Satisfactions are few and far between in
this world of automation. One important item
that heads 'the list is that of being able to help
others,
Helping a person over the bumpy roads
of life has a two-fold reward, First it helps the
individual who needs it, and secondly, it makes
life more worthwhile and gives a sense of
achievement to the person who gives aid. This is
what keeps our minor hockey coaches, the art
director, the square dance teacher and the bowl-
ing instructors coming back year after year,
This week no one can be any prouder of
achievement with youngsters than Exeter Minor
Bowling League instructors. Three of our minor
teams participated in the Lake Huron Zone Rec-
reation Councils' annual 5-pin bowling finals at
Listowel over the weekend.
All three teams won championship honors
in their respective divisions, Barb Skinner and
Barry Greenacre also won individ-
ual awards in the competition with
Western Ontario's best minor
league bowlers from Durham,
Walkerton, Goderich, Owen Sound
and Listowel participating.
If it had not been for the
capable instruction offered by head
instructress Ruth Durand and Mary
Holtzman, Who have given up
many personal hours of free time,
RUTH DURAND this would not have happened. Not
only did these teams win the tournament, but I
was personally proud of the way they conducted
themselves. They were a real credit to our com-
munity.
Undoubtedly the instructors were happy
to hear about the results. And they should be toot
Of course these two ladies are not the only two
who help with the 200 or more youngsters reg-
istered in the local minor bowling setup, but they
are the only qualified instructors. Also on the
"free-staff" basis are treasurer, Isa Campbell; sec-
retaries, Lois Snell and Agnes Appleton, and
scorekeepers Pauline Brintnell, Grace Farquhar
and numerous other mothers who drop in period-
ically to help out with the scoring of games. Con-
gratulations to you ail on a job well done.
The minor bowling league will hold its
banquet Monday, April 20, at 6:30 p.m. at Exeter
Legion Hall. All bowlers who participated in the
league during the winter are invited to attend.
Also any mothers who could come out and help
serve hot-dogs to the youngsters would certainly
be welcome.
Awards won throughout the year will be
presented to teams and individuals to wind up a
successful 30-week program.

are well on their way to the pro-
vincial finals.
Comhines polished off Forest
Lakesides by 9-6 and 5-4 counts
in the first two games of the
best-of-seven OHA Ontario
semi-final playoff.
Due to an OHA ruling, Com-
bines have been alio w e d to
strengthen their already power-
ful club with four more players.
Three of these new players par-
ticipated in the L-I-F ores t
opener in Lucan Friday night
and two figured in the scoring
of three goals.
Jack Mcllwain, Ken Doig and
goaltender Gar Baker of Sea-
forth Beavers have been added
to the Combines for assurance.
The fourth player has not been
named to the roster.
Ryan's our hotshot
Ronny Ryan 5, Forest Lake-
sides 4.
That's the story in a nutshell
as L-I chalked up their second
victory in the OHA semi-finals
in Forest Monday night.
Although the ice machine
broke down in the afternoon
and the ice was extremely heavy
throughout the game, it didn't
have any bearing on Ryan's
superman showing.
The ex-5t. Marys Junior "B"
hockey star scored three of his
goals over the three periods of
regulation time. The crafty cen-
tre then added his fourth in the
first overtime session only to
have Forest tie up the game on
Tussy Dunham's late goal,
In the second overtime ses-
sion, while everyone else was
trying to shake off the heavy
going, Ryan drilled his fifth
counter past goaltender Ron
Urry for the winner. The mark-
er came with two and one-half
minutes to go in the second
overtime period.
Starring for the Lakesides
was Stan Ulrich with two goals.
Bob McCaig beat Keith Scar-
borough for another mid-way
through the second period.
Whip Lakesides
Combines whipped Forest 9-6
in the opener at Lucan Friday
night.
Tom Collings, rapidly re-
turning to form after a recent
shoulder injury, directed the
L-I attack with three important
goals.
Newcomer Jack Mcllwain of

his initial debut in an L-I uni-

WINNERS NEVER BEHIND
Oldtimers took a 2-0 first
period lead, let the bankers
tie the score, then went on to
basket the apples.
With a 4-3 lead late in the
third and the money-lenders
pressing for the equalizer, Gar
Johnston broke down the left
boards to let a sizzler go that
caught the lower left hand cor-
ner for the clincher at 16:31.
Earlier in the game, Jim
"Red" Loader, always a fa-
vorite with the three to five
fans at every game, scored the
nicest goal with a 25-footer
from the right side in the open-
ing period.
Nick Sologubov netted three
other lucky goals for the Old-
timers. •
Lloyd Moore, Peter McFalls
and Stan Hierons were the ban-
kers' marksmen. The trio were
the best men on the ice for the
losers.
You've got nothing on us!
Champions of the "Junior Girls" division also came from
Exeter.' Pictured above are, back row, left to right; Gail Shipman,
Barb Skinner and Penny Preszcator; front row, Roberta Gras-
sick, Joan Campbell and Sue Ann Lindenfield.
Exeter oldtimes are the win-
ners of the Graham & Graham
(Stanley Cup) Trophy!
Oldtimers registered a nip-
'n-tuck 5-3 victory over Bank-
ers at RCAF Centralia Thurs-
day evening to win the league's
best-of-three final series, two
games to one.
The newly reinforced trophy,
which weighs 25 pounds, will be
up for annual grabs in the men's
recreational hockey league.
A bedlam of excitement filled
the oldtimers' dressing room
following the game. It wasn't
over the win but how the club
would get the monstrous award
back to Exeter. Reports had it
that Jim MacDonald, who had
Graham & Graham donate the
mug, hir ed Guenther-Tuckey
Transports to bring it to Cen-
tralia.,
However, as Manager Cla-
rence Boyle and Coach Lloyd
"Toe" Greenacre pondered the
problem, the rest of the team
celebrated.
"It was lucky the Bankers
didn't have more than nine play-
ers out for this game", exu-
berated "Homer" Stringer.
"Nine players? You're
dreaming, Homer," snorted a
tired Jack Fulcher. "When I
was out there it looked like
12!"
"Oh, that's because you were
checking your own men, Jack,"
hilarious Al Flynn quipped.
"There was nothing to it,"
said Coach Greenacre. "I knew
we'd win it all!"
"Me, too," Boyle hollered. "I
knew if we had the game at
Centralia they'd lose. The kids
can't stand long road trips like
we veterans!"
P'Wees battle to final set
ed one apiece.
Cal Adams was a two-goal
man for Forest. Teammates
Tussy Dunham, Jerry Cough-
lin, Paul Crawley and Bob Dun-
lop chipped in with singles.
• The Lakesides held a 1-0
first period lead on veteran
Tussy Dunham's goal at the 12
second mark. However, Com-
bines took over a 6-5 lead by
the end of the second period
as 10 goals were scored in a
wide open twenty minute exhi-
bition of hockey.
Combines sewed up the series
opener by outscoring the Lake-
sides 3-1 in the final period.
Strangley enough, only eight
penalties were called through-
out the game. Each club was
assessed four.
Take championship
It's been a long haul for
Lucan-Ilderton Combines since
October, but they finally realiz-
ed their goal Wednesday night
when they won the Big Nine
"B" group championship.
L-I whipped Elmira Polar
Kings 5-3 in Lucan to win the
best-of-seven series four
games to one.
Free-wheeling "Du sty" Al-
dis scored two unassisted goals
for the Big Nine champions.

Terry Hodgins and Doug Gal-

with Jimmy Guenther.
Dentin Gaiser flipped a short
pass out to Bruce Fulcher who
worked his way down the left
boards to set up Riddell's sec-
ond goal of the game. As Ful-
cher drew a lone defender to
his side of the rink, he slid a
perfect pass over to Riddell.
Earlier in the game, Larry
Haugh rammed home a loose
puck at 2:50 of the first period
to net the game's tying goal.
Ron Janke and Riddell assisted
on the play.
Dentin Gaiser picked the
short side after taking hard-
working Randy Parsons' clear-
ing pass from just inside the
blueline. The marker was Ex-
eter's lead goal and eventual
game winner. Bantams bow 6-5
The Ingersoll club displayed
excellent defensive play
throughout the contest. This,
coupled with size, was too much
for the Exeter club.
Netminder Mike McLaughlin
turned in a stellar performance
to keep the score as close as
it was. The young goaltender
was shaken up midway through
the game when hit on the face
mask with the puck, but con-
tinued his steady play until the
end of the contest.
"I'm not sorry we lost,"
said Manager Lyle Riddell after
the game. "The team we played
was very good. Our boys did
very well. I'm proud of them!"
This summed up the general
feeling of all the Exeter fans
who attended the sudden-death
affair. The Exeter club did have
scoring opportunities but Inger-
soll had a better polished ma-
chine,
David Bermon beat McLaugh-
lin for Ingersoll's initial mark-
er at 5:45 of the first period.
Bob Skelton netted the clinch-
er at 5:35 of the second period.
Young Wayne Chalkey assisted
on both goals.
Exeter pee wees turned in a
gallant display at Goderich's
Young Canada tournament last
week to advance to the "B"
group before being eliminated.
The local club, under Coach
Lorne Haugh and Manager Lyle
Riddell, whipped Fergus, El-
mira and Streetsville in their
championship bid before bow-
ing to a superior Ingersoll club
2-0 Saturday night in a sudden-
death encounter.
Exeter Captain Bruce Ful-
cher received the IOOF 62 God-
erich trophy, for runners-up
in the "B" classification from
Noble Grand, Gordon Orr.

Third club loses
to Stoneybrook
Exeter Squirts were foiled in
their attempt to capture the
Shamrock league championship
when Stoneybrook held the local
squad to a 3-3 overtime tie
Sunday afternoon in Strathroy.
Stoneybrook won the best-of-
three point series with one win
and two ties.
The defeat marked the third
team in Exeter this winter to
be eliminated by Stoneybrook
in the Shamrock finals. Earlier,
the local pee wees and midgets
bowed to Stoneybrook.
Larry Davies scored two of
the Exeter goals. Brad Klumpp
added the other.
Tom Prentice was a two-goal
man for the winners. Scott Mit-
chell netted the tying goal.
WHIP STREETSVILLE
Exeter advanced into the fi-
nals by whipping Streetsville
4-1 in a Saturday morning game.
Although Streetsville's David
Lyons scored the game's first
goal at 1:27 for a temporary
lead, it was all Exeter most of
the way.
Chris Riddell, big payoff man
for the locals throughout the
season, led the attack with two
goals. Riddell's first came at
5:10 of the second period on a
beautiful two-way passing play
morning game but fought back
to gain credit for a 3-3 tie
by the end of regulation time.
Brian Peddigrew scored both
first period goals for Hespeler.
Graham Hern netted Exeter's
first marker on a play with Pete
Lawson and Billy Fairbairn.
Defenceman David Burke drill-
ed a pass from Lawson into the
net for the locals' second count-
er.
With the score tied 2-2 en-
tering the final period, Exeter
surged ahead at the 9:47 mark.
This time it was Lawson who
found the range with Jimmy
Hayter assisting on the play.
The local lads hung on grimly

Exeter Legion Bantams bow-
ed out of theGeorgetownhockey

short end of a 6-5 game against
Hespeler.
The two clubs battled to a
3-3 tie in the first game of the
two-game goals-to-count ser-
ies in the morning.
In the afternoon contest, the
teams battled all the way.
Everyone in the Georgetown
rink cheered the Exeter club
on, but the locals just couldn't
break through for the series
equalizer.
LAWSON NETS TWO
Pete Lawson scored two Ex-
eter goals in the afternoon
game, one of which came at
3:37 of the final period to move
the locals to within one goal of
Hespeler.
Pint-sized Barry Baynharn,
John Loader and Graham Hern
tallied the others.
Dennis Crawford put the main

assisted on two others. Stephen
