CLIFF .C.RONKITE, PROPRIETRESS December 8, 1962. will go down. in history for the village as a special red letter day, when the Businessmen's As- sociation staged their third Santa Claus parade. After the delightful, mild, balmy weather enjoyed by To- ronto, London and Exeter for their parades Lucanites felt the weatherman was handing them a raw deal when Thursday's storm of rain, snow and sleet increased on Friday, with pre- dictions of more snow for Sat- urday. However, to the sur- Prise and delight of all, it was an ideal day—clear sunny and cold in a setting of snow cov- ered ground. Long before the appointed hour of 2,30 p.m., cars loaded with adults and children were seeking parking spaces on side streets and soon Main St. from end to end was lined with old. and young eagerly awaiting Lucan.'s big parade which be- gan at. the arena, went down to the Fine Station and returned to the arena, giving everyone a second opportunity to view it. The parade began with cars containing the police, Hon. W. A. Stewart, Reeve Ivan Hearn, village council and Clint Hod- gins i well known sulky driver; aad Mrs. K. Dickson and Mrs. Wallace riding t he i r show horses. These were followed by bliss Dorothy Pierce's inajoits tars and the Sarnia Lionette. Band and the Lucan Lions neat. Riding on .the fenders of the latter Were Nancy Haakett and Linda Ankera. On the .sities were "We Serve Hockea, Ming, The Blind and the Needy"- More than 7,000 !iasues went in , to the decorating of this float with a rocket on top. After this float was Roy Park• hisOn on horse-bark and the Central Hotel float varrsing anentbers of the fatuous Irish Nine hall leant. Next carne the Canadian Legion and Auxiliary floe, the former sponaoring. pubLie speaking and hoekey and the latter, figure skating. rim the centre of the float was Gil- lian McNamee. this year's pub- he speaking w inner. This was followed by the Skating Liu]) float, clowns, and the "Heaverly Willi:tithes" float, a comic. take-off on the TV pro- gram. This advertised the grand opening of Culbert's Decorat- ing Centre. Then came Mrs. Canadianaire major- ettes from St. Thomas, the Lon- don Drum and Fife Band, Fred Darling's horses, the IGA truck announcing its grand opening Dee. 13. the Woodstock Whirl- ers majorettes, and the Boy Scouts' float—ii splendid float of evergreens with camp fire, tent and Scouts. Don Reving- ton's horaes were followed by the Wraith and Storey float— another colorful float with the slogan 'Lunn a Good Place to Live and Play". On the truck were children with posters rep- resenting school, church. Teen- Town, sports and fire dept. This was followed by the Teen Town float loaded with chil- dren, and the Public School floats. Next came Mr. Russell Bowman and his daughter, Mrs. Bob Evens, dressed in the "Gay Nineties'', riding in an ancient decorated buggy loaned by Mr. Clarence Hackett and pulled by Bill Banting's 3'i-year-old horse. Mr, Bowman was spon- soring his daughter's "Snipp and Style Beania- Shoppe. Then. came (ioorge Young's Dry Goods float. with Santa Claus and ins reindeer, which was followed by clowns and Van. This was followed by Harold Hardy's and George Thomson's horses. Clarence Carter's go- kart and the Koffee Kup and Davis Hardware float, depict- ing a Christmas scene with grandma and five children, Last but not least came the Scott Elevator float with old Santa Claus himself, sitting in a cutter in a Christmas setting extending a greeting to one and all. So ended Lucan's "biggest little Christmas parade in West- ern Ontario". Tired business men, who had worked so hard to really put Lucan on the map, felt much better as congratula- tions began to pour in from .all sides. Can they possibly pro- duce a bigger and better pa- rade in 1963, only time—and the weatherman—can tell, Personal items Ilene Donaldson scalded her foot while straining potatoes last week- Mr. and Mrs, Jack Winn, of Ray City, were weekend guests of Mr. anti Mrs. Allan Scott, Thank You,..
