Exeter's newest hockey en-

their first start in the ONA's
Big Nine grouping,
Although on the losing .end of
a 7-5 count to RCAF Clinton
Thunderbirds at the air station
Sunday, the Hawks turned in a
good performance and were al-
.• •ways in contention.
Due to the scarcity of work-
outs, the Tribe needed a bit of
time to get going and were down
3-0 after the first 20 minutes of
play,
Frank Boyle was the big gun
for the local pucksters, gaining
a hat trick as he fired the first
goal for his mates early in the
second and completed his
marksmanship with a pair in
the last six minutes of the game.
Boyle, a former Hawk junior,
An Exeter hockey team in intermediate
ranks has become a reality, thanks to the guid-
ance of Derry Boyle and the enthusiasm of all the
players who have turned out to practice.
The Mohawks, strictly a homebrew club,
will perform in league action before the home
fans for the first time Friday night.
One ingredient necessary in moulding a
good hockey club is support from the paying pub-
lic. A good crowd Was on hand last Friday at the
local ice house as the FIensall-Zurich Combines
opened their home schedule. A similar turn-out
for the home intermediate opener would certain-
ly give the Mohawks a big boost towards a good
year.
The local club will probably be somewhat
short of the other clubs in experience, but will
make up for some of this in desire and should
dish up an exciting brand of hockey,
The Tribe showed Sunday afternoon that
'they will be heard from before the schedule is
completed. They were edged by the RCAF Thun-
derbirds in Clinton 7-5,
Dick Bedard, a former Mohawk and last
year a top blue line defender with the Lucan-Il-
derton Combines, has been appointed playing
coach in an organization that will be composed
completely of players themselves.
Boyle in attempting to get intermediate
hockey back on, its feet in town has been acting
in a managerial capacity but will stay in the back-
ground once the club is moving.
WE BUY CANADIAN
The continuous argument concerning the
desirability of watching Canadian or American
football will probably never be settled.
Anyone who saw the thrilling finish of
last Monday night's Western Canada final as the
Saskatchewan Roughriders came roaring from be-
hind to stave off elimination will agree it was
football at its most exciting moment.
We enjoy watching both types of the fall
sport and like several points of each game.
We will agree that the brand of ball
played by the two pro leagues south of the border
is much superior to our style.
The Canadian rules have been modified
somewhat in the past several years, especially in
the blocking department. One feature of our
game, which we hope will never be changed is
the single point and the emphasis that is placed
on kicking.
In last week's western semi-final, in the
last minute, the foot was used three times. Cal-
gary attempted to tie the score and Regina, in
hanging on, returned the kick and as it turned
out were able to hang on as the third punt of the
one play went out of bounds.
In American football, the only long runs
on kick returns come on kick-offs, as in most
ordinary punts the "fair catch" is employed.

FORMER PEE WEES LEAD
Sever al members of last
year's champion pee wee club
led the bantams to the 2-0 win
in Lucan Monday.
Rick Brintnell, appearing in
the nets for the first time this
season, was in good form and
racked up the shutout.

score with team-mates Barry

assisting. Another graduate of
the pee wee ranks, Graham
Her), teamed up with holdover
Pete Lawson to pot goal number
two.
THIRD PERIOD RALLY
The midget contest started
out similarly to the first game.
Neither club scored in the first
twenty minutes.
Tom Hardy shot the Lucan
boys into the lead with an early
second period marker. A bullet
drive from the stick of Ron
Broderick from near the blue
line on a power play evened the
score midway through the se-
cond.
The locals left the ice for
the second rest with a one goal

HOUSE LEAGUES
Saturday morning House
League hockey got its initial
baptism last weekend as four
pee wee teams skated onto the
ice to participate in two games.
In the opener, Canadiens, last
years' defending champions,
edged the Black Hawks 2-1 in a
real nip and tuck battle.
Coach James D. Brough saw
winger Randy Parsons trigger
both Canadien goals.
Marvin Bower dented the
twine for Dean McKnight's
Black Hawks.
Leafs powered their way to a
7-3 victory over the Red Wings
in the second game.
Donny Schenk, Jimmy Guen-
ther and Larry Haughpaced the
winners with two goals each.
John Braid got the other for
Coach Lorne Haugh.
Dentin Gaiser, who played a
strong games for the Wings,
scored once with the other two
being shared by Ron Grasdahl
and John Becker. Mark Hinton,
of the Exeter Kinsmen Midget
all-stars, coaches the club,
ADULT ART GROUP
This Friday evening will
mark the second appearance of
professional artist, Mrs. Daisy
Bailey of Arva, to Exeter.
Mrs. Bailey, who teaches
some 15 adVanced artists each
time she comes to Exeter, visits
our town once a month. Classes
are scheduled from 8 to 10p.m.
Another energetic group un-
der the direction of Gordon
Koch, Exeter, meets in the Exe-
ter Library basement every
Monday evening from 8 to 10
p.m.
This group, known as the be-
ginners' group, also has some
15 members.
We are very pleased to see
that such an interest is being
taken in the field of art in this
community since it has many
personal rewards and develops
enthusiasm in the individual.
