GRAND BEND UNITED CHURCH CEMETERY Coming Events resolution to change the Mother and Dependent Children Aliewance Act was presented t.o. Exeter council menclay night by Rey!, John Q. Eerie, Pres- byterien church minister, with request that it he endorsed by council endpassed along te county 0ounQU. Acting op an original suggepa Hon by Mayor Eldred Simmons and with legal help of town whetter, Peter Raj -need, Mr. . Boyne and Rev. Bren DeVries, minister of Trivitt Memorial Anglican Church worked out the reaolution, it would revise the act to provide "a higher inceptive t work and to provide a higher standard of living" (for those eligible to receive benefits under the (act). The ministers and Mr, Raymond have been working at the pro, jeet for almost six months. Mothers now able to receive financial assistance under the act must have one or more dependents and must be widows, deSerted or with husbands phy, sically unable to work, or un- married. The resolution states: Whereas: the Mothers' Al- lowance Act RSD 1960 provides certain maximum allowance payable to mothers and children BEEF BARBECUE -- Monday, July 1, 1963 at Kirkton Fair Grounds. V, Pickard rwdo rskaildi limit be revised to provide a higher incentive to Work and toproVide was used to insure against rno- a higher standard of living. It thers neglecting their children is proposed that a certain max- imum monthly income from all sources including the allowance under the act be set. This maximum monthly in- come would be based on the number of dependents in the family, taking into considera- tion any special circumstances particular to the individual fa- mily. The mother should be allowed to work as many hours as she feels able and should be permitted to earn from all sources, any amount up to the maximum monthly income set by the act without losing all from it. The act would pay a basic maximum assistance to the mo- ther provided her income plus the maximum assistance did not exceed this maximum al- lowance and the present act would not be increased. As an example: The act at present sets a basic maximum allowance for a mother with two dependent children in the four to nine age bracket at $136. At present a mother can earn about $85 a month before this basic allowance is redu- ced. If she earns more than $85 her allowance is reduced by the excess. If the act provided a maxi- mum monthly income from all sources at $350 a mother could earn up to $214 a month before basic allowance of $136 is re- duced by her earnings. If she earns $200 a month she would still receive $136 a month from the allowance thus giving her a total income of $336. This would provide a higher standard of living for the family and an incentive to work to raise that standard. Mr. Boyne told council that because of the 24-hour week, $85 a month restriction such a mother is discouraged from working to raise her standard of living and that the mother who wishes to work enough hours to ensure such a standard for her family is penalized by Decoration Day Service SUNDAY, JUNE 16 2:30 P.M.
