The trouble came about when
the WOAA set the deadline of
Sunday, March 15, to declare
a series wiener. Walkerton
would not play the Exeter club
on either Friday, Saturday or
Sunday for various reasons. The
WOAA final put the clamp on
all proceedings by declaring
Exeter the winners.
Exeter had won its group
title and had advanced through
two rounds of play for the right
to enter the finals. Walkerton,
on the other hand, had just
finished declaring a group win-
ner after finally beating out

SHOW CLASS
The 1 o c al club displayed
plenty of class in this one as
they pemped home five first
period goals and never looked
back.
The two teams exchanged six
counters in the second period
but Exeter prominance began
to rule again as they outscored
Aylmer 4-1 in the final stanza.
Centre Larry Haugh paced
tile Exeter attack with three
goals and three assists.
Chris Riddell, playing one of
his best games of the season,
pumped home two goals and
assisted on three others. Ron
Janke also triggered a pair and
gathered three assists.
Jim Guenther, Captain Bruce
Fulcher and defenceman Dentin
Geiser shared the other Exeter
goals.
Although they didn't score any
goals, Joe O'Rourke and pint-
sized Johnny Guenther were
very instrumental in the victory
as they collected three and two
assists respectively.
Colin Monteith was Aylmer's
big gun with four goals. George
Lebel chipped in with two more,
Bob Tracey added a single.
Win opener 7-4
Exeter Pee Wees gained a
three goal margin in the first
game of their goals to count
series in Aylmer Friday with
a 7-4 victory.
It was a typical playoff game
with many crunching b o d y-

throughout.
Larry Haugh scored two goals
for Exeter. His first came on a
penalty shot midwaythrough the
first period. Haugh added his
second late in the third period
after Jim Guenther set up the
play.
Ron Jenke, Jim Guenther,

and John Guenther were the
other Exeter marksmen.

mark of the closing frame,
Don Milson and Ricky John-
son tallied for Northbrae and
Jim Hearn notched Lucan's sec-
ond tally, all in a space of two
minutes and 20 seconds late in
the period.
The extra ten-minute period
failed to produce a score and
the Lucanites were declared the
winners on the basis of shots
on goal in overtime.
Dennis Carty was the big
gun for Lucan in the morning
win over Ilderton, p u in ping
home three goals.
David Revington checked in
with a pair and Mike O'Neil
added a single.

by 'Torn Hodgins and Bobby
Evans.
TAKE EARLY LEAD
In the afternoon B play Strath-

Exeter scoring in the first min-
ute of play and went on to lead
3-1 at the first break.
Larry Haugh with a pair and

Although on the short end of
the final score the Exeter
youngsters were up in the shots
on the net department 30-17.
Jim Guenther and Ron Janke
found the range in the second
game loss to Woodstock.
Throughout the afternoon and
evening six team trophies and
three individual awards donated
back on even terms when Cush-

BIG SECOND PERIOD
Strathroy went ahead for the
second time in the game at 2:55
as Westgate flipped home a
rebound shot by Campbell.
However, from here on in,
it was strictly a Combine show.
Bobby Hoffman started things
rolling at 6:25 on a play with
Dennis Morrissey. Cushman
followed with his second goal of
the game at the even 13:00
minute mark. Cooper set up
Livermore for Hensall-

The two clubs battled to a
1-1 tie. Combines surged ahead
on the scoresheet 5-2 bythe end
of the second but a pair of quick
third period goals within the
first two minutes whittled the
advantage to only one goal.
Mike Cushman steered John
Cooper's rink-length shot into

the issue. Rockets had pulled

the move backfired.

However, play will resume this

The National Hockey League has its Jean
Beliyeau, GOrdie Howe and Bobby Hull. The
American and ',National baseball leagues have
their superstars ill Mickey Mantle, Al ICaline and
Sandy Koufax. These men highlight today's sports
Parade.
Many stars have come and gone through-
out the years in both baseball and hockey, As an
example, Enos "Country" Slaughter, hung up his
baseball spikes at the age of 42 after a long, suc-
cessful career. Maurice "Racket" Richard was the
big name in the hockey circuit until retirement.
Now that these stars have gone, their names are
seen in the record books. Many are quickly for-
gotten. Some are remembered longer than others.
Within our own community there's one
sportsman and gentleman whose name will not be
easily forgotten. He's Harvey Langford of Lucan,
Although Mr. Langford may not bestow a place
in professional big league record books, he has
certainly been a "big leaguer" to all Lucanites
over the past 35 years. In fact, his prominence
throughout the Lucan area has been more re-
warding from a personal aspect than that of the
professional stars.
HARVEY WILL BE HONORED
When one thinks of sport in Lucan, one
can't help but relate the name of Harvey Lang-
ford in his thoughts. If it hadn't been for Har-
vey's consistent efforts, sports may
have been a dead issue. Harvey
has always had his heart with the
boys. He wanted them to play in
various competitions a n d his
strong leadership over the years
has accomplished this.
I can't help but remember
Harvey last year when I played
hockey for the Combines: It al-
ways was Harvey who brought in pop for the
boys after the game, whether they won or lost.
It was always Harvey who put on the steak din-
ners out of his own pocket. A man of this calibre
is in a league by himself.
We're certainly pleased to see that the peo-
ple of Lucan will honor this man with a "Harvey
Langford Night" Saturday, March' 28. If anyone
deserves it, he certainly does. Part of his past
record includes: (a) serving with distinction in
world war one and being awarded the Military
Medal; (b) active in municipal affairs—reeve of
Lucan village for six years, councillor for 16
years and still serving; (c) warden of Middlesex
county in 1935; (d) member of the official board
of Lucan United Church.
One highlight of "Harvey Langford Night"
will take place on the ice surface at 7:30 when
he receives a number of gifts from various or-
ganizations and friends he has helped out in the
past.
As a special feature, an exhibition hockey
game has been arranged between the Lucan
Irish OHA Intermediate "C" champions of 1954,
and Mildmay Monarchs of that same year. The
Irish will be made up of Jake Barnes, Jim Free-
man, Bill Smith, Len Gaudette, Ed Rowett, Fred
Revington, Leroy Revington, Ross McTavish, Bob
Gallagher, Ken Kirkpatrick, Bill Hodgins, Don
McAlpine, Ray Yelle, Herb Stretton, Art Hod-
gins, Ivan Hearn, Jack and Norm Hardy and Ross
McRoberts. "Jiggs" Liesemer will direct the
Mildmay club.
Harvey, who is not one to boast, will un-
doubtedly be moved by all of this. I personally
feel that it couldn't happen to a nicer man and
wish him the very best of luck. I hope that all
of the people throughout the area will take time
out to wish Harvey the best on his night, be-
cause a "big leaguer" like this is undoubtedly in
a class all by himself.
CUFF CLEANERS — Don't forget the an-
nual Exeter Figure Skating Club show at the
arena this Saturday. Tickets may be purchased
at the door or from the skating club executive.
