HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Exeter Times-Advocate, 1963-12-19, Page 6The local lead was again
redeemed in a few minutes when
Broderick took a pass from
hard-Working Allan Thompson
to find the range and Jim Pfaff
fired the eventual winner to put
his mates In front 5-3.
A belated attack by the home
team that realized two late
tallies fell short and the Exeter
club was victorious by a single
goal.
Blank Lucan twice
Exeter"'s minor clubs took all
games of a Shamrock minor
tripleheader against Lucan
clubs at the local arena Wednes-
day.
The pee wees, opening the
night's festivities, downed their .
Irish opposition 8-2 and the
bantams and midgets won their
contest by the shutout route,
8-0 and 5-0 respectively.
RIDDELL, JANKE LEAD
The pee wee's eight-goal at-
tack was led by Chris Riddell
and Ron Janke with a pair to
their credits.
Randy Parsons, Marvin Bow-
er, Larry Haug and Bruce
Fulcher tallied singles to round
out the scoring.
HERN HEADS BANTAMS
Graham Hern spearheaded
the bantam attack with a hat
trick, scoring the first goal
after only one minute of play
and adding two in the middle
period.
Defenceman David Burke
along with forwards Bill Fair-
bairn, Jim Hayter and John
Loader tallied along with Hern
in the second to put the game
out of reach of the Lucan young-
sters.
The only scoring play of the
final session came on a passing
play that teamed up Murray
Obery and Ricky Weber with
the former netting the rubber.
TALBOT TALLIES
Five players scored single
goals in the 5-0 midget victory.
John Talbot was the leading
point getter with pair of assists.
LAWSON NETS WINNER
A breakaway by Pete Lawson
broke up a tight bantam con-
test. The big centre dented the
twine with less than three min-
utes to go.
Hard-working Bill Fairbairn
had tied the score with a neat
effort on a long pass from Ron
Durand early in the third after
Zurich were in front 2-1 with
one period to go.
Fairbairn counted his second,
an insurance tally, with about a
minute to go to wrap things up
for his mates.
A neat three-way passing pat-
tern set up the first Exeter
score. Winger Jim H ay t e r
finished off the play originated
by Fairbairn and Lawson.
Doug Stade and Bob Webb ac-
counted for the Zurich sniping
total.
GEOFFREY STARS
Exeter midgets were held to
their lowest goal output of the
season when they scored twice
in the second session to edge
Zurich 2-0.
Although carrying a majority
of the territorial play the locals
were slowed down by terrific
net minding by Geoffrey in the
visitors cage.
Defence stalwart Larry Wil-
lert originated both scoring
plays in the middle frame. Scott
' Burton was in the right spot at
the right time to convert a
Willert pass for the first mark-
er. The second counter came
from the stick of Bob Storie
with John Talbot also assisting.
Squirts undefeated
Exeter S qui r t s, competing
each Saturday afternoon in
Shamrock minor play, have ex-
tended their unbeaten streak to
three games.
This past week the 1 o c al
youngsters downed Kensal Park

rolled a 440 game at Exeter lanes Sunday, highest in the 14-year
history of the alleys. He came within one ball — his last one —of
a perfect game during an inter-town junior match with RCAF
Centralia. After 11 strikes, he punched the head pin on his last try,
He finished the previous game with three strikes to give him 14

DOUBLE GOAL SCORERS
Two goal performances from
five members of the H-Z club
featured Friday's game.
The visiting Atoms started
the game as if they meant busi-
ness, scoring in the first four-
teen seconds of play.
Dennis Morrissey, one of the
double scorers, tied the game up
at 5.44 on an unassisted dash.
Bruce Cooper cashed in goal
number two for the Combines
on a similar solo flight four
minutes later to put his club in
front to stay.
In addition to Cooper and
Morrissey other dual scorers
for the home team were Rick
Boyle, Earl Wagner and Steve
Kyle.
Morrissey and Wagner were
the top point-getters for the
night, each collecting a pair
of assists in addition to their
sniping abilities.
Completing the Combine
scoring with single goals were
Bob Livermore and Bill Shad-
dick.

Grand Bend club makes winter sports easy during opening day Sunday
Exeter's four minor hockey
teams batted 1.000 last week
with eight wins in eight tries,
Midgets, bantams and pee
wees swept tripleheaders
against Zurich and Lucan clubs
in WOAA and Shamrock action.
The juveniles racked Up a 0-5
win over Seaforth and squirts
maintained their undefeated re-
cord in London Saturday.
Take three from Zurich
Exeter's three minor clubs
swept a WOAA tripleheader
from Zurich teams in Tuesday
night's action at the local ice
house,
The Pee Wees went on a scor-
ing spree winning quite easily
12-1 in opening action. The next
two tilts were closely contested
as the Exeter bantams were vic-
torious 4-2 and the midgets won
by the shut-out route 2-0,
PAIR NET THREE
A pair of hat tricks led the
Exeter scoring parade in the
first match of the night. Marvin
Bower and Larry Haugh each
pulled the trigger three times
on shots that found the opposi-
tion net.
Bower scored his club's first
two markers of the contest and
completed his trio with the last
of the night with only five sec-
onds remaining.
Haugh's marksmanship was
spread throughout each period,
Some of the ruggedness was eliminated from winter sports by
the Grand Bend club which opened its facilities in the Pinery
Sunday. Philip Walker, operations manager, provided this trac-
tor-sleigh shuttle service to take visitors to and from the hills.
For others, there were small snowmobiles to take ski and to-
boggan enthusiasts up — and sometimes down — the hills. The club
Barry Smithers was again in
the nets to chalk up a goose, egg
and also hit the score sheet,
Which is rather Unusual for a
goal tender,
On Exeter's third goal coming
midway in the third, Smithers
stelVesi a shot in his goal crease
and cleared a long pass up near
centre that Steve Riddell nabbed
and moved the rest of the way
to score.
Riddell scored again mo-
ments later to up his team's
goal total to four.
After a scoreless first
period, Brad Klumpp found the
range early in the second to
start the game tallying. Larry
Davies assisted on the first
score and came back near the
end of the middle frame to
register on a singlehanded ef-
fort.
The schedule of the Exeter
squirts is as follows; with all
games being played in London,

Stire leads juveniles
Exeter's newly organized ju-
venile hockey club turned in a
solid performance in Seaforth
Thursday, downing the home-
towners 6-5 in WOAA action.
The teams battled on even
terms through a scoreless first
period.
The Seaforth boys were first
to hit the score sheet with their
star Ron Rochon hitting the
mark after three minutes had
elapsed in the second for his
first of a quartette of scores.
As the clock approached the
nine minute mark the Exeter
juves caught fire and scored
three times in 55 seconds to take
a lead they never relinquished.
Centre Larry Stire was the
main spark plug in the quick
attack, scoring two of the goals
unassisted and providing the
passing help to winger Jim
Smith for the other.
Defenceman Ron Broderick
upped the lead to 4-1 early in
the third as he drove alowhard
shot from the blue line that
caught the bottom left hand
corner.
Seaforth retaliated in short
order as Rochon netted his
second and Mike Phillips potted
a close in rebound to cut the
Exeter margin to one.
Big test this Friday
for H-Z Combines
One of the most important ingredients of
a successful hockey operation is lacking, at least
at the moment, for Exeter Mohawks of the OHA
intermediate "Big Nine" grouping,
The fans have been staying away in droves
and are missing a good brand of hockey.
Granted the young completely homebrew
club has taken a couple of sound beatings against
more experienced teams, but they have been
showing lots of hustle and will hold their own
against all but a couple of entries.
At Friday's home contest against RCAF
Clinton about 60 paying customers were on hand
and someone had to dig into their own pocket to
cough up fifteen cents to pay the referee's fees.
The cost of officiating seems to be all out
of proportion for this entirely amateur operation,
For the last encounter the boys in the striped
shirts came from London and St. Thomas.
Although this was the best refereeing of
the local home season, the cost of bringing an
official all the way from St. Thomas really bites
into the coffers.
On home ice the Tribe has been perform-
ing exceptionally well, winning two and tieing
one in four home contests to date. The only loss
'at the local ice palace was by a last second goal
in the 5-4 game against St. Clements.
There are plenty of ice fans in the area,
so let's give the Mohawks the encouragement
they deserve with a good attendance at the next
home game, two nights after Christmas, with the
Forest Lakesides as the opposition.
JUST MISSES PERFECT GAME
Up at the Exeter Bowling Lanes, terrific
five-pin scores have been turned in this year and
especially .the past week,
Congratulations are certainly in order to
young Bill Wright, in coming within a whisker
of tossing a perfect game Sunday afternoon.
Bill came up with eleven consecutive
strikes and needed only one more to record the
dream of all bowlers. His last throw was right
down the middle, only a little too full and
punched the head pin, leaving Bill with a terrific
score of 440,
This is the highest single game total ever
scored at the docal lanes and surpassed the prev-
ious high of 428 held jointly by Merle Mode, Wes
Ryckman and "Boom" Gravett.
Another member of the Wright family,
BM'S older brother Don fired 'an even 400 a year
ago.
Later in the same day, other competitors
came up with well rolled efforts. Jack Coughlin,
competing in the mixed loop and also a valued
member of last year's men's title holding Pepsis,
passed the 400 mark by three. Al Flynn and Bob
'Caldwell of the same league hit the scoreboard
with totals of 361 and 350 respectively.
IT RUNS IN FAMILIES
Several well known names in the hockey
world are among the top scorers in the Junior
A OHA at the moment.
Appearing in third spot in the latest scor-
ing ratings is Jim Peters of the Hamilton Red
Wings and a son of Detroit Red Wing star Jim
Peters of the 1940's and early 50's.
In fourth position is Dennis Hull, brother
of Chicago's super star Bobby Hull.
Also showing in the first ten is Peter Ma-
hovlich, brother of the Maple Leafs' Frank. The
younger Mahovlich stands six foot two and is
rated by Hamilton coach Eddie Bush as a good
skater and a tough competitor.

A sizzling slap shot from the
