Last week's edition of The T-A carried. some impressive news „concerned. with the build- ing of a new Exeter swimming pool, A number of peop le have asked us about making donations and whet advantage such a pool in Exeter would have for the district. First, I would like to pass on the informa- tion that if you have a donation ready for this most worthwhile project and you haven't been approached by a canvasser as yet, please contact co-chairman Mel Geiser, Gerry Webb, Ted Pooley or myself at the recreation, office. In the last two weeks of this drive, the committee will need all the funds it can get so please don't be backward about mailing or bringing it in, With such a large area to cover, possibly some will be missed by direct contact. We hope this is not the case, but if it does happen to you, please get in touch with one of the above mentioned. Secondly, the benefits of such a pool in Exeter are great. One of the main advantages for success in such a project lies in the fact that people from Usborne,. Hay, Stephen anal other townships will gain much satisfaction as the boys and girls along with the adults will be able to join in swimming classes each year.. And you know how important it is to be able to learn to swim in this day and age, The pool, although being built in Exeter, is definitely not for Exeter alone. It is for every- one throughout the area. Over previous swim- ming seasons, we have enjoyed having boys and girls in from surrounding townships to take swimming lessons. And, beyond all doubt, we sincerely want this friendly relationship to con- tinue. strictly a Hespeler showing. John Rolland triggered a pair less than two minutes apart to give the visitors a 3-2 edge and they never looked 'lack. The Larry Woods, Dennis Crawford and David Weins line sparkled all night and it was Woods who scored a lone second period goal. Carrying a 4-2 lead into the third period, the distinctive passing machine from Hespeler added a pair of insurance goals midway through the final ses- sion. Crawford and Woods once again performed the scoring honors for Hespeler. The series opener was a rough one. Fifteen penalties in all were called by two Lon- don referees, who were very lenient at times. Nine of the penalties, one of which was a 10 minute mis- conduct to Peter Lawson, came during the final twenty minutes of play. Exeter Legion Bantams bow- ed 6-2 to Hespeler here Friday night to fall one game behind in their best-of-three OMHA semi-final series. Lucan Irish six and Mildmay Monarchs renewed a keen riv- alry of more than ten years when they met on Lucan ice Saturday night in an old timers contest which was part of Har- vey Langford night. The only difference that Fath- er Time seemed to make in the clubs was a few more pounds of weight and some shinier domes. The Monarchs were able to gain a bit of revenge for past losses by edging the Irish 4-3, mostly as the result of a fast start in the first period. Dave Wendt opened the scor- ing shortly after the first min- ute of play, tipping in a"Beam- er" Borho pass to give the visitors a quick lead. Art Hodgins and Ross Mc- Tavish combined a few minutes later, the latter netting the disc to even the score. GERRY SMITH'S tie on Exeter ice last week, wrapped up the best-of-three series two games to none, with one game tied. It was a heart-breaker to lose for the Exeter club who battled a strong Hespeler contingent right to the wire. Peace, by far the best man on the ice throughout the series, intercepted an Exeter clearing pass 10 feet in front of the net and backhanded the puck into the top left hand corner to climax a real nip-and-tuck battle. Goal- tender Mike McLaughlin had no chance on the play. Peace had given the visitors a 1-0 first period lead when he polished off a three-way play with David Bertollo and Ian Crawford at 11:55. Exeter surged back in the second for two goals and held a 2-1 lead going into the third and final period. Team captain Bruce Fulcher was j ohnny-on-the-spot for Exeter's initial goal of the game. He rammed home a cor- ner passout from Chris Riddell at 11:50 to draw the teamsback on even terms. Energetic Ron Janke also drew an assist on the goal. Persistent effort on the part of Larry Haugh set up Exeter's second goal of the game. The pint-sized centre won the draw on a corner face-off and slid the puck back to an uncovered Chris Riddell standing 15 feet out in front of the net, Riddell made no mistake when he dril- led a sizzler into the lower right hand corner. The two evenly matched clubs continually surged up and down the ice with some fine passing plays, only to be foiled by some excellent netminding at each end of the rink. Finally, at the 5:25 mark of the third period, Peace evened the count at 2-2 with his second goal of the night. Dave Bertollo helped on this play by working the puck loose from the side of the Exeter net. Peace's third goal at 19:59 of the third period was the heart-breaker as far as Exeter was concerned.
