Mrs. Pearl Shaddick, Hen-
sail, who has served as an
operator for 29 years will re-
tire when the cut over to dial
comes into effect here at 2 am
November 15.
Mrs. Shaddick started her
career as an operator at Clinton
under the late Mrs. ClaraRum-
ball, manager, and Miss Lily
Kennedy, chief operator.
For 15 years she has been
night operator in Hensall and
has giVen very efficient service
during that period. She was
never too busy to give the
correct time and hockey scores.
She recalls as night operator
the big snow storm which held
up the Huron and Bruce train
for a week when passengers had
to stay at the farm home of Mr.
James Mustard and the late
Mrs. Mustard of Kippen,
She also recalls the $50,000
disastrous fire in Hensall when
a block of buildings on main
street adjacent to the town hall
including Twitchell's garage,
Weber's shoe store and other
stores and apartment buildings.
Occupants of the apartments,
who were crippled, had to be
carried out of their homes by
firemen. The block was com-
pletely destroyed.
DIAL SERVICE means faster, better
telephone service for our Hensall
customers. Simply lift the receiver—
listen for a moment to make sure
you hear the 'Dial Tone'—then dial
"262" plus the four figures of the
phone you want to reach!
WIDER LOCAL CALLING means
that telephone users in Hensall will
be able to call friends or associates
in Clinton, Exeter, Seaforth and Zur-
ich without Long Distance charges.
You will simply dial the full seven
figures of the number you want to
reach. (Local calling will continue
with Bayfield as at present. On these
calls, dial 565-3000 and give the op-
erator the number you are calling).

When Hensall and many other communities switch to dial Sunday, the "voice with the friendly

about 1930, shows the exchange when it was still in the Scott grocery store. From the left are:
