vided by-an outside stairway.
The Shipka church was first
located north of the present
mill, then a hotel, On Oct. 8,
1888, the trustees agreedtobuy
lumber for the church and to
start construction the following
Monday.
From an early Sunday School
record, it was learned that in
1899 the school had two superin-
tendents—Robert Keys and Sam
Hawkins—and that by 1903,
there were 110 pupils.

closing of the small but trim
house of worship which has
served the Stephen township
community since 1888, An air
of sadness pervaded the final
ceremonies of worship, reflect,

At a congregational meeting

of the church voted to disband,
A week ago, Huron Presbytery
gave its consent to the closing.
Sunda's services are the last

Tuesday, officials of the
church will meet to decide upon
the disposal of the building and
its contents.
This Sunday, Shipka parish-
ioners will wend their way to
other churches in the area.
Some will go to Crediton, others
to Greenway.
The women of the congrega-
tion, however, may retain a
link with the church. Shipka
UCW group hopes to continue
to operate for an indefinite
period.
The closing of the church
marks the end of one of the last
three-point charges in the dis-
trict. Shipka has been linked
with Exeter Main St. and Credi-
ton for a number of years. Last

A former pastor of Shipka
church, Rev, Harold Currie of
Hensall, extended condolences
from presbytery to the congre,
gation and expressed the wish
that the parishioners would be
happy in the new churches they
will join.

In his evening sermon, "What
are you living far?", Mr, Currie
emphasized the importance of
every occupation, no matter how
menial, All fulfilled the purpose
of the creator, he said,
"Sometimes It takes a great-
er act of faith to close a church
than to open one," Rev. Currie
said in the morning during his
discussion on "The God of Ac-
tion".
"Life moves on and we must
move op with it. We have to leave
behind those things which are
most dear to us, It rends our
hearts."
"Sometimes we look toohard
at the past. We shouldn't freeze
on our faith of earlier years,"
Basing his sermon on the
story of the children of Israel
and their move into the pro-
mised land, Rev. Currie pointed
out that God does not forsake
his people. "He has always
anticipated man's needs."
