The new act to provide for the rehabilitation and de• velopment of agricultural lands in rural areas of Ontario will bring our province in line with the provisions of the similar act of the government of Canada. The provincial ARDA pro- gram can now be developed. This is a very far-reaching act which should have a beneficial effect on the standard of living of many rural people. Ever since, and indeed even before the "dead meat scandal" of a few months ago there has been pressure of public opinion, particularly in urban centres, for such an act, A great deal of thought went into the drafting of this legislation. Many trips were made to Ottawa to discuss with the federal government officials the legislation which has now been given royal assent and will come into effect on proclama- tion, The act provides that the federal government will in- sped all meat going into the trade within two years on the same federal standards as now apply for interproviricial and export trade. Inspection will be provided for small slaughter- houses on an itinerant basis and will likely be carried out by trained lay inspectors working tinder the supervision of ta qualified veterinarian, The costs of such inspection will be paid by the province to the government of Canada for all plants coining under inspection after January 1, 1963, There is no intention to interfere with farmers who have enjoyed a happy relationship with consumers in supplying meat, including poultry, on a direct basis. The' general intent of the aft is to provide wholesome, safe meat, and meat pro- ducts, to the consuming public with as little disruption as pox- Bible to the existing good relationships enjoyed by all segments of our society and of our economy. LAUDS WoRK OF PREMIER The now adjourned sitting of the provincial partita inent enhanced the leadership of our prime minister, Hot. John P. Robatt,s, He has emerged as a very strong, courageous and extremely honorable leader. He has shown concern for the feellags of ordinary people such as ourselves who have in the past, and who will in the future, I am sure, contribute so greatly to the development of Ontario. Mr, Robarts is NI- filling the predictions made when he was elected to office— that he -would be one of the great premiers of Ontario. New Year's -Greetings Three thousand Canadian farmers, meeting on December 3rd to discuss the dairy situa- tion, agreed that the dairy problem requires a greatly expanded promotion program. They called for increased spending on advertising, a greater effort to introduce school milk programs across the nation, and research to de- termine the role of dairy pro- ducts in nutrition and health, The study groups called for united action by dairy farmers, organized through a single milk marketing board. Such a board could set standards, regulate the market and equalize re- ceipts to producers, One group said: "We would suggest that the various dairy organizations get back together and stay to- gether and get a Dairy Market- ing plan in operation quick, before we have complete dis- aster in the dairy industry." Most groups believe that Dairy Farmers of Canada should lake the lead in estab- lishing policy designed to bring order back to the dairy indus- try. The Federation of Agricul- ture was another Organization Which was charged with ;Ilia responsibility of providing leadership to producers. Well over 90 pertent of the groups agreed to support the expanded Dairy Farmers of Canada set-aside to pay for stepped up promotion and or- ganization, It was agreed that more money is needed for promotion and new product de- velopment. Some groups. wart concerned that all. producers be equally assessed for such expenses, In Ontario, the groups were asked for their reaction to the. idea .0f a Royal. Commission on the dairy. industry, Well over half of the forums and almost all of the dairy groups Rattled the idea -down, Said one group: "A ROyal Commission is just a waste of time, The McFar- lane Report and Government branches of Agriculture and `Perhaps Tint will etre you a leaving the key under' the matt' EARN CLEANER SILO UNLOADER & BUNK FEEDER YOU'LL. One comment sums up the majority view in the entire discussion: • "We would like to see the dairy groups get together and formulate a policy for a National Milk Marketing Plan. . : IN THE LEGISLATURE It might have to be started on a smaller scale than hoped for but a start needs to be made. Difficulties could be ironed out as they operated under a plan," Further information on this topic can be obtained from National Farm Radio Forum, 113 St, George Street, Toronto 5, Ontario, °Do you want something really like Or do you feel It's the thought that tounts1" if you are a member of Waterloo Cattle Breeding Association you are entitled to a voice 111 choosing the directors who will guide its1963 operations and to a full report of its 1962 year's business, MEMBERS' ANNUAL MEETINGS BRUCE GREY — January 2, 1963 — 11 A.M, Paisley Town 14a11 HURON — January 5 — Dept of Agriculture Board Room, Clinton WATERLOO,WBILINGTON,Pilltril January 0, 1053 -- 10:15 A.M.
