Exeter Horticultural Society
is making a drive for more
members to qualify for official
recognition.
The society, partially formed
Monday night with 23 members,
needs another 37 interested
persons on its roster to meet
the minimum number required
for provincial government
grants.
"We think we can reach 60
without any trouble," says
newl y-elected president Jim
Paisley, the town works sup't.
"We know there are many in-
terested whom we haven't con-
tacted yet."
With 60 members, the so-
ciety qualifies for the $50 or-
ganizational grant provided by
a branch of the Ontario Dep't
of Agriculture, as well as the
501 per member donation from
the same source.
To further stimulate society
work, the government provides
an annual grant equal to one-
quarter of annual expenses, to
a maximum of $500.
Although grants have always
been available for horticultural
societies, the assistance has
been increased recently to en-
courage centennial programs in
this direction, Sup't Paisley
explained. The local society
hopes to make a contribution to-

fined to his home, but is im-
proving and will soon be able to
return to school.

Main St. UC, following the
trend toward greater laymen
interest 10 the chl1rPh, has
formed a men's club,
The group was launched Fri-
day night by 40 members of the
congregation following a dinner
in the church basement.
President pf the new or-
ganization is Fred Walters.
Other officers include Jim
Paisley, vice,president, and
Jim Archer, secretary-trea-
surer.
Directors are graham Ar-
thur and Fred Hatter. Presi-
dent Walters will be the re-
presentative to the preabytery.
During discussion of the or-
ganization, talks were given by
Rev. R. S. Hiltz, and the new
president and vice-president.
The ladies of the afternoon
unit, UCW, who served the din-
ner, indicated their support by
making a donation of $10.00 to
the club.
Meetings will be held the
fourth Monday of every month.
Interested men in the com-
munity have been invited to
attend.

OAC, Guelph.

boro Thursday evening to see
their cousin, the late Mrs. Har-
vey Wells.

USE EASTER PROGRAM
The UCW were entertained by
Miss Aggie Northgrave in the
village. The president Mrs. Pe-
ter Voisin, presided for the
meeting.
Devotional convener, Mrs.
David Nestle, presented the
Easter program with the study
on South Asia. Readings were
given by Mrs. Charles Coughlin
and Mrs. Wilmer Scott. Scrip-
ture lesson was read by Mrs.
Rea Neil.
Plans were laid to have the
annual ham supper on Thursday,
April 2 in the Sunday School
room 5-8 p.m.
The quilt for the bale is to
be quilted at the home of Mrs.
Arthur Simpson Thursday. Mrs.
Arthur Hodgins gave the trea-
surer's report which was good.
The hostess was assisted in
serving refreshments by Mrs.
Coughlin and Mrs. Simpson.

a tuberous begonia as a pre-
mium.
At Monday's meeting, four
members of the London society
and district director Clifford
Epps of Clinton outlined the
objectives and m ethod s of
operation of horticultural
groups. Slides were shown of
various projects.
Among the officers elected
Monday night are Bruce Perry,
vice-president; Mrs. Donald
Gravett, treasurer; Mrs. Pais-
ley and Miss Greta Harness,
auditors, and Don Gravett, di-
rector. More directors will be
elected at a later meeting.
Two members of the former
horticultural society here, C.
V. Pickard and Ernest Harvey,
were chosen honorary mem-
bers.
Membership cards soon will
be available at a number of
locations in town, including
Frayne's General Store, the
clerk's office, Fisher's Hard-
ware, Bill's Barber Shop, Hop-
per-Hockey, The Times-Advo-
cate and MacMillan's.
DESSERT EUCHRE - The la-
dies of St. Patrick's Church,
Saintsbury, are holding a St.
Patrick's dessert euchre and
bake sale on Wed. March 18 at
2 pm in the Parish Hall. Ad-
