ON THE MOVE
One of the lengthiest reports
of the meeting was given by
PUC chairman R. E. Pooley,
outlining many of the improve-
ments made during the past two
years, and also planned for the
near future.
After thanking members of
council for their co-operation,
the former mayor pointed out
no members of council had
remarked on the extra amount
of work they had created for
the PUC in the past two years.
He went on to say that the
recent rate revision was not
altogether an increase, as some
users had actually had lower
rates and all had better ser
vices.
No mention was made of the
Lake Huron pipeline, but Pooley
gave an indication of the amount
of water used when he reported
there were 35 million gallons
used in July this year. In 1963,
there were 147,604,000 gallons
pumped.
The report prepared for the
chairman showed an extensive
amount of work during both
GARBAGE COLLECTION
Councillor Jack Delbridge,
chairman of the sanitation com-
mittee, asked the ratepayers to
bear with the garbage collectors
when the garbage is picked up
on the wrong day.
He noted that Paisley often
has important work for the
men and the truck and it is
often better that this work be
done rather than having the
garbage picked up.
"He (Paisley) has saved the
town some money," he added.
Delbridge concluded by say-
ing he hoped a satisfactory
remedy could be found for the
problems with the town-operat-
ed lagoon at Canadian Canners.
The next report was from
Councillor Norm Ferguson, who
explained the improvements and
additions made around the town
hall park and the town hail itself
by his property committee.
Councillor Taylor told the
meeting he felt the acquisition
of a radar unit had paid big
dividends in curbing the amount
of speeding in the community.
He also said the two-hour
Exeter's nomination meeting
attracted. abOut 60 people, Fri,
day, and resulted in flowery
Words of Preiee for retiring
Mayor Simmons and Reeve
Fisher, as well as works pupere
intendent Jim Paisley, Clerk
C, V, Rickard and his assistant,
Jean Taylor.
With Tom MacMillan acting
as chairman, the meeting ran
smoothly an quickly, with the
brief reports by various elected
and appointed officials resulting
in few questions from the floor.
The press ran into some
criticism from Reeve Fisher
and council candidate Don Mac-
Gregor but was defended by
RAP chairmani Tom MacMillan.
MacMillan pointed out that
while members of his group
became excited over some of
the reports of their meetings,
he said the press was dieing its
job by being present and report-
ing it.
"If he doesn't do his job you
people don't know whether we
are doing ours," he stated.
In his brie report to the
ratepayers, Mayor Simmons
said it had been a pleasure to
be on council and stated he
always attempted to take a long-
range view of things on which
he was called on to make de-
cisions.
He noted his decisions were
not always agreeable to every-
one.
Reeve Fisher termed his stay
on council as "nine gratifying
years" and reported on some of
the highlights of those years
and the work of the past year
on county council.
He told the ratepayers that
welfare in Exeter was not as
big of a problem as in many
other communities and also took
time to note the benefits of the
new sanitary system, the swim
pool and the amalgamation of
various committees under RAP.
Fisher is presently chairman
of the health committee in Huron
and said the county did not have
to take a back seat to any other.
He noted there was presently
