Wading through the snow to

another day's hunt for meat for
my little family.
And where was George? At
that very moment, he was strol-
ling indolently down the hill in
Palma de Mallorca, on his way
to the bakeshop to buy some of
those crusty little rolls, hot
from the oven, and take them
back to the apartment where he
and Elda would sit on their
balcony, in their shorts, and
have breakfast, looking at that
same old monotonous scene--
the Mediterranean sparkling in
the sun,
And as I thought of this, I was
so overcome by pity for them
that I started to cry. At least,
I think that's what made me
commence weeping. At any rate,
Iwas still sobbing when I got
into the car and found it wouldn't
start,
Think of what they miss!
There's the happy family jaunt
to the Christmas tree lot, and
the delightful, democratic
choosing of the tree;
"That one's scraggly. This
one's bushy at the bottom but
skinny at the top. I like spruce.
No, we're getting a Scotch pine.
Too big. Too small. Too much
money,"
And who'd want to be in
Mallorca on Christmas Day?

SS PARTY •
Holy Trinity Sunday School
held its Christmas party in the
Parish Hall last Wednesday.
Mrs. Clarence Hardy accom-
panied the children in a sing-
song of Christmas songs and
carols. Then the smaller chil-
dren went downstairs for their
games and the older ones had
theirs in the parish hall.
Superintendent Wm. Lit tl e
has been transferred from the
Bank of Montreal here to Stir-
ling, so he was presented with a
gift by Miss Mary Mathers, one
of the teachers.
HAPPY REUNION
Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Birtch of
Lucan, parents of Mrs. Clayton
Abbott, arrived at Lynwood,
Cal. by train last Friday and will-
be living six doors from the
Abbotts. Mrs. Clara Abbott of
Centralia (formerly of Lucan),
who spends each winter in Cali-
fornia, is at. South L aguno
Beach. The Abbotts are planning
a get-together in the near fu-
ture.
The first Christmas program
staged by the teachers and pu-
pils of the new Biddulph Central
School was outstanding last
Tuesday evening.
The children had been given
a preview on Monday but even
with their remaining in their
classrooms the auditorium
would not accommodate the
number of parents who turned
out, so some had to be seated
in the hall. Ron Crozier, chair-
man of the trustee board, was
MC for the program.
Jr and sr mixed choirs and
boy and girl choirs were really
a credit to the music teacher,
Mrs. Clarence Hardy (Lucan)
and her accompanist, Gay 1 e
Mardlin (Gr. 7 pupil). The rhy-
thm band and "Frosty the Snow-
man" by Gr. 1 and 2 drew a big
hand of applause.
Grade 3 staged the Christmas
Story while grade 4 chose
"Christmas at G r and m a' s".
Grade 5 square danced in a
number "Biddulph Hoe-down".
An amusing take-off on the
visit of the trustees to the school
in "Official Visit" by grade 6
was enjoyed by all. Grade 7
chose a choral reading of "San-
ta went Modern" and grade 8 an
amusing play "Here Comes the
Bride" (with Irwin Gabel dres-
sed up as the bride.)
A recitation by Jane Crozier,
an accordian number by Brenda
Wallas, (with her brother at
the piano), and a mouth organ
selection by Roy Willis com-
pleted what one mother reported
was, "One of the very best
Christmas concerts I've ever
seen".
LUCAN SCHOOL NEWS
Inspector H. G. Schlotzhauer
visited the school Dec. 13, 16,
and 17.
Friday' morning, Dec. 20, at
a Hall Assembly all the children
joined in a Christmas carol
sing-song and in the afternoon
each room had their own pro-
grams.
The nurse reports there is
comparatively little sickness In
the school at present.

UWO Pakistani
At the Lions Club's dinner
meeting in the Anglican Church
basement last Monday evening,
Anees Fheikh of Pakistan, an
exchange student at the Univer-
sity of Western Ontario, was
the guest speaker.
He was introduced by the
program chairman, Kenneth
McNamee, and later thanked by
Alex Young.
Mr. Fheikh spoke of the cus-
toms and culture of Pakistan,
its struggle for independence
and its thirst for knowledge. He
intends to go back as a teacher.
Plans for the second bingo on
Wednesday Dec. 18 were dis-
cussed.
Mrs. Herman Young's group
of the Ladies Guild catered for
the dinner.
CGIT PARTY
The CGIT Christmas party
was held in the UC schoolroom
Friday Dec. 21, beginning with
a box lunch supper.
Marilyn Hearn, Nancy Park,
Norma Davis and Roberta Coch-
rane were in charge of recrea-
tion. Wendy Cronkite led in a
vesper service and Louise
Cochrane in a sing-song.
Following an exchange of gifts
the group was divided with Mar-
garet Such taking charge of the
north group and the leader, Mrs.
Murray, the south group as they
went carol singing to the homes
of "shut-ins" where they left a
small remembrance for each.
Former resident
given memorial
A memorial service was held
in Pickering High School for
teachers, students, friends and
the family of the late Richard
Sutton Hodgins, a former Lucan
resident. A government bond
was purchased from donations
from the staff, pupil s and
friends in the Pickering district
and the interest on the bond is
to be given each year as aprize
to the student with the highest
mark in grade 13 English.
A memorial plaque is to be
placed permanently in the
school with the students' name
inscribed thereon each year.
Urge caution
for holidays
Trees and toys, two delights
for children at Christmas, can
be turned into hazards through
thoughtlessness and careless-
ness on the part of the parents,
warns the National Safety
League of Canada. Parents,
over-anxious to please the kid-
dies, too frequently overlook
the dangers they create.
The league advises special
care in decorating and lighting
the Christmas tree so the happy
holiday will not turn into a time
of tragedy.
"Use lighting sets approved
by the Canadian Standards As-
sociation (CSA)," said P. G.
McLaren, general manager of
NSL. "Check old sets for frayed
or bare wires, always discon-
nect the lights before retiring
or leaving the house, Keep com-
bustible decorations away from
lights, candles, fireplaces, te-
levision sets, radiators."
The wise toy buyer, said NSL,
will avoid toys with sharp or
pointed edges. He will also avoid
toys small enough to be swal-
lowed or too large for the young-
sters to handle. "Match toys to
the child's age and abilities,"
said Mr. McLaren.
"Extra care," he said, "can
mean extra fun and happiness
at Christmas."

William Little, an employee
at the Lucan Montreal Bank, has
been transferred to the Stirling
branch as an accountant.
Though only in Lucan for the
past three years he has been
very active in various organiza-
tions.
He is going to be greatly
missed in Holy Trinity Church,
for he was superintendent of the
Sunday School and a most regu-
lar and faithful choir member.
In the Lions Club he was
second vice-president and as-
sistant secretary-treasurer.
He was interested in boys'
work and was secretary-trea-
surer of the Lucan Boy Scouts
Group committee. In sports he
was secretary-treasurer of the
Lucan-Ilderton Combines.
BANK PARTY
After banking hours last
Thursday the staff of the Bank
of Montreal met at the home of
the Manager, Jack Steacy, for
the annual Christmas party and
exchange of gifts.
This year there was a touch
of sadness for they were saying
"farewell" to William Little,
an employee for the past three
years. He was presented with
a TV table and lighter.
LUCAN LANES
The report cards went out
last Friday and Principal Jen-
kins was pleased at the number
of parents who, Monday evening,
availed themselves of the op-
portunity to consult with the
teachers as to the progress of
their children and how they
could best assist them to secure
better marks for the Easter
exams.
Rec news
By J. E. BURT
Boy! oh boy! good old St. Nick
is making sure that we are going
to have a white Christmas, with
the weather man's help, that is.
But getting to the sports news,
last Wednesday night the Lions
club held a turkey bingo. There
weren't too many out as the
weather was very bad.
Now for the coming events:
Friday night the 27th of Dec.,
the Lucan Ilderton Combines
host the Goderich intermediates
at the Lucan Arena, game time
is 8:30 p.m. Come out and watch
your favourite player or players
go at the old game of shinny.
Sat. Dec. 28 starting at 8:00
a.m. sharp we have a mammoth
tournament at the arena, in ban-
tam age that is. We have 12
teams participating 4(D) class,
4(C) class and 4 in (B) class
running in that order. This goes
on till 10:00 p.m. with a break
from 12 to 1 and another break
from 6 to 7 p.m.
We would appreciate it if any
one could give us a hand with
this tournament. We need some
of the younger boys to keep the
ice cleaned between games.
Contact me if you are interested
in making a bit of spending
money.
I would like to take the op-
portunity at this time to wish
every one of you a merry
Christmas and a very, very
prosperous New Year.
