SCOREBOARD Producing their best game of the series, Exeter Pee Wees defeated Wheatley 7-2 to bring home the "C" title from the fifth annual international puck tourney at Leamington last week, Exeter midgets racked up two more big wins this past week, blanking Zurich 5.0 and swamping Atwood 154. Playing on home ice Satur- day, the local midgets downed their guests from Zurich 5.0 in WOAA play. Although they were held to their lowest output of goals, the locals came up with their best performance of the year, .featur-• me crisp, accurate passing. Main reason for the lower score was the terrific display by Richard Stade between the pines for Zueich. The young netminder' time and time again came up with brilliant stops, especially on picking off high shots with his right glove, • Mike Cushman • and Allae Thompson led the 'winner's at- tack with a pair of goals each. ;Jack Glover added the fifth counter. in holding Zurich off the score-sheet, Larry Stires and Tommy Glavin shared the goal» stopping chores for Exeter. BLAST ATWOOD 154 With Bob Burns and Gary Parsons notching four goals each, Exeter midgets main- tained their unbeaten record by clobbering Atwood 15.1 Thursday at home in regular WOAA. action. Larry Stires started the lo- cals on their scoring spree at 2.38 of the first, finishing a play with Bob Storie and Pe- ter DeVries. Parsons counted the initial goal of his quartette on a pass from Ron Cornish to up the count to 2-0. Jock Lock completed the opening period sniping, giving Ihe final touch to a play with Burns and Ron Broderick. Boom's boys jumped into a commanding lead in the mid- Midgets flying high, lace. Zurich, Atwood After getting off to a slow start, the locals took the lead late in the second session, and never looked hack as they fired four unanswered goals in the final stanza, Frank DeVries was the scar- die frame, flashing the red light on six occasions, Gary Parsons nabbed his second and third of the game, with single tallies being added by John Lock, Storie, Stires and Burns. With Peter DeVries setting up the plays, Bob Burns tallied three times in the third, Larry Stires found the range for his third goal of the night at 8,00 of the final frame. Parsons and Storie added their final markers to bring the locals' total to 15, Bob Henderson notched the sole Atwood counter late in the game, depriving Callum McPhee of a shut-out, of district sports '452. By ROSS HAVGH CURLING Interest 1n curling is continuing on the up. swing with the present membership. of 300 at the :Exeter Curling Club. The local curlers started off the year by treating their guests rather poorly in their second Annual mixed bonspiel. as two home rinks won the top honors, Foursomes skipped by Dick jerinyn and Ken Ottewell earned the 'prizes in both events. Rinks headed by Marian Fletcher. CathY $outhcott and Lois Ottewell were crowned as ladies' champs in the three draws held during. the year. Lee Learn skipped his rink to the Exeter club's men's grand championship. After winning the first draw, the milkman went on to topple the other draw winners, Gord McTavish and the Bill Allison,Doug Hughson combination. In local open bonspiels and out-of-town play. local curling. enthusiasts fared very well. A ladies' foursome, skipped by Helen Mickle. took top prizes in an open 'spiel in Strathroy, Lee Webber holds the distinction of guiding three rinks to titles in open competition in the district Charlie Shane's group copped Division 14 laurels in British Consul playdowns and Bev Morgan led a rink to the One tario playoffs of the Massey-Ferguson Curlerama. BOWLING Up at Exeter Bowling Lanes. Aub Farquhar reports more than 700 bowlers actually participate in league competition. In men's loop play. a new power came to the fore, with Gunn's Kingpins notching the B title and going on to edge the "A" champs, Spares, for the grand championship. Individually, Jack Fuller copped the average crown with 233, Tim Stires threw a high 378 single and Jim Fairbairn earned the high triple award with 945. The Wee Hopes, "B" play-off winners, lick- ed the Lollipops, "A" champs, to cap the ladies' grand title. Sharon Appleton's 352 and Norma Caldwell's 334 were tops in single scores, while Audrey Pooley with 813 and Barb Miller with 750 were high in a three-set effort. The mixed league title was grabbed by the Kool Eats, after downing the Air Wicks in the final. In play-off competition, Norma Coleman rolled a 393 to earn the distinction of holding the all-time ladies' high single at the local lanes, An- other local record was set when Lorne Haugh came up with a 954 triple during the playdowns. Two youngsters also gained recognition in the past year, Eleven-year-old Donny Campbell fired - a 358 single, while teen-age Don Wright came up with a score of an even 400. In bundling up the bowling news, we would like to wish the grand old man of the alley, Amos Darling, a happy 81st birthday this week. VOLLEYBALL Up at SHDHS, the senior girls and boys squads romped off with volleyball titles in the newly formed Huron-Perth loop, ousting their five- team opposition. Advancing to WOSSA final play in London, the teams ended up in third spot in their respective divisions, Centralia airmen, playing under coach George Kelly, enjoyed a very successful season, copping the first annual Golden Ball tourney on their home court in March, Representing the.011- tario zone, they descended on Downsview air station May 9 and 10 and flew away with the all- Canadian RCAF title. GOLF Lloyd Greenacre hit the headlines i wice during the year. His initial claim to fame was post- ing the first par 34 on the newly founded Exeter . course, August 9. Not to be outdone by himself, he came back on October 19 to post a par-break- ing 33. The important factor in this low score was a hole-in-one potted on the 200-yard seventh hole. Jim Russell, trading a baseball bat for golf club, 'took home both the medal and match play trophies provided by the Exeter Golf Club. BASKETBALL After going through their schedule and Perthex playoffs undefeated, Miss Seigner's junior girls from SHDHS invaded Thames Hall in London to do battle in WOSSA competition in early March. Gaining the final round with a win over Amherst. burg in the morning, the local girls lost a heart. breaker to a taller Merlin squad 40.38, in a game that ended in confusion. A popular new hoop loop made its ap- pearance in 1962, namely the Exeter Rec league. Zurich Hustlers walked off with the title, after setting a record in regular play, notching 101. points in a single game. George Wright copped the individual scoring award with 207 points. ROD AND GUN in hunting circles. an enviable record was set when the Shipka sharpshooter, Gorden Rat's, bagged five deer on a two-day hike into the woods near Johnston Harbor. Concerning hunting, we should mention the fine efforts of Alvin Wiltert and Dick Roelofson fn teaching young boys the art of safely handling firearms, through the hunter's safety course. Reports of good fishing catches have boon very scarce, but several local fishermen tried to Set an early swimming record by taking a dip in Lake Slincoe in January. TRACK AND FIELD One of the brightest spots on the sporting scene at SHDHS was the record-breaking perform- ance of Craig Davidson hi capturing the junior boys" title at a Huron-Perth Conference track meet in St, Marvs. The speedy youngster sprinted eft with four :firsts and was the anchor man on the winning relay foci. In setting two new records, Davidson's best effort came hi the hop, step and jump event, with a leap of 37' 11,,". which betters ed the previous mark by almost aired feet. LAWN BOWLING Lawn bowling enthusiasts enjoyed a vefy busy and successful Season at the, local greens, President of the local club, Ross Taylor, reports an:increase hi membership and that substantial repairs have been made to the club house.
