The Exeter Junior Hawks .have a new coach. He is Earl Wagner, centre of the Hawks most productive forward line and veteran of four seasons of junior hockey competition, who Will fill the role of playing coach. Earl succeeds Red Leader who was forced to resign his posi- tion because of other coaching duties that put a premium on his time. Loader coaches the local bantam club that plays in both the WOAA and the Shamrock League, Wagner is no stranger to hockey fans in the district as he has starred for the last three seasons as a member of the Hensall-Zurich Cana- bines, and was one of their leading scorers last year when they captured the Ontario Junior `D' championship. A Zurich native, Earl played most of his minor hockey there with the pee wee, bantam and midget clubs, each of which captured a WO- AA and OHA crown under coach Don O'Brien. While being a fine playmaker and an in- tense performer at all times, Wagner will attempt to instill confidence in his charges 'to mould them into a top contender for Ontario Junior `D' hon- ours this year. At the present time the Hawks lead the league with nine wins and one loss and seem to be improving every time out. Wagner came on strong in his new role over the weekend as he shook up the forward lines to come up with a lopsided 154 win over Belmont Friday and a close 4-3 victory over Del- hi Sunday. The new coach replaced high scoring Fred Lamb with Mike Cushman on the first line with himself and Craig Chapman while Bill. Chip- chase was moved to centre Rick Boyle and Den- nis Morrissey. Chipchase responded to the change by scoring four goals against Belmont and added two assists in Delhi to help make his coaches' debut a successful one, Exeter Hawk officials are hopeful that the coaching change will spark the team and that 'they will maintain their winning ways. KIDS OFF TO TOURNEY Every Christmas Holiday period seems to bring on minor hockey tournaments in the area and this year will be no exception with two of the three Exeter Minor Hockey Association clubs competing at Riverside and Leamington. The lo- cal pee wee squad under coach Lorne Haugh and manager Lyle Riddell will travel to Leamington January 1 and 2 while coach Red Loader and manager Gord Baynham will take their bantam club to Riverside next Monday. For anyone who happens to be on holi- days during the next two weeks these hockey tourneys should provide a lot of entertainment and we know that the local players would ap- preciate seeing a few familiar faces in the crowd to cheer them on. AND FINALLY - At his present torrid scoring pace it appears that Bobby Hull of the Chicago Black Hawks is well on his way to set- ting a new NHL record for goals scored in a sea- son, Hull has scored 28 times to date and needs to score only 23 goals in his remaining 22 games to eclipse Maurice Richard's record of 50, Hull will need over 400 goals to catch Detroit's Gordie Howe who is the leading point getter in NHL his- tory. Howe who is considered the games greatest has a total of 628 goals while Hull has scored 253. . Football fans who enjoy viewing NFL games on television every Sunday and who pity the poor players who are subjected to playing in zero temperatures, snow and biting winds, might not show as much concern for the players' welfare if they knew what each player was be- ing paid. This year's NFL Championship game between the Baltimore Colts and the Cleveland Browns will be played in Cleveland's huge lake- front stadium where a capacity crowd of 83,000 people will produce a total gate of $260,000.00 after taxes. lt is reported that each member of the winning team will receive more money for this one game than the members of the St, Louis Cardinals received for winning this year's World Series in seven games . - Anyone who wishes to travel to Port Huron by bus to see the Hawks play on Sunday afternoon is asked to register at the Arena. The bus, which requires 30 people, will leave the arena at 10 o'clock for the 2 o'clock contest. Total cost for the day's outing which in- eludes admission to the game as well as trans- portation Will be $3.00. 24\lasketfu/0 Good Wishes ARENA ACTIVITIES Goalies stealing show in kids' houseleagues Please accept our sincere good wishes for a happy, joyful Yuletide . . . rich in love and warm friendship! game and it looks as if we have some future hockey stars in this group. All the scoring seems to have been for the No. 2 team as they defeated the No. 1 team 4-0. Martin Overholt, H o w ar dSch- enk, John Geiser and Leslie Page each scored a goal in a winning cause. By ALVIN WILLERT In a well played pee wee houseleague game on Saturday morning the Wings and Leafs battled to a scoreless tie. John Hayter in the nets for the Wings had to come up with several good saves to keep the Leafs off of the score sheet. Allan Parsons a replacement for the regular goalkeeper play- ed well in the nets for the Leafs and deserved the shut- out. The second game was one of the better games played in houseleague as the Canadiens handed the Hawks their first loss of the season by a score of 3-2. For the winners, Jim Guenther, Lee Browning and Randy Becker each scored a goal and for the Hawks Larry Haugh scored both goals. After several player trades it looks as if the Pee Wee teams are quite evenly balanced if the scores of late are an indication. * * * * In squirt hockey the Red Wings ran roughshod over the Blue Wings with a score of 4-0.
