The Combines took the only contest of the week with away-from-home decisioe over Glencoe p.14.tors.$aturday night. The big game with second plooe strathroy Rockets stated for .Hensall Friday night was called off because of adverse weather conditions. The club Will see action twice over the upcoming week, end, They play host to the fast improving Port Huron young- sters Friday and travel to Wat- ford the following night. VETERANS, ROOKIE STAR A pair of veteran perform- ers provided the scoring spark and a rookie stood out dem- sively as the Combines downed Glencoe 5,2 for their ninth win in 10 starts, Steve Kyle and Bill .Shaddiek nabbed three points apiece and Rick Stade sparkled in the nets especially in the final period. With his club in the lead 4-2 with less than eight minutes to go in the game, stade came up with dazzling stops on two clean cut Glencoe breakaways to pre- serve the victory. Kyle scored the first goal of the game with the help of Shad- dick and they both assisted on Dennis Morrissey's counter, also in period number one. Kyle came back early in the second to pot what proved to be the winning counter, again with the assistance of Shaddick, Craig Chapman late in the second and Bob Livermore with time running out in the contest Flaying a good portion of his junior club Intact, Wright will- be using some of the Sallie stYles of Play etilizing several variations .o> a zone press de- fence. This will enable his club to make use of their height, especially in pass interception. Wright says MS club will be hampered by lack of speed and will stress defensive play. NEW JUNIOR COACH Doug Rickert is taking over the coaching reins of the junior club and is faced with practi- cally a complete squad of new- corners. The only experienced perfor.- roer will be holdover Bryan Baynham who will be operating from a forward position. Bill Farquhar and Bill Bea- vers have looked impressive in workouts at guard posts. Barry Mousseau, the tallest boy on the club at 6'2, will start at centre and Dale McAllister is the other starting forward. Charlie Keating, Tony Lever- sedge, DonWolfe, Phil Huntley, Han Zeehuisen, Dom Marchil- don, Bill Burridge and John Pryde are other members of the club. Since this is the first year for most of the youngsters, Rickert will probably use a zone defense style of play as his club picks up the fundamentals of the game, Schedule starts Jan. 8 Schedules have been released by officials in charge of the Huron-Perth High School Bas- ketball Conference. Entries are in from nine schools in junior and senior boys and girls divisions. In order to have a conference winner in time to advance to WOSSA playdowns the schedule has been cut to six games for each club. The top four teams in each boys' grouping will meet in a play-off tournament at Stratford Northwestern Feb. 29 to decide a winner to advance to WOSSA finals. A similar girls' tourney, em- bracing the first four clubs will be held in Clinton a week earlier Feb. 22, In the abbreviated schedule, clubs from HuronSouthDistrict High School will not be meeting Aldis leads L-I scorers A fine program of ice entertainment is De- ing lined up by the Exeter Minor Hockey Associa- tion for Boxing Day afternoon at the arena, In addition to watching the youngsters perform, fans will also see a couple of feature attractions. Opening the day, parents will have a chance to see 'their little fellows who ;avort in houSe league action every Saturday morning. At 12:30, kids seven and under will be showing their skills and will be followed 45 min- utes later by eight- and nine-year old squirts. At three the Exeter Greys, WOAA soft- ball champs, will trade their bats and gloves for brooms and tackle a group of "Teen Time" girls in a broom ball skirmish. Hockey or a version of it will wind up the afternoon activities at four. A bunch of hockey "has-beens" has been practicing every Thursday night in anticipation of a first official game. Known as the "Old Timers", Lloyd "Punch-y" Greenacre will lead his stars against the Bank Boys in an exhibition tilt. It is rumored that Greenacre will bring Elmer Schlotzhauer out of retirement for this important engagement. To offset this move, coach Dean "Prentice" McKnight of the monied men could be importing some help from the banks of the far north in Hensall. TOURNAMENTS ON TAP The holiday season brings its usual amount of sports tournaments, Two local minor hockey teams will be competing in Christmas week tourneys and the high school senior boys' basketball club will be getting into action January 4. The Exeter Pee Wees will be attempting to retain the Leamington Post and News trophy they captured a year ago. Their first game will be Boxing Day at 12:20 against Petrolia. A win in the opener would assure a game for the locals the following afternoon with either Forest or Dresden providing the opposition. The Bantam club will be in Riverside the same day in the Essex County town's annual event. The opening round of the Riverside tour- ney is a two-game total goal series. Exeter bantams will, be tackling the host club in double games, Thursday at one and Fri- day morning at ten. If successful in the first elimination round, the local youngsters will be pitted against either Byron or Watford in a sud- den-death game at four the same afternoon. George Wright's HSDHS senior basket- bailers are travelling to Woodstock, Saturday, January 4, to take part in that city's annual hoop tourney, meeting Wheable Collegiate of London and Woodstock in the first two contests. This Saturday, December 28, the annual Shamrock Bantam tournament will be staged at the Lucan Arena. CORRECTION PLEASE In last week's column in reporting Bill Wright's terrific bowling game at the Exeter Lanes, we made a couple of errors. On his last throw, Bill picked the two and three pins, rather than the head pin as reported. Same result. Also it was stated Bill's older broth- er Don threw a high game a year ago. This should have read, younger brother. Sorry, fel- lows. ODDS 'N ENDS Jim.
