A brother and a sister won
two of the four public school
competitions conducted Monday
night at Crediton community
centre.
Gwen Finkbeiner, Crediton,
placed first in grade seven
spelling and Brian Finkbeiner,
her brother, was the best spell,
er in the grade five competition.
They are children of Alvin Fink -
oeiner.
All four winners of the con-
tests, sponsored by Crediton
Women's Institute, came from
Crediton. Other schools par-
ticipating included Sharon,
Khiva and Mt. Carmel.
"United States--Our Neigh-
bor" was the topic of Kathy
Boulienne, winner in the grade
eight public speaking compe-
tition. As her extemporaneous

Runner-up was Elaine Whit-
ney, Sharon, who spoke on edu-

Second place in the grade
seven spelling contest was Jane
McCann, Mt. Carmel. Others
In this division were Bill Ratz,
Khiva, and Sharon Mar t e ne,
Sharon.
Linda Haugh, Crediton, won
the grade six verse speaking
class with her recitation of
"The Ant and the Cricket".
Mary Angela Glavin, Mt. Car-
mel, and her "Casey at the
Bat" placed second. Other par-
ticipants were Penny Ford,
Sharon, and Ronald Denomme,
Khiva.
Paul Glavin, Mt.Carmel, was
runner-up in the grade five
spelling contest,
Chairman for the event, which
attracted a capacity crowd to
the Crediton nail, was John
Morrissey, former warden of
Huron.
Judges were Inspector G. J.
Goman; Henderson King, prin-
cipal of J. A. D. McCurdy
School, Huron Park, and Prin-
cipal A. B. Idle, Exeter Public
School.
Mrs. Ross Haugh, Crediton,
was convenor of the WI com-
mittee which staged the event.
Cash prizes and pens were
presented to the winners by
teachers of the schools in-
volved.

spending a few days in Detroit
visiting her aunt, who is ill in
hospital there, and was accom-
panied by her cousin,Mrs.
James Paton of Clandeoye.

of Mr. Kenneth Barry and Miss
Hazel Sinclair on Saturday, Ap-
ril 20 at 7 pm in Runneymede
United Church, Toronto. A re-

HONOR NEWLY WEDS
A reception was held in Staf-
fa Township hall on Friday eve-
ning for Mr. and Mrs, George
Vivian with a good crowd in
attendance. Nelson Howe's or-
chestra provided the music for
dancing.
An address was read by Gor-
don Colquhoun and a presenta-
tion of money was made to the
couple by Larry Gardiner.

Mrs. S. Chuter
Varna resident
Mrs. Susan Catherine Chuter,
85, of Varna died Monday in
Clinton Public Hospital.
She was born in Goderich
Township and following her
marriage to Edwin George
Chuter she resided in Varna.
Mr. Chuter died nine years ago.
She is survivedbyfive daugh-
ters: Mrs. Norman (Irene) Wal-
per, Mrs. Walter (Margaret)
McBride and Mrs. Elmore (Ida)
McBride, all of Exeter; Mrs.
Fred (Mary) Carter, London;
Mrs. William (Bessie) Town-
send, Hayfield; four sons: Wil-
fred, Varna; Thomas, Clinton;
Elliott, London and Harvey,
Owen Sound; 25 grandchildren
and 19 great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held
at the Ball and Miitch ftmeral
home, Clinton, Thursday, May
2 at 2 pm. Burial will be in
Baird's cemetery, Stanley
Township.

resident, Miss Amanda Bice,
90, died in St. Thomas hos-
pital Tuesday, 13 hours after
she Was pulled unconscious
from her burning cottage, just
South Of Mapleton,
She had lived alone in the
cottage since her brother Ivor
died in March, 1962. They mov-
ed from their Clandeboye area
farm to the home of a nephew,
Clifford Bite, in London In
1955. Following the at t V.s
death they Malted to Yarmouth
township.
MISS Bite was the last Sur-
viving member of the family
of Mr, and Mrs. Ltireefi Bice,
