She was un- able to be present because of illness and Mrs, Arthur Rundle (Alma Harding) read the report. A delicious smorgasbord was served at 5 o'clock and although the rain chased everyone into the school and lunch was some- what disrupted, it certainly did not dampen the spirits of any of the crowd and the chit chat and renewing of old acquain- tances went on uninterrupted. Many old school pictures were on display and caused a great deal of interest and amusement. Some of the former teachers who attended were Mrs. Warren Clark (Lena Davis), Mrs. Frank Porter (Lulu Hunter) of Lind- say, Mrs. Rd. Smihert (Ivair MacIntyre) fide r ton, Miss Elaine Mitchell of London, Mrs. Emil Becker of Dashwood, Bur- ton Morgan, St. Marys and Mrs. L. He was ably assisted by Mrs. Ceiia Thomson as secre- tary and several fine commit- tees all of which did their job well. The Food Committee es- pecially were congratulated and thanked as they were kept on the move all afternoon trying to forecast the weather and dodge the rain drops. Many memories turned back on August 1 as the old school bell at SS #4 Usborne (Eden) rang forth at 1 o'clock to call the pupils, ex-pupils, teachers, etc., to a very enjoyable re- union. The honor of ringing the bell went to Mrs. Warren Clark (Miss Lena Davis) of Dunnville, a former beloved teacher who taught there for 10 consecutive years, 1919-1929, and drilled the readin', writin' and 'rith- metic into many a reluctant scholar's head. A total of 327 people regis- tered during the afternoon along with seven former teachers of the 25 still living as well as W. R. Goulding, London, a for- mer music teacher for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Elgin Amy (the former Eileen Cave) of Con- quest, Sask. and Fred Webber and daughter Gladys of Path- low, Sask. were among the ones coming the greatest distance. Mrs. Amy commented that the invitation was just the ex- cuse they needed for atrip East and the Westerners seemed to enjoy the day to the fullest and made it so much more in- teresting for the home folk too. Alfred Coates, 82, Exeter, enjoyed the distinction of being the oldest former pupil attend- ing while Mrs. Robert Wiggins (the former Blanche Rook) of Windsor ran him a close sec- ond. She attended along with her sister Lettie, Mrs. W. Carr, Detroit, and Mrs. Carr's son and daughter-in-law. Many other old families also were represented by name s such as Skinner, Hunter, Mc- Curdy, Buswell, Luxton, Hicks, Davis, Harding, Westcott, K erslake, Ford, May, Pincombe etc, etc, etc. Allan Hodgert, young son of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Hodgert (Kathleen May) won the prize of $1,00 for the youngest baby there. This prize was donated by Mrs. Bella (Davis) Penrice of Holland, Manitoba, a former Eden pupil, Mrs. Penrice was unable to attend but sent her best wishes in a very interest- ing newsy letter. Many letters and greetings were received from former pu- pils and teachers who were unable, but no doubt longing, to be there. Several of these were read to the gathering. Garnet Hicks, well known neighbor from SS #5 was genial MC for the afternoon and said he figured he sort of ',belong- ed" there as it was to that com- munity that his grandparents landed from England many years ago. Earl Heywood and his wife, Martha, popular entertainers from C.K.N.X. Wingham pleas- ed the crowd with their singing, music, magic acts etc. etc. Earl is a former local boy too and was also borrowed from the neighbour SS #5. Mrs. J. M.
