Village of Crediton Garbage Collection on Sat., May 30 REGISTRATION FOR GRADE ONE IN SEPTEMBER Will Be Held In Mount Carmel School June 2 From 1 to 3 p.m. By MRS. J. H. PATON. OLANDEBOYE. Wednesday night, May 20 was grandmothers' night at the Cre- diton WI. To make the evening seem even more authentic the rios- tesses, dressed in pioneer cos- tumes, took their audience, in imagination, back to the scene of a pioneer mat-hooking bee. The skit, written by Mrs. Rus- sell King, took the form of a conversation around the mat, which was being hooked for a young lady about to be married. The general conversation was interspersed with many bits of advice, recipes for such things as how to do the washing using the great outdoors for the laun- dry room complete with open kettle, fire and scrub board, or how to brew a spring tonic from wild herbs and any pearls of wisdom a group of ladies could offer a young bride-to- be. The young lady in her turn hadprepared some entertain- ment for her guests which in- cluded a poem by Mrs. C. Kenney, three dances by a set of junior square dancers who were directed by Bob Lambie of Hensall, an accordion solo by Judy Smith, a piano solo by Barbara Attfield and a vocal solo by Doreen Kenney who was accompanied on the guitar by Caroline Glanville. The motto "The fellow who is busy rowing has no time to rock the boat" was taken by Mrs. Ena Reid. Gifts were presented to the oldest grandmother present who was Mrs. Alvin Baker and the youngest grandmother, Mrs. A. Mathers. Past-president Mrs. Earl Neil received one of the new WI cups and saucers in recog- nition of her service as presi- dent. Hostesses were Mrs. A. Att- field, Mrs. Russell King, Mrs. A. Smith, Mrs. C. Kenney, Mrs. R. Reid and Mrs. L. Hill. GOOD COACH While the boys practiced hard for the honors, some of the credit must undoubtedly go to their coach, F/O John Ruckpaul, who has supervised them since the competition was inaugur- ated. Last year F/O Ruckpaul won for himself the Queen's Medal, which is emblematic of a cham- pion rifle shot in the RCAF. Only six other people in the RCAF have won this coveted award. Other members of the team besides the top four finishers are: Jack Viau, Bill Burridge, Tony Leversedge, Ken Zink, Terry Quinn and Richard Boul- ton. Tires? The average is 35,000 miles to a set. Trode•in? The average is better than overage because Old Faithful never goes out of fashion. There's one more thing we should tell you. The average Canadian doesn't buy a Volkswagen. But then who wants to be overage? owners across Canada. The results ore above. (You can double check our average simply by adding the figures together and dividing by 144.) So much for gas. How about oil? The average is 1500 miles without adding a drop. We've always claimed that the Volkswagen 1200 gets 38 miles to a gallon of regular gas. But sticking to our figure hasn't been easy. Some customers soy they get 45 mpg, Others report in the low thirties, (It seems to depend on how and where they drive.) So we decided to settle the question once and for all. We sent questionnaires to VW Mr. & Mrs. Gordon Davis, London, Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Godbolt, Brussels, Mrs. Olivia Hodgins and Mrs. Richard Dickins, Exeter, with Mr. & Mrs. Heber Davis. Mr. & Mrs. Cleve Pullman and boys with Mr. & Mrs. Bill Johnson. Sunday Wilfred McAdam, Ailsa Craig was a guest with Mr. & Mrs. Tom Rees. HUNTER DUVAR LTD., TEL: 235-1100 BRIDE-ELECT FETED Friday . evening the congre- gation of St. Patrick's church, and community held a miscel- laneous shower for Miss Phyllis Weiberg, bride-elect of early June. Mrs. Kooy called the party to order for a short program consisting of readings by Mrs. Alton Isaac, Centralia, Mrs. Harvey Hodgins, Brinsley, duet by Sheila and Wendy Elston and a solo by Heather Davis. Mrs. Hugh Davis played "The Wedding March," as Janet Blair and Mildred Weiberg escorted the bride-to-be to a decorated seat on the platform. She was assisted in opening the many gifts by her escorts. Mrs. Kooy read the address. Sharon Davis and Heather Davis carried the gifts to the platform. Phyllis thanked all for the gifts and invited everyone to her trous- seau tea Saturday May 31.
