Scott Burton's goal at the 7;07 mark of the first stanza was all that goalie Bill Farqu- har needed as the Exeter Mid- gets went on to defeat Stoney- brook 2-0 in a fast moving tilt. The goal- 111111141111•104116 After some doubt it finally appears the district Intermediate league will operate this sea• son with four teams. The league, which last year operated with nine homelarevv clubs, will be made up of Stratford, Seaforth, Forest and the 'Aldan- Ilderton Combines, who were last year's league champions. The Combines will be considered the team to beat this year as they 'prepare to defend their title against the three other clubs, two of Which will be much stronger than in the past,. The Seaforth squad, who went all the way to the Ontario finals two years ago, will be re- inforced by the addition of the two Dick broth- ers, Tom and Jim, who toiled for the St. Marys Lincolns 'in the Junior 'B' League last year. The Forest Lakesides, who were elimi- nated by the Combines last year in a tough, hard- fought series, will also be very strong with vet- erans Stan Ulrich and Tussy Dunham, two for- mer Senior 'B' performers, along with several former Sarnia Junior 'B' chattels. The Stratford entry will probably be made up of the best players of that city's fine indus- trial league that has been in existence for quite some time. From all indications the league should be well balanced with each club having its share of veterans and youngsters. It also appears that each club will have plenty of scoring power. The Combines are currently drilling at the Lucan Arena and from all reports the squad will be strong in every department 'and will have a very good chance of recapturing •the league title. As in the past the Lucan-Ilderton entry has added another couple of former Junior 13' per- formers 'in defenceman Floyd Cowper and high scoring winger John Campbell, who both played for St. Marys last year. At the present time the Combines have not secured a coach but the players are con- ducting their own workouts and are currently tuning up for their home opener this Friday night against Seaforth. In order to start the season off with a bang, the Combines are admitting everyone into the rink free 'of charge to see the first game of the season. COULD BE TOUGH ON GOALIES After several workouts the Combines have assembled three strong forward lines that should provide a lot of anxious moments for opposing netminders. Lanky Tom Collings, who has always been one of the top point-getters in the group- ing, centers a line with Max and Stu O'Neil on the wings. This threesome has always been one of the most dangerous attacking units in the league and they seem to improve with age. Three former St. Marys Lincolns, Doug Galloway, Barry Hearn and Dusty Aldis, who have been with the Combines for a couple of years, make up the second attacking unit, while Bill Neil, who was voted the Combines Rookie- Of-The-Year last year, along with Ken Loft and John Campbell will make up the third line. Most of last year's defence will be return- ing and will be bolstered considerably by the ad- dition of Floyd Cowper of St. Marys who was the Lincolns' captain and a steady defensive per- former last year. Cowper will team up with vet- eran Steve Storey While Lucanite Terry Hodgins will pair up with Bev Urbshott to give the Com- bines a strong defensive corps. Keith Scarboro, who has had many fine seasons in goal for the Combines, and young Ed Harrigan will probably share the goaltending duties throughout the year. Several Lucan minor products have also been impressive in workouts as well as veteran Don Fletcher of St. Marys, who has worn a Lu- can sweater for quite a few years. Bill Marshall, who played for the St. Thomas Barons last year, should also help. With the addition of Stratford, the league should be more interesting than the three-team grouping which was earlier proposed. The calibre of the league will also be quite high with sev- eral players having seen action with Senior 'A', Senior '13' or Junior 'B' squads in the past. Due to this fact area hockey enthusiasts will be able to witness a lot of fine hockey this season. And don't forget, it's FREE this Friday night in Lucan when Seaforth comes to the Irish town, LADIES "11" LEAGUE JS (G. Skinner 56.8) 2 MM S. Wright 540) 5 pP, (A. ittiggalier 554) 2 BB (d.
