Phone 209.11 Three mobile pea viners ar- rived at Canadian Canners Limited this week and will be used in harvesting some of this year's crop,. Manefactered by the Food Machinery Corporation, Col- 111111311e, Ole, the machines will not be used to handle any par- ticular increased acreage, but to replace existing vines sta- tions, according to Ray Creech, manager of the local plant. "They will be a means of re- ducing the cost of threshing peas," he stated. The machines have a capacity of approximately half an acre of peas per hour and they will each do the equivalent of roughly two viners. This means the machines will probably replace six present viners. The intricate piece of ma- chinery is hauled behind a. trace ter and the pickup for the viners is driven by the power-take-off from the tractor. The balance of the machine is run by a separate power unit mounted on it, After the peas are threshed ,ifeWeiMeeMetif.;ei i 44! i 444! i 4! i i 1141144 i t iii 040/440000,41000! i 100000401i0000414011 041 i t ii 4444 ii 4414414 Bumper To Bumper ANNOUNCEM FARMERS We are very happy to announce that we are now appointed deal- ers for Minneapolis Moline Be sure to come in and see the completely new in design line of TRACTORS and also learn about the many new implements for the M.M. line this year. 'These hoppers hold about 1,- 500 pounds Pi peals and When full, are dumped into standard hppper trucks and then brought to the factory for processing. Meanwhile, the straw is dis- charged from the rear end of the vines and falls on the ground to be worked in at a later date as green manure, The local manager stated it was expected the machines. would be operated entirely by the lone man on the tractor. Mr. Creech also explained the conventional viners would still be used for the heavy end of the harvest, CONTRACTS COMPLETE At the present time, thelocal branch will be planning to pro- cess peas, carrots, sweet corn, and diced carrots this season. Contracting for all acreages has been completed and there has. been a slight increase in all the above mentioned crops. Mr. Creech reported about 50% of the pea crop has been planted to date, and the first planting of corn commenced on Monday, The plantings supervised by the firm are staggered so the crops will not require harvest- ing at the same time, but rather over a spaced period. There will be no new build- ings constructed this year, stated Mr. Creech, but there will be some line changes in the plant to handle the increased acreage. The plant is expected to start operation on approximately July 1 and an advertisement seeking employees appears elsewhere in the paper, NEW FIELDMAN While reporting on the coming season, Mr. Creech also an- nounced that Ted Wright has been hired as a fieldman by Canadian Canners to work in this area. A member of Exeter council, he has been employed at the A & H Superior Food Market for the past few years. Previous to that he was employed by the local canning firm. assembled and will be ready for work on this year's pea harvest. --T-A photo The three portable pea viners are shown above as they arrived in Exeter on a railway flat-car.
