nearest :municipality with a de-
partment is notified and its de-
parthlent covers the inUnicipal-
ity which has sent help to a large
fire,.
To co-ordinate the fire de-
partments within a.ceuntyunder
the mutual fire aid system, a
county fire-co-ordinator,
usually e full-time paid chief
of a full-time paid department,
is appointed. With few excep-
tions there is such a fire of-
ficer in each county and dis-
trict in Ontario.
GODEBI011
Advantages Of a County-Wide
mutual Tire aid system, based
upon short-wave radio, are to
be set before Huron C o u nt
council Tuesday afternoon next
by S. E, OXenham, assistant
chief of the lire services di-
vision, Ontario Fire Marshal's
Office,
Huron is one of only a few
counties without a county co-
OrdinatOr. Perth has had one for
some years, providing co-
operation of fire departments
at all times.
Under the mutual aid system,
financial assistance is provided
by the province for purchase of
Short-wave radio e q u ipm en t,
and the federal government will
assist in acquisition of equip-
ment if necessary to bring
available resources up to stand-
ard, when a system is set up.
The system of applications
for grants comes under the
emergency measures program,
Maintenance costs are the re-
sponsibility of the municipali-
ties.
Eleven partial county fire-
radio networks and two com-
plete county-wide networks had
been set up in the province,
at last report. The emergency
frequency can be used to call
help from another county in
case of a dangerous fire.
W. Stuart Forbes, EMO co-
ordinator for Huron, who made
himself useful in various ways
during the night of the water-
front fire here, is of the opin-
ion a mutual fire aid system
would have been helpful on that
occasion.
Agreements between munici-
palities to provide assistance
in event of a major fire are not
always dependable, according
to the fire marshal's office.
One of the considerations sup-
porting, the advantages of a
county system is that no fire
department is completely self-
sufficient for every emergency,
but under the system can be
assured of extra help at once.
The mutual aid system, as
organized by the fire marshal's
office, is an arrangement be-
tween municipalities that main-
tain fire departments, agreeing
under a pre-arranged plan to
go to each others' assistance
in event of a fire occurring at
which the "home" department
is in attendance but unable to
cope with it alone, There is no
charge for aid rendered under
this arrangement, the assis-
tance being on a reciprocal
basis.
In cases where an assisting
fire department has only one
piece of apparatus, the next
rnplirnent her good taste..,.
