Ask a •Qapadian Whet he knows
of Pakistan and you will Pre-
bably get a confused reply come
Pounded from news articles and
grade school geography,.
Ask someone who was porn
In palcistan and, of course, you
will get an entirely different
answer. We did. Fe was Ashraf
Xhan, an officer of the Royal
Canadian Air Force, stationed
at Centralia and living in
Exeter.
Ashraf Khan is not only well
informed about the country of
his birth but has an extensive
knowledge of his adopted coun-
try as well, His family, most
of whom are in government
office, live in Lahore, West
Pakistan, which he smilingly
refers to as "The Paradise of
the East".
Mr. Khan first came to Ca-
nada in 1957 for post-graduate
work at Laval after obtaining
B.A. in economics and M.A. in
psychology. Mr. Khari studied ie
Pakistan as well as in England.
At Laval he earned another
master's degree and met the
girl who was to become his
bride, Michele Boutin, daughter
of M. Lucien Boutin, managing-
partner of an international firm
of chartered accountants in
Montreal. Mrs. Khan is also a
graduate of Laval as well as
University of Montreal, When
asked if she missed the life of
a large city, she said she was
much too busy with her children.
Ashraf Khan was not long in
Canada before he decided to
make a life for himself in the
country. Having a long military
tradition behind him, a career
in Canada's armed forces ap-
pealed to him and in 1961 he
joined the Royal Canadian Air
Force, He has been stationed
at Centralia for the past 16
months, likes the service life
and recommends it to other
young men as a career. He is
impressed by Canada's vitality
and feels that it is a good country
with much to offer. He finds it a
friendly country and the people
very kind, "I have never felt
like a stranger" he said.
Speaking of education in Pa-
kistan, he said that primary
schools have been established in
the small communities and very
much like Canadian system of
consolidated high schools. Se-
veral villages combine to es-
tablish high schools. There are
five large universities in Pakis-
tan all located in large cities
and numerous colleges through-
out the country affiliated to
these universities.
Referring to Pakistan's in-
ternational relations he drew
attention to the fact that Pakis-
tan has been a staunch ally of
the United States and the West
for more than a decade. She is
also a member of the Common-
wealth and is aligned-with the
West in Defence Pacts like
South East Asia Treaty Orga-
nization and the Central Treaty
Organization,
Pakistan has received more
than $2 billion in economic and
military aid from the United
States to combat Communism
by strangthenieg her economic
and military position. Pakistan
is very pro Western in it s
thinking and there is mutual
trust between the two countries.
Pakistan's_ economy is pre-
dominantly agricultural and the
new government, a mllitar y
junta that overthrew the corrupt
civilian regime a few years ago
has instituted land reforms and
redistributed land to the pea-
sants. It removed corruption in
government offices and insti-
tuted a new concept of demo-
cratic growth for the country.
It is governed by the president
and a cabinet of ministers very
much like our Canadian parlia-
ment.
President Ayub Khan, a gra-
duate of Sandhurst (Britain's
West Point), has written a trea-
tise on democracy for under-
developed countries Which deals
with the gradual introduction of
democracy into countries that
have long been under totali-
tarian rule.
The seat of government is now
Rawalpindi although many
government offices are still
in the old capital of Karachi.
Pakistan thinks well of the
Colombo Plan and remembers
Canada for the part she played
in the building of the big hydro-
electric dam at War sak. It Jane,
with other countries under. the
Plan, in the exchange of students
and technical experts and Some
are presently in Canada. Her
trade with this Country is'mostly
in raw jute, articles of clothing,
cotton and other textiles.
On the subject of religion
Mr. Khan said the Majority of
the people hi Paltietati areMos-
ferns and their beliefs resemble
Christianity in that they worship
One God. They believe in the
prophets. Their 30 daye of Rani
Madan are simper to the 40
days Of Lent when they fast
froth sunrise to sunset.
