The Exeter Lions Club. Met
Thursday .evening, September
13, at the Dufferin Dote/. Cent-
ralia. for the first meeting for
the fall and winter term. The
newly elected president, Fred
Darling. presided.
The feature of the evening
wee an address by Miss E.
McTavish, guidance leacher in
the SUDIIS, who spoke on the
Rebuts' guidance plan, the
new look in education.
Miss McTavish asked why
was the Roberts' plan neces•
sary? She staled that 43 per
rimi of the labor force of On-
tario have an education of
grade 8 or less, On top of that
approximately ee per cent of
high school students are drop-
ping out before graduation at
grade 12. Add to that the fact
that employers are demanding
employees with higher educa.
tion.
"We find that a large group
of people are out of work and
haven't sufficient education to
be trained for the jobs- that
are available, With the ;Ro-
berts' plan the government de
cided the most jobs in the
future five years would be
available in professions, fin-
ance and commercial work,
that is the big demand will be
in clerical work," said, Miss
McTavish.
There are three choices. A
grade 8 pupil has to decide
whether he wants to 'take a
five-year course in arts and
science, or a four-year techni-
cal course or a four-year com-
mercial course leading to of-
fice work, This decision has to
be made before the student is
out of grade 8, with a limited
chance in grade 9, This will
tend to place'' technical and'
commercial courses on a more
equal fooling with the aca-
demic courses.
The question is whether a
child can decide or does he
really know what, his plans are
while in grade 8, Points to con-
sider are the parents' wishes
and their financial situation;
also the child's marks and
aptitude tests,

"My answer is a qualified
yes," said Miss MeeTavish.
"For", the majority of people aptitude tests are surprisingly
accurate.' she said.
"If aptitude tests, school tests,
interests and desires of sty-
dent and parents are all taken
into. account and given equal
-weight, then a usually .fairly
sound decision is made," said
the speaker.
