GRAND BEND
A young doe escaping from
dogs took to the Ausable River
for protection here Thursday,
and managed to elude her tor-
mentors. However, she tired in
the current and found she was
unable to make her way up the
steep and muddy banks.
Jim Turnbull and' Robbie
West, playing along the river,
saw the young deer's difficul-
ties. At the home of Harold
Klopp, his son Charles fashion-
ed a noose from a piece of
clothesline, dropped it over the
boat dock side, and looped it
over the deer's head as she
floated under the dock. The rope
became secure around the ani-
mal's stomach and he pulled
her in to shore.
Called home to assist, Mr.
Klopp phoned OPP constable
Ray Gilleno, who in turn con-
tacted Conservation Officer Gar
Myers stationed at the Pinery
Park, and he with another man
from the Port Franks area
came to the scene. They report
that the animal was dying of
exposure and exhaustion when
they arrived to look after it.

Following group games Mary
Jane was seated beneath an
umbrella in a rose studded
arbor and presented with many
useful gifts for which she gra-
ciously thanked all.
Exeter curlers promoted
their retiring president, Bill
Lamport, to a throne Wednes-
day night.
And they placed his wife be-
side him, on the premise that
behind every successful leader
there's a hard-working wife.
Mr. and Mrs. Lamport were
crowned king and queen at the
club's annual banquet following
a vote to choose the man and
woman who have contributed
most to the club.
The winners were piped to
broom-and-plaid decor at-
ed thrones by Gerald Wurm and
Lawrence Marks of the Legion
band, where past president Hen-
derson King crowned them with
plaid curling hats.
Mrs. Lamport was the most
surprised. She'd brought her
camera to photograph the win-
ners. "How am I going to take
my own picture?" she exclaim-
ed.
Social convenors Mrs. Lee
Webber and Wallace Seldon pre-
sented the couple with a curling
award on behalf of the club.
Some 240 curlers attended
the annual banquet, at which
trophies were formally pre-
sented to club and draw cham-
