For children, much of the fun
of any holiday is the anticipa-
tion. The fun of getting ready
lives in their memory far longer
than any of the well-chosen
presents. It may be more work
for mother, but work that is
ever so rewarding.
Let the children help decor-
ate the house, trim the tree,
and putter in the kitchen. A real
fun project is a. decoration that
is good to eat, Who Cares if in
stringing popcorn or making
popcorn balls, more popcorn is
eaten than not.
POPCORN BALL 'TREE
An easy decoration that chil-
dren can help make is a pop-
corn ball tree with miniature
pop corn packages tied with
bright red bows.
To make the tree and pack-
ages as pichlred, you will need
4 quarts of popcorn. Pop it 111
two batches following the basic
directions for popcorn given
below. Then make two batches
of the candied popcorn mixture
(recipe given) leaving one batch
uncolored and tinting one batch
a light green.
You'll also need gumdrops
and other candy rings and de-
corations for the tree. You may
want to use tiny birds as in the
picture but other ornaments
could be used as well. Don't
forget the ribbon for the pack-
ages. Prepare the uncoloured
batch of candied popcorn and
press part of it Into a lightly
greased pan (8 x 8 x 2-inch),
filling the pan to the top. (Shape
the remaining part Into balls
for eating.) Cool, Remove from
pan. Cut off two sides leaving
a square 6 x 6 inches. Reserve
the pieces for making the pack-
ages.
stand a 14-inch long I/2-inch
dowel stick upright in the 6-inch
square of candied popcorn. Pre-
pare 1 batch of green candied
popcorn Mixture. Perm into
three balls of graduated sizes
of five, three and one and one
half inches in diameter. Press
balls firmly, then run end of
dowel stick through each ball
to make a hole. Remove balls
from stick, let cool and harden.
To assemble tree, drop two
gumdrop rings over dowel onto
popcorn square; add large pop-
corn ball. Add two more gum-
drop rings, 'then a Medium size
ball, two more rings and then
the smallest ball. Top stick
with rounded gumdrops.
