DEBATE The meeting of Dashwood WI was in charge of the Tweeds- muir History group with Mrs. John Rader, convener. The roll call was to bring a written history of surname or farm. These were discussed and some read. Mrs. Art Allernand discussed the motto, "Let us build for the future as well as our grand- fathers built for us". Vicky Mil- ler and Rick Hayter favoured With tap dancing. A reading was given by Mrs. John Rader. An interesting debate, "Re- solved that our grandfather's life was as enjoyable as the present generation" was given with Mrs. Leonard Schenk and Mrs. Mervyn Webb supporting the affirmative and Mrs. Carl Oestreicher and Mrs. Hugh Boyle upholding the negative. The decision was in favour of the affirmative. Mrs. Sid Baker, president, dealt with the business. She reported on the fall rally held at Goderich. Mrs. Arnold Kuntz, delegate with Mrs. M i l f o r d Merner to the London area convention, reported. Donations were made to the Children's Aid, War Memorial hospital, London, and the Men's club for the local children's Christmas party. The WOM en' s Society of World Service of the Evangeli- cal UB.church celebrated their 50th anniversary when they en- tertained the WSWS of Zurich and Crediton HUB churches and the Dashwood LiitheranSociety. Following a brief worship service in which the choir ren- dered a number Rev. M. J. James introdoced the speaker of the evening, Miss Jean Keller- man, a missionary of the HUB church in Japan, who is pre- sently at her home in Kitchener and whose father was a.native of Dashwood. Miss Kellerman gave an en- lightening message in which she' related that Japan is in a turmoil economically, politically, and spiritually. She said "It has become an industrial nation since the last war andnow steel and aluminum industries have taken over the quiet fishing vil- lages that dot the entire coast- line. Japan is now the most prosperous nation in the far East, This prosperity has caused a great deal of unrest and uneasiness among the people as the Christian church has not kept pace with the indus- trial age." She stated that 99% of the university students are mate- rialists. In pointing out some of the difficulties facing the Chris- tian church in Japan she said that the Buddhists are now copy- ing our methods of Christianity as they teach their children "Buddha loves me" replacing "Buddha" for Jesus". They pray to anything which brings them blessings. A historical sketch of the Society's fifty years was pre- pared and read by Mrs. Sid Baker. In the memorial service that followed, Mrs. George Link, a past president, read apoem and Mrs. H. J. Kellerman, secre- tary, read the names of the 72 members who had passed away during the past 50 years. As each name was read the presi- dent and Sour of the past presi- dents lit a candle in memory of each of these members. The candles were arranged in steps to form the letters WSWS with a background of gold mums. This service was closed with a trio by Mrs. Jack Gaiser, Mrs. Mrs. Gilbert Johns attended a shower for MissSharonStew- art at the home .of. Mrs, gobt Bell of Chiselhurst on Satur- day afternoon.
