AUTO MECHANICS
Aubrey Tennant recently
spoke to a group of boys from
all grades about opportunities
in garage mechanics.
Garage mechanics is one of
Canada' s largest employers.
There is always a shortage of
good licensed men and those
who are employed in the field
have an unlimited scope for
advancement.
The mechanics may be em-
ployed in manufacturing as in-
spectors of the finished cars.
In business they may also
work as body repair men or in
the more advanced positions of
salesmen, etc. Men working in
this area may be paid on a flat
rate or on a percentage basis.
Teaching of mechanics in
trade schools also employs li-
censed mechanics.
The requirements for a me-
chanic's license are as follows:
four years high school plusfive
years apprenticeship or three
years at a trade school plus
two years apprenticeship. At
the end of his training the ap-
prentice must try a Department
of Labour examination.
A person interested in this
occupation must have a mecha-
nical aptitude, must be able to
learn quickly and must also be
able to adapt to his ever-chan-
ging field.
Mr. Tennant also pointed out
that the main disadvantage of
this occupation is that there is
no industry-wide pension plan.
