drinking. Social Drinking is one of those beautifully vague terms we're so fond of these days. They cov- er a multitude of sins, and yet, somehow, they sound respecta- ble. It's like "Neurotic". The lady who is nutty as a fruitcake will inform you with some pride, "I'm terribly neurotic, you know." Fifty years ago, she wouldn't have announced so freely that she was batty. Social Drinking is similar. The fellow who is so hung-over the blood is running out his eyes, will tell you, "I'm strictly a Social Drinker." Everytime I hear the term So- cial Drinking, I utter a couple of short, barking laughs. Social Drinking is just an excuse for getting plastered in public, in- stead of quietly and decently at home, or out behind the barn. Social Drinking and the Cock- tail Party go hand in hand. A Cocktail Party is any gathering of Social Drinkers, slopping free liquor into empty stomachs at a rate which suggests pro- hibition is about to become law within the hour. They make a gesture toward the social end of it by eating a cracker, with a dead sardine on it, with every fifth drink, Don't confuse sociable drink- ing with Social Drinking.Socia- ble drinking is a quiet glass with an old friend, by the fire; a cou- ple of bottles of cold beer, out fishing; a hot noggin, in compa- ny, after a winter's day outside. But Social Drinking is a horse of a different hue. Ask the housewife who comes down in the morning after a Cocktail Party, head thumping like a bongo, and is confronted by the following; a cigarette-burn on her new coffee-table; a puree of whiskey-and-ashes on her white linen tablecloth; a purple splotch on her lemon carpet; 28 dirty glasses; a lady's hand- bag; a man's hat; 14 empty cigarette packages; and her husband snoring on the chest- erfield. Ask the chap who drops in for a drink - just one - before facing the spouse and spawn, after work. He gets talking with the boys, arrives home an hour late. He's a little high-spirited, but ZION CHURCH Evangelical United Brethren CREDITON A. M.
