The first attempt at organizing an OB,
111BIltary school track and field meet for a coin-
plete inspectorate was huge success here Sat-
urday.
More than 300 students from 21 schools
participated in the Saturday morning session un-
der the capable direction of Inspector John Go-
Man. With Mr. -Gornan leaving this area in the
near .future it is to be hoped his successor will
make this an annual event.
At the moment very few rural inspector-
ates throughout the province have undertaken
such an. endeavor. The Department of Education
is taking a closer look at physical fitness and its
benefits in elementary schooling and similar com-
petitions could become more frequent,
Although the larger centres took a large
percentage of the points. respectable showings
by some of the contingents from smaller schools
should increase the entries for coming years.
Some of the rural schools were not represented
since they felt the larger enrollment of urban
schools would curtail their chances.
One happy teacher was heard to remark:.
"All we expected to get from this was experience
and we came assay with a number of ribbons."
Having attended the local meet Saturday,
we would congratulate Mr. Gornan and staff
of teachers and additional helpers for conducting
a very pleasing and well planned program.
Getting underway shortly after nine, 30.
separate events with an average of 15 partici-
pants were run off in less than three hours. Five
or six areas of the grounds were utili7ed at the
same time to enable speedy diepositton of all
classes. All events were spaced properly giving
any youngsters competing in several events a
reasonable length of time to get set for their next
outing. Roberta Sharpe, Crediton, runner-up in the senior girls' high
jump event at the inspectorate field meet, clears the bar at the
four-foot mark. Children from 21 schools in the area competed

PIKE AND PICKEREL SCARCE
Pike and pickerel fishing in the local
streams has been at almost a standstill the past
few weeks with very few catches being reported.
Local merchant Ray Jory is about the only
angler coming up with any sizeable fish. Ray land-
ed a 27-inch pickerel weighing somewhat over
six pounds while trolling in the "cut" south of
Grand Bend a little more than -a week ago.
The interesting part of the catch was the
fact the "beauty was landed on an ordinary hook
with a gob of dew worms attached."
SPORTSMEN ARE SPENDERS
An economic survey taken by the Domin-
ion Bureau of Statistics shows that fishermen
and hunters in Canada spent $275,000,000 in 1961
on wildlife sport.
This survey, the first attempt to put a dol-
lar value on the outdoor sport in our country,
was done at the request of provincial game agen-
cies.
The tabulation showed that 1,526,000 per-
sons or 12% of our country's total population
either fished or hunted or did both in 1961.
An interesting part of the report showed
that 60% of all sportsmen hunted and fished
within a 100-mile radius of their homes. The
average fisherman spent approximately $143
while his hunting friend doled out about $110
in his yearly quest of game.

jitney winners
Exeter Lawn Bowling Club
moved into its second week of
action with a pair of jitneys.
Competing Saturday evening,
a combination of George Thom-
pson and WilfridShapton walked
off with top honors, notching
two wins plus 17.
In the runner-up position with
a single win plus 10 came the duo
of Lillian Pym and Howard
Truemner.
Attendance at Tuesday's jit-
ney was cut by the cooler
weather. Although the tempera-
ture was down, the competition
was warm with three rinks
scoring two wins each.
Betty Tilley and Ross Taylor
combined to cop the first award,
compiling a plus of 17. A plus
of 14 enabled LilaSmith and Wes
Watson to grab second spot. A
trio, comprising Russ Snell,
Shapton and Alvin Pra,
used a seven plus to corral the
number three position.
Honors were spread throughout the district in the Huron No. 3 and Perth No. 3 inspectorate public
school field meet at the local playgroundsSaturday. These girls were among the first place winners;

Car H-P ON THE ROCKS AGAIN?
Last week we reported the Huron-Perth
baseball league back in action after a precarious
few weeks. The situation is again shaky with the
withdrawal of the Listowel Legionnaire entry due
to lack of players.
President Bob Sadler of Staffa reports the
loop will go with three teams if a fourth is not
available. He is still hopeful of hooking up in an
interlocking schedule with another loop.
Although the weatherman hasn't been co-
operating too much, the three clubs should get
the season underway this week.
