Oakwood golfers
adopt new name
Exeter Golf Club adopted a
new name, honored a new
champion and elected new of-
ficers during a banquet last
week which ended the organi-
zation's activities for this year.
Because of the confliction of
its name with the recently es-
tablished Exeter Golf Course,
the group decided to call itself
the "Oakwood Golf Club" in
the future. It will continue to
operate in the same fashion as
previous years.
The group was organized in
1956 by a -number of Exeter
golfers and was joined by play-
ers from Parkhill, Thedford,
Grand Bend and Dashwood
areas, all of whom played at
the Oakwood course.
New club champion
The club honored a new
champion, Jim Russell, with
the presentation to him of both
match and medal championship
trophies. Jack Smith, Exeter,
awarded the medal trophy
which he donated to the club
and last, year's champion, Bill
Amos, Parkhill, presented the
match trophy, donated by Red
Scott.
This year's
club
melon joined
two other club members who
have won both awards in one
year - Bill Amos and Morley
Sanders, Exeter.
Prizes were presented to the
reserve champions, Lorne
Kleinstiver and Morley Sand-
ers, as well as to members
who have won tournaments
throughout the year.
Parkhill president
George Glendinning, Park-
hill, heads the executive of the
new Oakwood club. He suc-
ceeds Don Southcott as presi-
dent. :First vice-president is
Harry Hamilton, Grand Bend.
Other officers include: Bill
A in o s, Parkhill, secretary;
Morley Sanders, Exeter, han-
dicapper; games committee,
Jim Cutting, and. Emmerson
Desjardine, Grand Bend;
George Pedlar, Parkhill; Don
Gravett and Jim Russell, Exe-
ter.
Appreciation was expressed
to retiring secretary John Go-
man, a former president, who
has served as an officer of the
club for a number of years.
Net winners of the final tourn-
ament were. Ross Griffith, whn
shot a '9 for a net of 63, Don
Gravett, Claude Farrow and
Lorne Nleinstiver, all of whom
tied with nets of 66.

Walslogham Senators surged
from behind with four runs in
the late innings to nail ,Zurich
Limber Kings with a 9-6. loss
in Zurich Saturday afternoon.
The contest was the first
meeting of the two clubs in the.
Ontario intermediate 01)." fin-
als. This year's .S.OriQs will be
a three-out-of-five affair with
Walsingham getting the odd
game.
Zurich's Don O'Brien and
Walsingham's Ory H a ns o n
hooked up in a pitcher's duel
through the first six innings
with the two posting almost
identical strikeout and walk
records and the Lumber Kings
leading the visitors 0-5.
However, the Senator lineup
finally got t o playing-coach
O'Brien and they raked him
for five hits and six runs in
the seventh and eighth in-
nings. Dan Trushinski finished
up for the home squad.
Through the seven full in-
nings that he pitched O'Brien
permitted eight hits and seven
runs, fanning eight and walk-
ing two, while Hanson allowed
seven hits and six runs, regis-
tering seven strikeouts and a-
iling two free passes.
Two hit freely
Both clubs notched their fair
share of hits with some shod-
dy defensive play on the part
of each team also accounting
for some extra scoring. The
visiting Walsingham crew, un-
accustomed to their' surround-
ings, booted the ball seven
times during the game while
the Kings came up with four
errors.
Only three Zurich batsmen
were able to get to Hanson for
a base knock and they ac-'
counted for seven Zurich hits,
Catcher Earl "Cuss" Wagner
and shortstop Don Genttner
cracked out three hits apiece,
with all of Wagner's going for
two bases while all Genttner's
hits were of the single variety.
Don O'Brien provided the
home team with their lone
other safety, a booming triple
in the fifth frame,
.O'Brien opened the fifth with
his three-base shot and scored
on a single by Genttner who
eventually scored on another
error and a ground-out,
Wagner once again figured in
the Zurich searing in the sixth
when, he doubled home Dick
Bedard who had walked and
then proceeded to steal second
and third to give the home
squad a 6.5 edge.
however, Walsingham erupt-
ed with four runs in the next
two innings to eliminate the
Kings who could mount no
serious threat during the final
three innings..
