Ontario Highways Minister Charles MacNaughton, Exeter, denounced the Liberal campaign as one of " vilification, smear and innuendo" following his unanimous nomination as Hur- on's PC candidate in the Sep- tember 25 provincial election Wednesday night, August 28. The opposition, he said, has taken a negative position which "constitutes little more than a search for the things that appeal to the baser nature of people". "As a result, the Liberal party provides no progr am which might serve as an alter- native to the present govern- ment in Ontario." Mr. MacNaughton, unopposed for the nomination, contrasted the two "distinctly different" types of leaders and philoso- phies in the present campaign. He described PrimeMinister John Robarts as "solid, stable, sensible and sound," compared to the "incredible" John Win- termeyer. On the pensions issue, the highways minister quoted the Liberal leader as saying: "Vote for me or you will lose all. You'll lose this wonderful thing." He suggested this was Wintermeyer speaking but Health Minister Judy La Marsh talking. The prime minister, on the other hand, had said: "I want the best for our people. We should make a comparison of what is offered and select the best features for our plan." Durnin back as PC head Few changes were made in the officers of the Huron Pro- gressive Conservative Asso- ciation during the election which took place at last week's nomi- nation meeting in Clinton. Education Minister William Davis said last week at the Huron PC nomination Meeting that television broad- casting to elementary and sec- ()Mary schools will begin ear l y next year, The announcement was made in reply to critics who have said that the education department has not been taking advantage of the opportunity provided by television for education pur- Poses. The youthful minister de- scribed the new technical and vocation training, now being started at the composite school at Clinton, as "one of the most significant developments in education in years" and he cri- ticized the Liberals for their objections to the program. "I think you will find that the reorganized program being de- veloped will ensure that every- one in Ontario can take a course that will make him a useful and happy citizen in his community. We believe it is Important to see that our youth have this oppor- tunity," Official support for the re-election of Charlie MacNaughton as Huron's representative to the provincial legislature was evident Wednesday night, August 28, at the nomination meeting in Clinton, Mayor Eldrid Simmons, Exeter, nominated the highways minister. Above, three area reeves give their support to the candidate and his wife following the nomination. From left they are John Cor- bett, reeve of Hay township; Mr. MacNaughton, Mrs. MacNaugh- ton, Glenn Webb, reeve of Stephen township; and George Frayne, reeve of Usborne. Several hundred people attended the meeting at which Education Minister William Davis was the guest speaker. The minister outlined the benefits, which would be derived from the new youth branch being established by his department "to look after our young people who left school too soon", There were half a million such youth, he said, and the branch'sobjec- tive will be "to interest those young people in some type of education so that they, too, can make a contribution to the com- munity." He also answered criticfsm that the government was not providing enough assistance to universities, nor sufficient technical institutes for the pro- vince's young people. Univer- sity grants increased this year from $45 millions to $70 mil- lions, the entire amount re- commended by an investigating committee. By 1967, he said, there will be sufficient pupil places in technical institutes, for day and night training, to accommodate 46,125 students, "It's quite evident," he said, "that our government is plan- ning for the future". Other speakers at the PC „MM;allItignitgagElla MacNaughton raps ‘sme of Wintermeyer campaign government has spent $84,160 for every mile of king's high- ways in Huron riding and $4,350 in subsidies for m u n i c i p al roads. He calculated that in 10 years the vested ownership per family in both provincial and municipal roads in Huron was well in excess of $2,000. In regard to his representa- tion of the riding for the past five years, Mr. MacNaughton said they haye been filled with reward and enjoyment — along with frustrations, of course — but he had been heartened bythe support and backing of so many people in Huron riding. He reviewed briefly the ac- ......... "The electors," said Mr. MacNaughton, "have a choice between a party which has elect- ed a government with newfaces and a new leader,JohnRobarts, who has captured the imagina- tion of people from one end of the province to the other, who has aspired to get things done, whose main object is to benefit the people of Ontario with a positive program — a choice between that and a party whose approach is entirely negative and destructive." Turning to roads in Huron county, the highways minister said that since 1953 the Ontario "RANSISTOR IRO RADIO By MRS.
