The clubs traded goals late in the second to allow the home team to maintain a one goal margin at the rest period. Caron was the Clinton sharpshooter, with his second of the afternoon, playing coact. FRIDAY'S CONTEST HERE Support The Boy Scout Christmas Tree Campaign This Advertisement is sponsored by RAY MILLS ALVIN PYM PETER RAYMOND Exeter's newest hockey en- try, the intermediate Mohawka made a creditable snewing in their first start in the ONA's Big Nine grouping, Although on the losing .end of a 7-5 count to RCAF Clinton Thunderbirds at the air station Sunday, the Hawks turned in a good performance and were al- .• •ways in contention. Due to the scarcity of work- outs, the Tribe needed a bit of time to get going and were down 3-0 after the first 20 minutes of play, Frank Boyle was the big gun for the local pucksters, gaining a hat trick as he fired the first goal for his mates early in the second and completed his marksmanship with a pair in the last six minutes of the game. Boyle, a former Hawk junior, An Exeter hockey team in intermediate ranks has become a reality, thanks to the guid- ance of Derry Boyle and the enthusiasm of all the players who have turned out to practice. The Mohawks, strictly a homebrew club, will perform in league action before the home fans for the first time Friday night. One ingredient necessary in moulding a good hockey club is support from the paying pub- lic. A good crowd Was on hand last Friday at the local ice house as the FIensall-Zurich Combines opened their home schedule. A similar turn-out for the home intermediate opener would certain- ly give the Mohawks a big boost towards a good year. The local club will probably be somewhat short of the other clubs in experience, but will make up for some of this in desire and should dish up an exciting brand of hockey, The Tribe showed Sunday afternoon that 'they will be heard from before the schedule is completed. They were edged by the RCAF Thun- derbirds in Clinton 7-5, Dick Bedard, a former Mohawk and last year a top blue line defender with the Lucan-Il- derton Combines, has been appointed playing coach in an organization that will be composed completely of players themselves. Boyle in attempting to get intermediate hockey back on, its feet in town has been acting in a managerial capacity but will stay in the back- ground once the club is moving. WE BUY CANADIAN The continuous argument concerning the desirability of watching Canadian or American football will probably never be settled. Anyone who saw the thrilling finish of last Monday night's Western Canada final as the Saskatchewan Roughriders came roaring from be- hind to stave off elimination will agree it was football at its most exciting moment. We enjoy watching both types of the fall sport and like several points of each game. We will agree that the brand of ball played by the two pro leagues south of the border is much superior to our style. The Canadian rules have been modified somewhat in the past several years, especially in the blocking department. One feature of our game, which we hope will never be changed is the single point and the emphasis that is placed on kicking. In last week's western semi-final, in the last minute, the foot was used three times. Cal- gary attempted to tie the score and Regina, in hanging on, returned the kick and as it turned out were able to hang on as the third punt of the one play went out of bounds. In American football, the only long runs on kick returns come on kick-offs, as in most ordinary punts the "fair catch" is employed. Split weekend for H-Z, win here, lose to Glencoe Used Car Values up goal number two with a neat pass to Bob Livermore who found the mark at 5,59. Only nine seconds later Hary Thomas let a long shot go from outside the blue line that boun- ced crazily into the corner of the net for the second Strathroy tally. Bob Livermore was the top scorer for the Combines, tally- ing once in the middle frame and coming back with a pair in the third to complete ahattrick performance. The initial scoring play of the game came at the 8.40 mark of the. first when Bob Hoffman converted passes from Craig Chapman and Earl Wagner. The Combines added three counters in the second to take a 4-0 lead. A trio of Exeter natives played a big part in the middle period scoring. Rick Boyle was on the firing end of the first with Dale Turvey providing assistance along with Steve Kyle. Playing their home opener at the Exeter Arena Friday, the Combines downed Strathroy 7-2 for the second straight triumph over the Rockets. One of the Shamrock loop's newest entries, the Port Huron juniors will invade Hensall Fri- day night to supply the Com- bines' next opposition. LATE SPLURGE A seven goal splurge in the final 20 minutes powered the Glencoe boys to the 15-8 romp over the 11-Z Combines Satur- day. Bob Pinter, a four-goal per- former and Fred Quick, a star with Watford a year ago, tallied in the first and Bill Shaddick, with his first of three replied for the Combines.
