They came back strong to defeat Clinton right in their own back yard in third and deciding game of their best-of-three series. The midgets are engaged in a series with Listowel and are one game down in their semi- final playoff. Exeter pee wees ',cake- walked" to their gropp title. They took the semi-final and final series in four straight games. The pee wees have moved into the WOAA semi-finals against Mt. Forest and hold a 1-0 edge in their best-of-three series. HSDHS junior girls' team wins conference championship Clinton ousts juvenile club Exeter pee wees took a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three WOAA semi-final series against Mt. Forest Tuesday night by scoring an impressive 9-4 victory on home ice, Second game of the series is slated for Mt. Forest this Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Exeter lads, showing more skating durability, chalk- ed up a 4-1 first period lead. The locals added three more second period markers and then split an even four goal third with Mt. Forest. Centre Larry Haugh andJohn Guenther potted two goals each for the winners. Haugh's two goals came in the first period while John Guenther scored once in each of the second and third periods. Other Exeter marksmen were Jimmy Guenther, Ron Janke, Bruce FulCher, Chris Riddell and Ron Lindenfield. Bruce Kuehl turned in the "hat-trick" for Mt. Forest. Al- lan Goldie scored the other goal. The victory gives Listowel the first game in the best-of- three WOAA semi-final series. Second game of the series was played Wednesday and if a third game is necessary, it will be played in Listowel on Friday night. Listowel put up an aggressive skating display in registering their 7-4 victory. They out- hustled the Exeter club for most of the way and made their chances count when they got around the Exeter net. The local Kinsmen club mis- sed many fine scoring opportu, nities as their shooting was very erratic. DAVIDSON SCORES Defenceman Craig Davidson scored Exeter's first goal of the night at 18;40 of the first period after Listowel's John Coglin and Ken Helmka had found the range. Exeter outscoredListowel 3-1 in the second period as they turned in their best effort of the night. Bantams win deciding game H-Z meets Glencoe after finishhing first nine and Iris Marshall added the other seven points. Listowel appeared stronger in the first half and led 12-9. However South Huron rallied to win this qualifying game. Annie Winhel dropped in 11 points for Listowel and Linda Hyners added eight and Karen Kaufman five. Hawks reach finals of IC Clinton Juveniles, under the direction of Doug Andrews, whipped Exeter juveniles 14-4 Saturday night to win the best- of-three group final in two straight games. Clinton took the series opener on home ice by a 12-2 count. The high-flying line of Borden McCrae, Laurie Colquhoun and John Cooper were the main thorn in the side of the Exeter club all night. They produced 10 of the winners' 14 goals. Centre John Cooper splurged for five. Laurie Colquhoun add- ed three more. Borden McCrae chipped in with two. Other Clinton marksmen in- cluded defenceman Doug Mc- Cauley with two, Bob Batkin and Otto Smale, one each. Larry Stire scored three goals for Exeter. Jim Pfaff added the other Exeter goal in the second period. Clinton ran up , a 5-2 first period lead. They outscored Exeter 7-1 in the second and wrapped up their decisive vic- tory with two more third period counters. Exeter Legion Bantams under "Red" Loader and Gord Bayn- ham wrapped up their WOAA Group One title in Exeter Wed- nesday night by downing Mit- chell 4-2 in a hard-fought game. The win gave Exeter the best- of-three series two games to one. The two clubs battled through a scoreless first period in which goaltending for both teams was superb. Exeter gained a 2-1 edge on the play by the end of the sec- ond period. From there, the local club outscored Mitchell 2-1 in the third to win the group honours, FOUR SHARE GOALS Exeter goals were shared by four different players. Centre Barry Baynham, wingmen John Loader and Gra- ham Hern and lanky defence- man David Burke were the Ex- eter snipers. It's like celebrating "Old Home Week" be- ing batk behind the keys of a typewriter once again. Although my typing speed has slowed down to practically a Walk, I hope I will be able to keep you up to date on the various happenings on the sport and recreation fronts, From my past experience as recreation di- rector in Exeter, I fully realize that many peo- ple throughout the area have many fine views on the various aspects pertaining to sports. I feel strongly that many people would like to read about them and should. So, if at any time I can be of service to you, or if you would like to write a guest sports column, please don't hesitate to ask. Since this is my first column since taking over the duties from or buddy Ross Haugh, I would like to wish him every success in bal- ancing the township books from now on! Serious- ly though, Ross, I hope I can fill your shoes on this job. I know it's going to be quite a chore. I wear size seven-yours are elevens. How about that? This is my first problem on the job! JUNIOR GIRLS ON THEIR WAY Determination! Drive! Desire! Call it what you like but this is what carried South Huron District High School's junior girls to the Huron- Perth basketball championship in Clinton last Saturday. South Huron won the championship but did it the hard way in two spine-tingling games. The local ladies were behind in both of their games against Listowel and Goderich with less than four minutes to play. With "don't give up" words of encouragement from the bench, the lo- cal gals went on to win. That little "extra" dis- played by our school team in the dying minutes is emblematicof . true and worthy champions. Congratulations on a job well done. May you have continued success at WOSSA in Wood- stock next Saturday. The WOSSA pennant would look good hanging on the school wall. THREE MINOR TEAMS IN RUNNING To Exeter's great satisfaction this week, three of their four minor hockey teams walked off with group championship honors. Local pee wees, bantams and midgets all kayoed Clinton en- tries in their respective divisions for the group titles. The only title run that was missed came in the juvenile division. Their bowing out was no disgrace. Clinton juveniles, last year's On- tario finalists, had too much polish for the local lads and undoubtedly will give many teams in the hunt for the OMHA honors a lot of trouble before it's all over. To Coach Lorne Haugh and Lyle Riddell of the pee wees; Coach Jim "Red" Loader and Gord Baynham of the bantams and to the Exeter Kinsmen sponsored midgets, congratulations for a job well done. May your success continue down the playoff trail so that an Ontario trophy may rest 'in Exeter before too long. BO 1962 CHEVY II BURTON TAKES OVER Centre Scott Burton came into his own by scoring at 15:16 of the 'second period and again at 7;45 of the third to give Exeter a 5-3 lead. Clinton cut the margin to 5-4 when Rodgers found the range at 12:04 but crafty centre Bob Storie nulified the goal with the game clincher at 17:37. The short-handed midgets turned in one of their best games of the season for the victory. 1963 CORVAIR DELUXE SEDAN Automatic transmission Back-up lights 14,000 actual miles New Car Condition MONZA SPORT COUPE Automatic transmission Custom radio, washers wheel discs, whitewall tires Drive This beauty. RCAF Centralia Golden Hawks are in the Eastern Cana- da Training Command playdown finals. The Golden Hawks whipped RCAF Clinton 9-3 in Centralia Saturday to capture their home- and-home goals-to-count ser- ies 14-6 on the round. The series victory marked the first time in four years that the Centralia club has eliminat- ed Clinton in the Eastern Canada semi-final round. A sudden-death Saturday night game will be played this weekend at RCAF Centraliabe- tween Centralia and St. Johns Newfoundland for the right to enter the Canadian finals to be held in Winnipeg. RCAF Centralia led all the way in this one. They ran up a 3-2 edge in play after the first 20-minutes of play, added two more unanswered goals in the second period, and outscored Clinton 4-1 in the final frame. Claude Audet, AlSimpson and Tom Harrison were all two goal men for Centralia. Andy Deragon, George Kelly and Joe MacDonell added the others. Besides his goal, Deragon was instrumental in setting up 'four other markers. South Huron junior girls' bas- ketball team captured the Hur- on-P e r the x championship in Clinton Saturdaywhen they de- feated Listowel 32-24 and God- erich 45-41. Four teams competing were Listowel, Goderich, S e af orth and South Huron which was un- defeated in five previous games. This victory enables the South Huron team to compete for the WOSSA championship in Wood- stock Saturday. In the final game,SouthIluron met Goderich who they knew would present some strong competition as they had played their first game against them. South Huron came from behind in the fourth to win by a narrow margin 45-41. Lynn Lesnick netted 18 points for South Huron. Her linemates Iris Marshall and Ann Mickle added 17 and 10 points respec- tively. A loss appeared near as South Huron trailed 29-21 at the end of the first half, Iris Marshall's 11 points in the second half help- ed South Huron to gain a gradual lead. Maureen Douds of Goderich again played an outstanding game. She netted 29 points. Ro- bin Sully added eight and Betty Stire four. In the semi-final, South Huron trounced Listowel 32-24. This was their first game against Listowel this season since each team played only five games and there are 10 teams in the league. Ann Mickle accounted for half of South Huron's points with a 16 total. Capture third game Exeter Kinsmen Midgets have won the WOAA Group One cham- pionship. Exeter whipped Clinton 6-4 right in their own backyard Wednesday evening to take the group final two games to one. As usual, the local club did it the hard way. Exeter spotted Clinton a 2-0 lead in the first period before they could untrack themselves. STRONG DEFENCE Ron Broderick, Craig David- son and Bryan Baynham played an exceptionally strong defen- sive game for Exeter. Baynham even took time out from his de- fensive chores to score Ex- eter's first goal of the game. With Clinton leading 2-1 in the dying stages of the first period, scrappy Jimmy Par- sons evened the count when he capitalized on a play with Glen Overholt and Ricky McDonald. Paul Mason put Exeter one up in the second on a play with Scott Burton, but Clinton came back 10 minutes later to tie the score. and lanky Mike Cushman each chipped in with a pair to bol- ster Combines' scoring attack. Single counters came off the sticks of Craig Chapman and Dale Turvey. Hensall-Zurich scored four goals in each of the first and third periods. In the second, the winners outscored their ri- vals 3-2. ROCKETS TOUGH The junior Rockets from Strathroy gave Combines a rougher test Thursday night at Strathroy. Rockets paired goals with the Hensall-Zurich club for two periods before giving in. Combines scored four third period goals within five minutes to wrap up their 26th victory of the campaign. Dennis Morrissey and Bob Livermore each scored a goal in the second and third periods to pace the Combines' offen- sive show. Mike Cushman and Craig Chapman scored one goal each in the third. Bruce Cooper and Craig Chapman scored earlier for the winners. Mac Westgate, one of thebet- ter juniors in the league, di- rected Strathroy with three goals. Dave Robinson and Harry Thomas were the other marks- men for Strathroy. Hensall-Zurich Combine s will tackle Glencoe in the first round of their O.H.A. Junior "D" group playoffs. Combines, winners of the lea- gue championship by a country mile over the rest of the pack, will battle it out with Glencoe in a best-of-seven series. Hensall-Zurich put its im- pressive record (26 wins, 3 losses, one tie) on the line when the team opened the series last night at home. Second game will move to Glencoe tonight (Thurs- day) with the third back inHen- sall Saturday. COULD BE TOUGH Let's not count Glencoe auto- matically out of the running de- spite Combines' brilliant show- ing in the past. Glencoe has given the Hensall-Zurich ag- gregation as many worries as any team. Combines suffered one of their three losses to the southwestern team and also played their only tie game of the season with them. Team manager George Beer is optimistic about the series. He feels Combines have an excellent chance but they'll have to buckle down and play hockey to win it. After all, as George says, "Anything can happen in the Glencoe rink!"
