The charter was draped in memory of the late Mrs. Lau- rene McKenzie. Plans were laid and com- mittees appointed to canvass the village for the sale of pop- pies Saturday, November '7. The winner of the 50-50 draw for November was Mrs. Edna Hay of Zurich who received $23, the Auxiliary receiving the same amount. This will be a monthly draw. Door prize was won by Mrs. Ed Munn; guessing prize, Mrs. John Skea; mystery prize, Mrs. WM. Smale. For their Christmas meeting in December members will ex- change gifts. A social hour of bingo was enjoyed and lunch served, Mr, & Mrs. Mansel Fowler of Goderich were weekend guests with Mr. & Mrs. J. E. McE wen. Mr. Fred Beer and Mr. Harry Horton attended the Canadian Corps Cyclist Battalion reunion at the King Edward Hotel, Tor- onto, Saturday, Nov. 7. Mrs. Emmerson Kyle, Kip- pen, aunt of Bonnie, was hostess at her home Monday evening, Nov. 9 when relatives and friends gathered to honor her with a miscellaneous shower. Mrs. Clarence Ducharme, Zurich, entertained friends of Miss Kyle at her home Wednes- day evening, Nov, 11, who pre- sented her with a miscellaneous shower of gifts. Promoted Air Division Headquarters at Metz, France, has announced the promotion of Sergeant D. A. (Donald) Orr, 30, to the rank of flight sergeant effective Oct. 1. The son of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Orr, Hensall, F/S Orr is a telegraph technician on the staff of 601 Squadron which provides communications to link all units of Canada's NATO Air Division. He served overseas previously .from 1957 to 1959 and while in Germany met the former Mar- garete Mader of Trier whom he married. Mr. & Mrs. Murray, Toronto, were weekend guests with Mr. & Mrs. Orval Rapson. Mrs. Carl Payne is in London for two weeks attending an in- stitute for nurses in maternal health teaching. Mrs. Harold Hansen of Strat- ford has returned after spending a week with her mother Mrs. Violet Schwalm and her brother Ray. Mrs. Schwalm, who has been in poor health for the past few weeks, is improving. Mr. Hansen was a visitor at the S c h w aim residence for the weekend, his wife returning home with him, Mrs. Keith Lindsay, Pamela, Sheila and Kevin of Willowdale spent the weekend with her parents Mr. & Mrs. John Hen- derson, Jack, Sylvia and Kathie. Mr. Lindsay is on a hunting trip. Miss Dorothy Parker of Lon- don spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Harold Parker and Patsy. Miss Patsy Jones, an em- ployee of the local Bell Tele- phone for the past five years, was presented with a gift by the members of the staff. Miss Jones has accepted a position BELL Built. managed and owned by Canadians Mrs. Pearl Shaddick, Hen- sail, who has served as an operator for 29 years will re- tire when the cut over to dial comes into effect here at 2 am November 15. Mrs. Shaddick started her career as an operator at Clinton under the late Mrs. ClaraRum- ball, manager, and Miss Lily Kennedy, chief operator. For 15 years she has been night operator in Hensall and has giVen very efficient service during that period. She was never too busy to give the correct time and hockey scores. She recalls as night operator the big snow storm which held up the Huron and Bruce train for a week when passengers had to stay at the farm home of Mr. James Mustard and the late Mrs. Mustard of Kippen, She also recalls the $50,000 disastrous fire in Hensall when a block of buildings on main street adjacent to the town hall including Twitchell's garage, Weber's shoe store and other stores and apartment buildings. Occupants of the apartments, who were crippled, had to be carried out of their homes by firemen. The block was com- pletely destroyed. Hensall personals Two church units study foreign lands UCW unit 4 meeting was held Thursday with Mrs. E. T. Rowe and Mrs. Wilbert pilling in charge. Mrs. Rowe was in the chair. The worship service was in charge of Mrs. James McAllis- ter, using the theme "Envy". She was assisted by Mrs. Jarris Horton giving a vivid descrip- tion of what envy can do. As a special musical number re- corded vocal music from Trini- dad and Brazil was enjoyed. The mission study on Brazil was presented by a panel in- cluding Mrs. Elgin Rowcliffe, Mrs. Ernest Chipchase, Mrs. Leona Parke, with Mrs. Rowe as 1 e ad e r. They noted that "Most Canadians know less about Latin America than about any other part of the world; and Brazil is the largest country in Latin America, with four times as large a population as Canada. It has been a mission field for several centuries, several of our missionaries are at work there. Half of the people can neither read nor write; Brazil is a nation in search of its soul." Mrs. Rowe gave cour- tesy remarks. Mrs. James McAllister pre- sided for the business and read a thank you note from Mrs. Edith McLellan of Five Oaks, near Paris, acknowledging the gift sent her. The semi-annual bale will be packed Tuesday, November 17, clothing to be left in the church before that date. Special project "Our Christmas Stock- ing" is to be in at the December meeting.
